Book excerpt: Samples of natural rubber, synthetic rubber, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) waterstops (stressed, unstressed, and embedded) were exposed at Treat Island, Maine; at St. Augustine, Florida; near St. Louis, Missouri; near New Orleans, Louisiana; and at Jackson, Mississippi, to determine the effect of various exposure conditions. The exposure conditions were as follows: (a) exposure to freezing and thawing in a marine environment, (b) exposure to wetting and drying in a warm marine environment, (c) outdoor exposure in a moderate climate, (d) indoor exposure (air without sunlight), (e) exposure in a weak solution of sodium and magnesium sulfate, (f) exposure to cold contaminated water, (g) exposure to cold fresh water, (h) exposure to warm contaminated water, and (i) exposure to warm fresh water. The samples were exposed during the period 1957-1959, and visual inspections of the exposed specimens were made periodically.

Book excerpt: This report describes the investigation of nonmetallic waterstops being conducted to evaluate the durability of waterstops of various types and materials. It describes results of additional laboratory tests on materials previously tested, and of laboratory tests on two new materials, gives conditions of speciments which have been subjected to various types of field and laboratory exposure for periods of about two to five years, and includes a summary of the service record of nonmetallic waterstops in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers field installations. Twenty-two nonmetallic waterstop materials are included in these tests, consisting of: 12 standard or cold- weather PVC, 2 polyethylenes, and 8 natural or synthetic rubbers. These materials were received both as finished waterstops and as sheets certified to be of the same material as the finished waterstops. The laboratory tests were performed on samples taken from the sheets, and the exposure tests on finished waterstops. Book excerpt: This is the fifth report in the Investigation of Nonmetallic Waterstops series, and presents the results of tests conducted to evaluate the water-retaining properties of labyrinth-shaped waterstops of two shapes. The advantage of labyrinth waterstops over waterstops of conventional shape is that the use of labyrinth waterstops does not require splitting and bracing of concrete forms so that the waterstop can protrude from one placement into the area where the next placement will come. Since the Corps of Engineers is now allowing the use of labyrinth waterstops under certain conditions where little or no differential joint movement is expected, there was a need to know how well labyrinth waterstops inhibit the passage of water through a joint. Report 4 of the series included the results of water-retentivity tests of conventional waterstops of four shapes, and the results of the tests of the labyrinth waterstops reported herein are compared with those results obtained earlier. The results of the tests and comparisons indicate that labyrinth waterstops are as effective in retaining water as conventionally shaped waterstops when there is no joint separation. (Author).

Book excerpt: Corps of Engineers Specifications for rubber and polyvinylchloride (PVC) waterstops require that the manufacturer furnish sheet material from the same lot as the finished waterstop for acceptance testing. Since the sheet samples have been found in some cases to have properties different from the finished waterstop, a study was made to determine the feasibility of preparing all test samples in the laboratory from the finished waterstop. Two natural rubber and two PVC specimens were tested. A molding study was also conducted to determine the optimum temperature-time-pressure combination for preparing test samples. Test results confirmed that sheet samples submitted by the manufacturer were not always representative of the finished waterstop and indicated that laboratory-prepared specimens were more representative. The type of equipment to be used in molding, slicing, and grinding the waterstop is described in the report. (Author).
