Book excerpt: A Tangye VCP1 engine was tested under high pressure, variable temperature charge conditions using both early and late inlet valve closing points to reduce the effective compression ratio. It was thus possible to obtain performance data over a range of compression temperatures lower than is feasible with a normal cycle. The results serve to show the effect of compression temperature on an engine with a high swirl, single-hole nozzle, combustion system. The theoretical gains expected from use of the 'modified Atkinson cycle' were, however, not substantiated by the results. This was traced to the excessive values of the charge heating effects associated with the throttling losses which inevitably result from closing the inlet valve while the piston is in mid-stroke. The consequence was that the compression temperature was never low enough to have a really marked effect on combustion but, at the lowest temperature reached, there was some deterioration in performance attributable to an over-cool charge. Book excerpt: Multifuel capabilities in diesel engines can reduce fuel costs while taking advantage of accessible fuel supplies. Of course, there are problems which accompany the use of different fuels in an engine brought about by the variations in the fuel characteristics, (e.g., viscosity, compressibility) and combustion, (e.g., fuel sprays, ignition delay). This collection of papers features 4 papers on combustion theory and 13 papers on solutions to multifuel engine problems. It is augmented by a summary paper by distinguished authors in the field and a bibliography of related papers not included in PT- 11.

Book excerpt: The results are given of an investigation of some of the limitations that now prevent increases in the temperature level of engine cylinder heads, and a review of previous work in the field is included to supplement these results. Attention was given, in particular, to the effects of fuel knock and surface ignition on cylinder temperatures and the effects of cylinder temperatures on performance. Data were obtained from a Wright C9GC air-cooled cylinder and from a Lycoming O-1230 liquid-cooled cylinder.

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study was performed to provide the combustion and emission characteristics resulting from fuel-reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) combustion mode utilizing dual-fuel approach in a light-duty, multi-cylinder diesel engine. In-cylinder fuel blending using port fuel injection of gasoline before intake valve opening (IVO) and early-cycle, direct injection of diesel fuel was used as the charge preparation and fuel blending strategy. In order to achieve the desired auto-ignition quality through the stratification of the fuel-air equivalence ratio (), blends of commercially available gasoline and diesel fuel were used. Engine experiments were performed at an engine speed of 2300rpm and an engine load of 4.3bar brake mean effective pressure (BMEP). It was found that significant reduction in both nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) was realized successfully through the RCCI combustion mode even without applying exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). However, high carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were observed. The low combustion gas temperature during the expansion and exhaust processes seemed to be the dominant source of high CO emissions in the RCCI combustion mode. The high HC emissions during the RCCI combustion mode could be due to the increased combustion quenching layer thickness as well as the -stratification at the periphery of the combustion chamber. The slightly higher brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of the RCCI combustion mode was observed than the other combustion modes, such as the conventional diesel combustion (CDC) mode, and single-fuel, premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) combustion mode. The parametric study of the RCCI combustion mode revealed that the combustion phasing and/or the peak cylinder pressure rise rate of the RCCI combustion mode could be controlled by several physical parameters premixed ratio (rp), intake swirl intensity, and start of injection (SOI) timing of directly injected fuel unlike other low temperature combustion (LTC) strategies.

This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A second law analysis of compression ignition engine was completed using a thermodynamic engine cycle simulation. The major components of availability destruction and transfer for an entire engine cycle were identified and the influence of mode of combustion, injection timing and EGR on availability balance was evaluated. The simulation pressure data was matched with the available experimental pressure data gathered from the tests on the Isuzu 1.7 L direct injection diesel engine. Various input parameters of the simulation were changed to represent actual engine conditions. Availability destruction due to combustion decreases with advanced injection timing and under premixed compression ignition (PCI) modes; but it is found to be insensitive to the level of EGR. Similarly, trends (or lack of trends) in the other components of availability balance were identified for variation in injection timing, EGR level and mode of combustion. Optimum strategy for efficient combustion processes was proposed based on the observed trends.
