Various quantities of birds were propelled into the engine inlet at velocities on the order of 125 knots by a compressed air gun. The engine was subjected to ingestion of a total of 59 starlings in densities ranging from 3 to 20 birds per test and one sea gull. Transient and steady-state engine performance was monitored and recorded during and following ingestion sequences. An abrupt fluctuation in engine performance was sustained in all tests conducted with subsequent engine recovery and stabilization being attained in approximately two seconds, with the exception of one test which required manual manipulation of engine controls prior to engine recovery. This test involved the ingestion of 20 birds and resulted in a continuous compressor stall condition until corrective action was taken. Residual contamination of the engine resulted in some decreases in overall engine efficiency. Substantial damage was incurred by the inlet guide vanes and the first stage compressor rotor blades during the course of the program. (Author).

Transient and steady-state engine performance was monitored and recorded during and following ingestion sequences. In general, a deterioration in engine performance was indicated upon ingestion of birds or portions thereof. Subsequent engine recovery and stabilization to operating levels below preingestion values were attained in periods from 2 to 4 seconds. Operating levels were reduced as much as 50 percent and were in general a function of the quantity of starlings which entered the inlet duct. Following multiple bird ingestion tests, the degree of inlet blockage prevented preingestion power levels from being attained. No evidence of engine flameout was recorded during any of the 16 test runs conducted, nor was any autofeathering signal indicated. There was no visible damage sustained by the engine which could be attributed to bird impact. (Author).

Book excerpt: Tests were conducted to determine specific reactions to the ingestion of birds up to critical quantities by an Allison Model 501-D13 turboprop engine/propeller combination. Performance data were obtained for operations at takeoff power and simulated airspeeds ranging from 100 to 140 knots. The engine was subjected to ingestion of 231 starlings in densities of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 birds per test, and ingestion of 1 sea gull. The simultaneous ingestion of from one to three starlings did not compromise test article operation. The siimultaneous ingestion of four starlings induced power disruptions which could preclude continued engine operation during an in-flight occurrence. The simultaneous and/or sequenced ingestion of six or more starlings critically affected engine/propeller performance and resulted in marginal operating conditions. The results obtained during the test program clearly indicate that multiple bird ingestions can critically affect gas turbine propulsion system operation without causing mechanical damage. (Author).
