Book excerpt: This report presents mean flow profiles across a two-dimensional, flat plate, compressible turbulent boundary layer. The mean flow properties were determined from pitot pressure and total temperature surveys carried out at three streamwise locations for wall to freestream total temperature ratios of 0.94 (adiabatic case), 0.714 and 0.54. All tests were conducted for a freestream Mach number of 3.0 with Reynolds number, based on momentum thickness, varying from 3200 to 4200. Although the outer two thirds of the viscous sublayer was probed, no evidence was found of a linear velocity gradient near the wall. However, the skin friction calculated using two conventional correlations were in good agreement with the trend of data. Furthermore, comparison of the velocity profile with Coles Law-of-the-Wake correlation indicated that the boundary is characteristic of a fully developed zero pressure gradient, flat plate flow. Results were in accord with those of other investigators for supersonic flows. In particular, the calculated eddy viscosity was in excellent agreement with the correlation derived by Maise and McDonald.

Book excerpt: As a prerequisite for relevant model development and improvement of design methodologies for supersonic vehicles, this study aims at investigating the influence of wall heat-transfer and shock interaction on the turbulence structure of supersonic boundary layers. Incipient separation conditions and two different wall thermal boundary conditions (adiabatic and cold) are considered. The analysis focuses on the evolution of mean and turbulent flow properties along the interaction region and in the relaxation region downstream of the shock-system. The strong influence of the mean pressure gradient is quantified through the analysis of mean flow profiles and boundary layer integral parameters. The anisotropic amplification of turbulent quantities through the interaction region is characterized and the turbulent events associated with the modification of the turbulence structure of the perturbed boundary layer are identified. The mean and turbulent thermal fields are shown to be strongly modified by the wall cooling which significantly dampens more particularly the turbulent thermal quantities levels across the boundary layer.

Book excerpt: An analytical approach toward numerical calculation of the three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer on a sharp cone at incidence under supersonic and hypersonic flow conditions is presented. The theoretical model is based on implicit finite-difference integration of the governing three-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer equations in conjunction with a three-dimensional scalar eddy-viscosity model of turbulence. Comparison is made of present theory with detailed experimental measurements of the three-dimensional turbulent boundary-layer structure (velocity and temperature profiles), the surface streamline direction (obtained via an oil-flow technique) and surface heat-transfer rate.

Book excerpt: The characteristics of supersonic turbulent boundary layers on cooled surfaces having adverse pressure gradients were investigated to provide design information for hypersonic inlets. Tests were conducted at Mach numbers of 3 and 6 with values of wall temperature as low as 30% of the adiabatic recovery temperature. The adverse pressure gradients were generated by two-dimensional model including a circular-arc surface, an isentropic-compression surface, and an oblique shock generator. Velocity and temperature profiles through the boundary layer were obtained and the integral boundary layer parameters were evaluated along the surface. An analytical investigation was also conducted to provide a basis for evaluating the experimental results. It was found that cooled, turbulent boundary layers in adverse pressure gradients are thinner and less distorted than uncooled boundary layers, that the ratio of Stanton number to skin-friction coefficient is higher than the flat-plate value, and t at the total amount of heat removed is greater than that predicted by integrating local heat-transfer rates based on flat-plate conditions al ng the surface. Book excerpt: This three-year contract originally had two tasks: to investigate the structure of flat plate supersonic turbulent boundary layers (Task A), and to investigate longitudinal curvature effects in turbulent boundary layers (Task B). As a result of the work performed under these task headings, we identified a need to study the structure of simple, wall-bounded vortex loops. This investigation (Task C) commenced in the third year, and we feel that it has made a major contribution to our understanding of the ensemble-averaged structure of low and high speed turbulent boundary layers. The progress reported here is that achieved in completing these three tasks. Keywords: Turbulent flow; Eddies(Fluid mechanics); Flow visualization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the Final Technical Report for AFOSR Grant 89-0420, monitored by Dr James McMichael, for the period June 15, 1989 to October 14, 1992. Under this program, research was performed (1) to describe the structure of the large-scale motions in supersonic turbulent boundary layers, (2) to study the interaction of that turbulence with shock waves and strategies for controlling the interaction, (3) to differentiate between Mach and Reynolds number effects on turbulence structure in wall-bounded flows, and (4) to develop and implement new non-intrusive diagnostic techniques. The research is aimed at providing physical insight, and scaling information, for the development of turbulence models appropriate for supersonic shear layers. The primary experimental means used in these investigations were the Rayleigh scattering technique to study the instantaneous density field, the RELIEF line tagging method to study the instantaneous velocity field, and a dual hot-wire technique to obtain simultaneous velocity and density signals ... Book excerpt: The results of a detailed experimental investigation of the compressible turbulent boundary layer in a favorable-pressure-gradient flow are presented for zero, moderate and severe heat-transfer conditions. The studies were conducted on a flat nozzle wall at momentum thickness Reynolds numbers from 6,700 to 56,000 and at three wall-to-adiabatic-wall temperature ratios. An attempt was made to hold values of Clauser's pressure-gradient parameter constant. Complete profile measurements were taken with Pitot pressure probes and conical-equilibrium and fine-wire temperature probes. (Modified author abstract).
