Book excerpt: An investigation was made to obtain, by means of tests, information which will contribute to a better understanding and more accurate prediction of the strength and behavior of reinforced concrete structhavior of simple-span reinforced concrete beams subjected to impulsive loading. To accomplish this, tests of beams and of reinforcing bar coupons were made and the resulting data analyzed. The practicability of an existing method of computing the resistance of dynamically loaded reinforced concrete beams was also checked. To this end, comparisons were made between the test results and the pres subjected to dynamic loading. The immediate objective was the determination of the resistance and behavior of simple-span reinforced concrete beams subjected to impulsive loading. To accomplish this, tests of beams and of reinforcing bar coupons were made and the resulting data analyzed. The practicability of an existing method of computing the resistance of dynamically loaded reinforced concrete beams was also checked. To this end, comparisons were made between the test results and the prediction of the method of analysis. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The response of concrete under tensile loading is crucial for most applications because concrete is much weaker in tension than in compression. Understanding the response mechanisms of concrete under tensile conditions is therefore key to understanding and using concrete in structural applications. Understanding the tensile properties of concrete summarises key recent research in this important subject. After an introduction to concrete, the book is divided into two parts: part one on static response and part two on dynamic response. Part one starts with a summary chapter on the most important parameters that affect the tensile response of concrete. Chapters show how multi scale modelling is used to relate concrete composition to tensile properties. Part two focuses on dynamic response and starts with an introduction to the different regimes of dynamic loading, ranging from the low frequency loading by wind or earthquakes up to the extreme dynamic conditions due to explosions and ballistic impacts. Following chapters review dynamic testing techniques and devices that deal with the various regimes of dynamic loading. Later chapters highlight the dynamic behaviour of concrete from different viewpoints, and the book ends with a chapter on practical examples of how detailed knowledge on tensile properties is used by engineers in structural applications. Drawing on the work of some of the leading experts in the field, Understanding the tensile properties of concrete is a valuable reference for civil and structural engineers as well as those researching this important material. Summarises key recent research in the areas of understanding the response mechanisms of concrete under tensile conditions Provides a summary of the most important parameters that affect the tensile response of concrete and shows how multi scale modeling is used to relate concrete composition to tensile properties Highlights the dynamic behaviour of concrete from different viewpoints and provides practical examples of how detailed knowledge on tensile properties is used by engineers in structural applications

Book excerpt: This book describes the application of nonlinear static and dynamic analysis for the design, maintenance and seismic strengthening of reinforced concrete structures. The latest structural and RC constitutive modelling techniques are described in detail, with particular attention given to multi-dimensional cracking and damage assessment, and their practical applications for performance-based design. Other subjects covered include 2D/3D analysis techniques, bond and tension stiffness, shear transfer, compression and confinement. It can be used in conjunction with WCOMD and COM3 software Nonlinear Mechanics of Reinforced Concrete presents a practical methodology for structural engineers, graduate students and researchers concerned with the design and maintenance of concrete structures.

Book excerpt: Behaviour of Building Structures Subjected to Progressive Collapse gives in-depth and up-to-date quantitative and numerical analysis of building structures against progressive collapse. It does so at various levels, including bare steel joints, composite joints and sub-assemblages and frames under quasi-static loading conditions. The book provides analysis of the force transfer mechanisms of composite structures and reinforced concrete structures, along with detailed numerical models that shed light on the effects of critical parameters on progressive collapse resistances. It includes direct design methods that take into account various collapse-resisting mechanisms. The collapse of the World Trade Center in New York has spurred extensive experimental study and numerical analysis of the structural behavior of buildings under progressive collapse scenarios. Although design guidelines have been published by governments, most are missing up-to-date numerical and experimental results, quantitative accounts of force transfer mechanisms, and numerical guidelines. Offers in-depth analysis and numerical modeling for building structures against progressive collapse Provides analysis of the force-transfer mechanisms of composite and reinforced concrete structures Gives detailed numerical models that shed light on the effects of critical parameters on progressive resistances Includes direct design methods that take into account various collapse resisting mechanisms Offers a comprehensive reference for progressive collapse analysis and the design of building structures
