Book excerpt: This memorandum presents the results to date of a study of the problem of re-entry into the earth's atmosphere, by a vehicle returning from a space flight mission. Various re-entry conditions are studied using aerodynamic lift for deceleration and range control. Particular attention is given to cases where re-entry velocity is equal to escape velocity. The report shows that for non-lifting trajectories with re-entry velocity of 11,000 m/s (approximately escape velocity) only 0.4 degree variation in re-entry path angle is allowable if peak deceleration is to be held less than 10 g's. Range from re-entry to impact is shown to be variable up to 10,000 km for re-entry with escape velocity. (Author).

Book excerpt: A faster method for computing optimal three dimensional trajectories that maximize the landing footprint of a lifting re-entry vehicle has been developed. The method uses energy approximations based on the assumption that the flight path angle is small and the flight path angular rate is zero. Thus, the vertical component of lift is considered equal to the weight minus centrifugal relief, and the equation of motion are reduced in order from six to four. Because of this simplification, the classical indirect method of the calculus of variations is used to compute families of optimal solutions. Using data corresponding to one of the space shuttle configurations, computations have been carried out for both unconstrained trajectories and for solutions that have aerodynamic heating rates and lift coefficients limited to specified values. During the investigation, several interesting analytical finds were uncovered that could be used as a basis for an onboard guidance scheme. (Author).

Thus, this report deals almost exclusively with some form of dynamic inversion (DI). Two vital aspects of control theory - noninteracting control laws and the transformation of nonlinear systems into equivalent linear systems - are embodied in DI. Though there is no doubt that the mathematical tools and underlying theory are widely available, there are open issues as to the practicality of using DI as the only or primary design approach for reentry articles.
