Book Synopsis Ecology and Evolution of the Freshwater Mussels Unionoida by : G. Bauer
Download or read book Ecology and Evolution of the Freshwater Mussels Unionoida written by G. Bauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All those who think that bivalves are boring are in the best company. Karl von Frisch is reported to have turned the pages more quickly in texts where bivalves were treated because, according to him, they literally lack any behaviour. The fact that they can filtrate huge amounts of water, burrow into the sedi ment, actively swim, drill holes into rocks and boats or detect shadows with the aid of pretty blue eyes located on the rim of their mantle obviously left v. Frisch unimpressed. Why, then, a book on the large freshwater mussels (Naiads or Unionoida), which on first sight are much less spectacular than the marine ones? The main reason is that they are keepers of secrets which they reveal only on close and careful inspection. This is not only true for the pearls some species produce and which over centuries have contributed to the treasures of bishops and kings, but particularly for their ecology: their life cycles are linked with those of fishes, some can occur in incredible densities and some can live for more than 100 years. Thus, the presence or absence of naiads in a lake or stream has manifold implications.
Book Synopsis In the Search of the Lost Pearl by : Igor Popov
Download or read book In the Search of the Lost Pearl written by Igor Popov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph focuses on the European freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera, which is an endangered bivalve species. Most of its populations in the Russian section of the Baltic Sea basin had never been studied, although they were known in the past to the pearl fishers. “Rediscovery” included search for the previously unknown populations, revealing the facts of population extinctions, analysis of negative impacts, elaboration of conservation measures, and revealing of regularities in distribution. Patterns of land use and river management were analyzed. The procedure of “rediscovery” was applied for other animal species of Northwest Russia, which are threatened on a global scale – thick-shelled mussel, Unio crassus; curlew Numenius arquata; black-tailed godwit, Limosa limosa; Northern Lapwing, Vanellus vanellus; European mink, Mustela lutreola; pond bat, Myotis dasycneme; Atlantic sturgeon, Acipenser sturio; and broad-clawed crayfish, Astacus astacus. The methods and principles of conservation studies were discussed. The obtained data were analyzed with respect to current global change of biosphere. The book will appeal to specialists dealing with conservation studies and activities such as red lists, river protection, and conservation of endangered species. Moreover, a part of the book represents an interest for biogerontology as it presents discredit of the popular concept on “negligible senescence.” The data on distribution of some animals in Russia will be interesting in terms of zoology and biogeography, as they are not yet sufficiently represented in the international editions. The book can be used as supplemental reading for courses in biological invasions, ecology and conservation, and biodiversity. The work also contains chapters on global processes (deforestation, desertification, river degradation) and can therefore also be used for general courses in environmental sciences.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this reprinted classic (originally published in 1971) Noel Hynes compiled a comprehensive, critical review of the literature pertaining to streams. Included are physical and chemical characteristics of flowing waters, plantlife, the benthos, fish and finally, man's effects on watercourses. The book continues to be widely read and influential in the field. "Professor Hynes has produced a superb book." Freshwater Biology. "Dr. Hynes is to be congratulated on writing so valuable a book" The Journal of Ecology. "This is an excellent book, mainly for the student and professional, to whom it will be a mine of information and sound ideas for many years." New Scientist and Science Journal "This book is a must for the student of aquatic biology. The book, like the author, can only be held in the highest esteem." The Canadian Field Naturalist Noel Hynes is Distinguished Emeritus Professor at the University of Waterloo. He received his Ph.D. in 1941 from the University of London. After a period in Trinidad studying tropical agriculture, and wartime work on locusts in East Africa, he was appointed to an academic post at the University of Liverpool. In 1964, he moved to Canada to build the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo, where he remained until his retirement. His research has been concentrated upon the biology of rivers and streams, and he has published over 180 scientific papers, two scientific books and an autobiography. He has been honored by receiving the Neumann/Thienemann Medal of the International Society of Limnology, the highest honor in his field of work.
