Book excerpt: A combination of visual and quantitative measurements is presented, providing a physical picture of the turbulent boundary layer flow structure on a flat plate. The flow structure is shown to consist of three zones, each zone has a one to one correspondence to the well known regions of the u+, y+ mean velocity profile. A wall layer region is shown to exist below y+ = 10. An apparently fully turbulent region exists corresponding to the logarithmic ''law of the wall'' and the ''buffer'' region. An intermittent zone appears to agree closely with the ''wake'' deviation region. An entirely new result of the investigation is the delineation of the structure of the wall layer region. This region is shown to contain a relatively regular structure of low and high velocity fluid streaks alternating in the span direction, together with the ejection of low momentum fluid into the outer flow. Correlations are given for the rate of ejection and the streak spacing. A qualitative description of other features of the wall layer region and the character of the remainder of the boundary layer flow structure is presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: Experimental investigation in turbulent boundary layer flows represents one of the canonical geometries of wall bounded shear flows. Utmost relevance of such experiments, however, is applied in the engineering applications in aerospace and marine industries. In particular, continuous effort is being imparted to explore the underlying physics of the flow in order to develop models for numerical tools and to achieve flow control. Flow control experiments have been widely investigated since 1930’s. Several flow control technique has been explored and have shown potential benefit. But the choice of control technique depends largely on the boundary condition and the type of application. Hence, friction drag of subsonic transport aircraft is intended to be reduced within the scope of this Ph. D. topic. Therefore, application of active control method such as microblowing effect in the incompressible, zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer was investigated. A series of experiments have been performed in two different wind tunnel facilities. Wind tunnel from Department of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics (LAS) was used for the measurements for moderate Reynolds number range in co-operation with the wind tunnel from Laboratoire de M´ecanique de Feiret Lille for large Reynolds number range. Measurements are conducted with the help of state-of-the-art techniques such as Laser Doppler Anemometry, Particle Image Velocimetry and electronic pressure sensors.

This book was released on 1966 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation is described in which emphasis is given to revealing the structure of turbulence near the wall in a boundary layer. Measurements made include space-time correlations between the fluctuating wall pressure and the span-wise velocity component w, and between the various velocity components. The velocity correlations include measurements of the space-time correlation of the streamwise component of the fluctuating wall shear stress. Experiments have been conducted in a thick (5 in.) turbulent boundary layer with zero pressure gradient which is produced by natural transition on a smooth surface. Sufficient data have been obtained to allow the proposal of a qualitative model for the structure of turbulence near the wall. The proposed model outlines the sequence of events that results in the production of intense pressure and velocity fluctuations by stretching of the vorticity after it is produced by viscous stresses within and near the edge of the viscous sublayer. The measurements are in qualitative agreement with the model. Qualitative agreement means that the size and shape of the contours of constant correlation and the sign of the measured correlations are in agreement with the proposed model for the turbulent structure. Book excerpt: The last two decades have witnessed an intensifying effort in learning how to manage flow turbulence: it has in fact now become one of the most challenging and prized techno logical goals in fluid dynamics. The goal itself is of course not new. More than a hundred years ago, Reynolds already listed factors conducive to laminar and to turbulent flow (including among them curvature and acceleration). Further more, it is in retrospect clear that there were several early instances ot successful turbulence management. Examples are the reduction in drag achieved with a ring-trip placed on the front of a sphere or the insertion of a splitter-plate behind a circular cylinder; by the early 1950s there were numerous exercises at boundary layer control. Although many of these studies were interesting and suggestive, they led . to no spectacularly successful practical application, and the effort petered out in the late 1950s. The revival of interest in these problems in recent years can be attributed to the emergence of several new factors. First of all, fresh scientific insight into the structure of turbulence, in particular the accumulated evidence for the presence of significant order in turbulent flow, has been seen to point to new methods of managing turbulence. A second major reason has been the growing realisation that the rate at which the world is consuming its reserves of fossil fuels is no longer negligible; the economic value of greater energy effi ciency and lower drag has gone up significantly.

It covers the fundamentals of turbulence, various modeling approaches, and experimental studies. The fundamentals section includes isotropic turbulence and anistropic turbulence, turbulent flow dynamics, free shear layers, turbulent boundary layers and plumes. The modeling section focuses on topics such as eddy viscosity models, standard K-E Models, Direct Numerical Stimulation, Large Eddy Simulation, and their applications. The measurement of turbulent fluctuations experiments in isothermal and stratified turbulent flows are explored in the experimental methods section. Special topics include modeling of near wall turbulent flows, compressible turbulent flows, and more.

In this book well-regarded researchers not only discuss what they know and believe, but also speculate on ideas that still require numerical or experimental testing and verification. An initial brief history of boundary layer structure research is followed by chapters on experimental information and specific topics within the subject. There are then sections on computational aspects.

Book excerpt: The book "Wind Tunnels and Experimental Fluid Dynamics Research" is comprised of 33 chapters divided in five sections. The first 12 chapters discuss wind tunnel facilities and experiments in incompressible flow, while the next seven chapters deal with building dynamics, flow control and fluid mechanics. Third section of the book is dedicated to chapters discussing aerodynamic field measurements and real full scale analysis (chapters 20-22). Chapters in the last two sections deal with turbulent structure analysis (chapters 23-25) and wind tunnels in compressible flow (chapters 26-33). Contributions from a large number of international experts make this publication a highly valuable resource in wind tunnels and fluid dynamics field of research.
