Book Synopsis Laser-based Investigation of Gas and Solid Fuel Combustion under Oxy-Fuel Atmosphere by : Sebastian Bürkle

This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxy-fuel combustion has the potential to reduce the atmospheric CO2-emissions of fossil fuel power plants by burning gaseous or solid fuels under an atmosphere of carbon dioxide and oxygen. The combustion under oxy-fuel operating conditions, however, is accompanied by major changes in the combustion behavior. The underlying chemical and physical processes are complex and highly coupled, which impedes investigations and modeling. Since tactile and most of the optical measurement techniques fail under the sensitive and simultaneously harsh environments of oxy-fuel combustion, an optical in-situ measurement system based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy is developed in this work. This system allows to investigate the thermochemical state of combustion gases with respect to the quantitative concentrations of multiple combustion-relevant gases and the gas temperature. In combination with a newly developed and applied measurement strategy, the system even allows for a measurement of the gas residence time distribution. To improve the measurement accuracy, multiple absorption line parameters are experimentally determined. The measurement system is applied to three oxy-fuel combustion systems. First, the thermochemical state of the laminar, non-premixed methane combustion under oxy-fuel atmosphere is studied. The turbulent, premixed combustion of the same fuel under air and two oxy-fuel atmospheres is studied in a 20 kWth swirled combustor. Measurements of the residence time distribution of fluids in the combustion chamber provide insights into mixing and transport properties of the flow. The thermochemical state reveals insights into the reaction progess and flow mixing. Co-firing of three different solid fuels in an assisting gas flame is investigated for a combined thermal power up to 40 kWth. Here, the char burnout of the particles is investigated. The thermochemical state of the combustion of pure torrefied biomass under air and oxy-fuel combustion atmosphere is investigated in a 60 kWth close-to-application facility and compared to equillibrium calculations.
Book Synopsis Combustion Behavior of Solid Fuel Ramjets, Vol. 1. Correlation of Reacting and Non-reacting Flow Characteristics by : Brian A. Binn
Download or read book Combustion Behavior of Solid Fuel Ramjets, Vol. 1. Correlation of Reacting and Non-reacting Flow Characteristics written by Brian A. Binn and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the relationship between the cold flow characteristics of velocity, pressure distribution, and turbulence intensity and the reacting flow performance and combustion characteristics of a solid fuel ramjet. The effects of configuration and air flow changes on the above characteristics were examined. Average regression rates and combustion efficiencies were not significantly affected by changes in configuration. These variations in test conditions significantly affected the centerline turbulence intensity but not the near-wall turbulence intensity in cold flow. Near-wall turbulence profiles in cold flow were found to correlate with the fuel regression profiles in reacting flows. The use of bypass resulted in decreases in regression rate and efficiencies for all cases. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine if there is a relationship between the cold flow characteristics of velocity, pressure distribution, and turbulence intensity and the reacting flow performance and combustion characteristics of a solid fuel ramjet. These variations in test conditions significantly affected the center-line turbulence intensity but not the near-wall turbulence intensity in cold flow. The use of bypass resulted in decreases in regression rate and efficiencies for all cases. Attainable performance appears to be most strongly related to near-wall turbulence intensity/mixing and to the amount of fuel reaching the aft mixing chamber. (Author).

Book Synopsis The Effects of Metallized Fuel Composition on the Combustion Characteristics of Solid Fuel Ramjets by : Adonis Karadimitris
Download or read book The Effects of Metallized Fuel Composition on the Combustion Characteristics of Solid Fuel Ramjets written by Adonis Karadimitris and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments investigated the effects of metallized fuel composition on the combustion characteristics of solid fuel ramjets (SFRJ). Metallized fuels were burned in a two dimensional SFRJ motor under conditions similar to actual flight conditions proposed for solid fuel ramjets. Pressure, air inlet temperature and flowrate measurements were taken using an automatic data acquisition system. High speed motion pictures were taken of the interior or the combustor during the burning of the solid fuel through two viewing windows located in the recirculation zone and just prior to the aft mixing chamber where the boundary layer was more fully developed. Tests were conducted at mass fluxes of 0.2 and 0.5 lbm sq in. sec, with pressures ranging from 57 to 200 psia and with a nominal inlet air temperature of 1100 R. Most fuel surfaces had a characteristic shedding of small, unignited flakes. The flakes are thought to be binder material, and were more prevalent at lower pressures. Occasional shedding of large surface layers was observed, especially during motor shutdown. Metallic surface agglomerations appeared to interact strongly with these irregular surface layers. Large magnesium particles exhibited the expected bright ignition characteristics. Boron particles were not observed, apparently because they were smaller than the resolution limits of the motion pictures. (Theses).

Solid Fuel Blending Handbook: Principles, Practices, and Problems describes a new generation of solid fuel blending processes. The book includes discussions on such topics as flame structure and combustion performance, boiler efficiency, capacity as influenced by flue gas volume and temperature, slagging and fouling, corrosion, and emissions. Attention is given to the major types of combustion systems including stokers, pulverized coal, cyclone, and fluidized bed boilers. Specific topics considered include chlorine in one or more coals, alkali metals (e.g., K, Na) and alkali earth elements, and related topics. Coals of consideration include Appalachian, Interior Province, and Western bituminous coals; Powder River Basin (PRB) and other subbituminous coals; Fort Union and Gulf Coast lignites, and many of the off-shore coals (e.g., Adaro coal, an Indonesian subbituminous coal with very low sulfur; other off-shore coals from Germany, Poland, Australia, South Africa, Columbia, and more). Interactions between fuels and the potential for blends to be different from the parent coals will be a critical focus of this of the book. One stop source to solid fuel types and blending processes Evaluate combustion systems and calculate their efficiency Recognize the interactions between fuels and their potential energy output Be aware of the Environmental Aspects of Fuel Blending
