The original work is divided in two sections, the first treating a modeling and optimization study of tubular reactors for methyl methacrylate polymerization in solution, and the second, an experimental and theoretical study of L-lactide reactive extrusion. In the first section, reactor simulations in similar operating conditions were performed in order to select a representative kinetic model among the published kinetic models for MMA solution polymerization. Two widely used numerical algorithms, one based on Pontryagin's Minimum Principle and the other a Genetic Algorithm, were compared for an average-complexity optimization problem. The results showed a superior robustness of the Genetic Algorithm for this category of problems. The second part of the thesis deals with the modeling and optimization of L-lactide reactive extrusion. A kinetic model is proposed and its parameters estimated using nonlinear estimation numerical procedures based on experimentally measured data. Reactive extrusion experiments were performed in representative operating conditions. The Llactide/ polylactide flow in the extruder was characterized by simulation using the commercial software LUDOVIC®. The simulated residence time distributions characteristics are used to model the reactive extrusion process of two approaches, an axial dispersion model and a compartment model, based on compartments whose characteristics are deduced from the simulations using LUDOVIC®. The modeling results are in good agreement with the measured data in the same operating conditions.

The purpose of this study is to optimize the process condition in polymerization in order to obtain maximum conversion in minimum batch time. The gel effect, glass effect, non-linear kinetic and high exothermic reactions were considered. Initiator efficiency and overall heat transfer coefficient assumed remain constant. Optimization of MMA solution polymerization was based on three stage polymerization model (TSPM) by using MATLAB software. Ode23t solver was used in solving this moderate stiff problem. The results showed that high conversion was obtained at optimum concentration of initiator (AIBN), reactor temperature and jacket temperature. Simulation of the solution polymerization of MMA in this study showed that MATLAB was an effective and economical problem solving tools in engineering works.

Book excerpt: Significant advances have been made in the understanding of living/controlled radical polymerization processes since their discovery in the early 1990's. These processes enable an unprecedented degree of control over polymer architecture that was previously not possible using conventional radical polymerization processes, and this has made possible the synthesis of many new and interesting materials. However, there has been only limited success in commercializing these new methods. Recently there has been increased focus on the development of more industrially viable processes. Dispersed aqueous phase reactions have received much attention because these water-based processes have several technical, economic, and environmental benefits over the more common solution and bulk reactions that were originally developed. Likewise, there has been some investigation of using continuous reactors that have potential technical and economic benefits over the more commonly employed batch reactors. This thesis presents an in-depth study that combines the three aforementioned technologies: living/controlled radical polymerization, dispersed phase aqueous reactions, and continuous reactors. Specifically, the system of interest is a nitroxide-mediated miniemulsion polymerization reaction in a continuous tubular reactor to produce polymer latex. Design of the continuous tubular reactor is discussed in some detail with a focus on specific technical challenges that were faced in building a functional apparatus for this system. Scoping experiments are described which identified a significant effect of temperature ramping rate that is critical to understand when moving to larger scale reactors for this system. The unexpected phenomenon of room temperature polymerization initiated by ascorbic acid is also described. There is demonstration for the first time that bulk and miniemulsion polymers can be produced in a tubular reactor under controlled nitroxide-mediated polymerization conditions, and copolymers can be produced. A detailed residence time distribution study for the tubular reactor is also shown, and several interesting phenomena are discussed that have implications on the practical operating conditions of the tubular reactor. This particular study makes it clear that one should experimentally verify the residence time distribution within a continuous system with the reactants of interest, and that model systems may not give an accurate picture of the real system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poly(methylmethacrylate), (pMMA), is commercially one of the most important polymers in the acrylic family. It is often polymerised, in bulk, to give clear sheets and with added fillers to form moulded articles. When silica is used as a filler the final product has properties similar to ceramic articles. The moulding cycles are typically 20 to 30 minutes, for thick sectioned products made from silica filled pMMA. Commercial pressure requires that this cycle time be reduced without detriment to the physical properties of the article being manufactured. Chemically, this is a difficult proposition due to the autoacceleration effect inherent in the bulk polymerisation of methyl methacrylate, (MMA). The objective of this work was to find ways of enhancing batch polymerisation rates by studying the following areas: The effect of temperature, cross-linking agents and copolymerisation on the bulk polymerisation of MMA The mechanism whereby terpinolene, when added in low concentrations, to bulk monomer, reduces the rapid increase in rate known as autoacceleration. The potential of using blocked isocyanates as thermally triggered crosslinking agents in the polylmerisation of MMA. Differential scanning calorimetry, (DSC), gel permeation chromatography, (GPC), gas chromatography, (GC), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, (NMR), infra red spectroscopy, (IR) and dielectric thermal analysis, (DETA), have been utilised in this investigation . The work has revealed that; Increasing temperature increases the magnitude of autoacceleration and delays it's onset to higher monomer conversions. Cross linking agents decrease the conversion at which autoacceleration begins and also show a more pronounced autoacceleration effect In low concentrations, terpinolene significantly reduces the sharp increase in polymerisation rate due to autoacceleration, whilst having only a minor effect on the overall rate of polymerisation and the molecular weight of the final polymer. It has not been possible distinguish whether terpinolene is acting as a degradative chain transfer agent or co-monomer when it influences the autoacceleration effect, however, results from this work suggest degradative.
