Book excerpt: The Houston-Galveston region—comprising Harris and Galveston Counties and adjacent parts of Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Grimes, Liberty, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Walker, and Waller Counties (fig. 1)—is one of the largest areas of subsidence in the United States (Galloway and others, 1999). Most of the subsidence in the Houston-Galveston region (which includes the greater Houston metropolitan area) has occurred as a direct result of groundwater withdrawals for municipal supply, industrial use, and irrigation that depressured and dewatered the major aquifers in the area, thereby causing compaction of the clay layers of the aquifer sediments (Kasmarek and others, 2010; Johnson and others, 2011). Groundwater has historically been the principal source of water for municipal, industrial, and agricultural uses, and groundwater use in the Houston-Galveston region had increased rapidly for many decades to meet the water needs of the rapidly growing population (Seifert and Drabek, 2006). Since the 1990s, surface water has been increasingly used to meet these water needs and reduce reliance on groundwater resources in the Houston-Galveston region (Kasmarek and Robinson, 2004).

Book excerpt: This book examines the process of injecting treated wastewater into wells to replenish aquifers, and thereby slow the process of land subsidence, and help to mitigate coastal flooding. It explains how up to fifty percent of sea-level rise may be due to land subsidence, and up to fifty percent of land subsidence may be due to aquifer compaction. The concepts covered discuss replenishing aquifers with clean water to reduce nutrient discharges into out-falled waterways; providing a sustainable supply of groundwater; reducing the rate of land subsidence; and protecting the groundwater from saltwater intrusion. Practical case studies from Virginia and California will be included.

Book excerpt: The general public’s aversion to drinking treated wastewater is evident, rooted in the reluctance to accept a direct pipe-to-pipe connection, for example, from a toilet to a drinking water tap. Despite advancements in treating black water from sewage sources to meet drinking water standards, there persists a general hesitancy to fully accept this possibility or understand the science behind it. The Science of Water Reuse explains how technology can sufficiently purify reclaimed water to potable water quality—even surpassing the cleanliness of the water available from conventional taps. It addresses the significant gap in the existing literature on water reuse, focusing particularly on the varied applications of reused or reclaimed water within municipal and agricultural contexts, with a specific emphasis on issues and technologies related to both direct and indirect potable water reuse. It serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, municipal planners, environmental engineering professionals, as well as undergraduate and graduate students. Bridges the gap between technical details and public comprehension, making the complex subject of water reuse accessible and relevant. Provides a comprehensive understanding of water reuse, including case studies for practical application. Contributes to changing public attitudes, making reclaimed water an acceptable source for potable use.

Book excerpt: Pressure on large fluvial lowlands has increased tremendously during the past twenty years because of flood control, urbanization, and increased dependence upon floodplains and deltas for food production. This book examines human impacts on lowland rivers, and discusses how these changes affect different types of riverine environments and flood processes. Surveying a global range of large rivers, it provides a primary focus on the lower Rhine River in the Netherlands and the Lower Mississippi River in Louisiana. A particular focus of the book is on geo-engineering, which is described in a straight-forward writing style that is accessible to a broad audience of advanced students, researchers, and practitioners in global environmental change, fluvial geomorphology and sedimentology, and flood and water management.

Book excerpt: Subsidence has been affecting many cities around the world, such as Nagoya (Japan), Venice (Italy), San Joaquin Valley and Long Beach (California), and Houston (Texas). This phenomenon can be caused by natural processes and/or human activities, including but not limited to carbonate dissolution, extraction of material from mines, soil compaction, and fluid withdrawal. Recent studies on Harris County, Texas suggested that surface deformation is driven by four major mechanisms: faulting, soil compaction, salt tectonics, and fluid withdrawal (groundwater withdrawal and hydrocarbon extraction). The objective of this study was to assess the land deformation rate in the northwest Harris and detect the effect of fluid withdrawal on subsidence. To achieve this goal, data from three complimentary remote sensing techniques Global Positioning System (GPS), Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) were used. The data of twenty (20) GPS stations acquired from Harris-Galveston Subsidence District (HGCSD) were processed using Online Positioning User Service (OPUS) of National Geodetic Survey (NGS). Two (2) of these GPS stations are Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS), and eighteen (18) are Port-A-Measure (PAM) sites. The zonal statistic method was applied on 2001 and 2008 Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) generated using LiDAR data. The Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) was performed using twenty five (25) ERS1/2 data. The rates of change in groundwater level and hydrocarbon production were calculated using data from 261 water wells and 658 hydrocarbon wells. Furthermore, the rates of change in groundwater level and hydrocarbon production were compared to the results of remote sensing techniques. The results of this study revealed the rates of subsidence ranging from 0.3 to 4.5 cm/y for GPS, LiDAR, and InSAR. The level of groundwater drops with a rate of 4 m/y close to the area where subsidence is the highest. Also, the hydrocarbon withdrawals are highest (~70 million m3/y) in areas sinking more rapidly. This study found strong correlation between fluid withdrawals and subsidence. Therefore, both groundwater and hydrocarbon withdrawal in northwest Harris are considered to be the major drivers of the subsidence deformation.

Book excerpt: The combination of remote sensing and ground truth has proven itself especially useful for scientific investigation within the last few decades. Using this approach, this research has investigated ground subsidence and sea-level rise occurring along the northern shore of the Gulf of Mexico. Specifically, this was focused over the areas of Houston and Galveston, Texas and New Orleans, Louisiana. Supporting this investigation were five methods: Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), radar altimetry, the Global Positioning System (GPS), tide gauges, and extensometers. Measurements derived from these methods allowed for the creation of velocity maps and local time series spanning the area of interest. This investigation produced the following products: Twelve (12) 4-pass interferometric-derived velocity maps constructed from raw ERS-1, ERS-2, and Envisat data spanning the years between 1992 and 2012. Twenty-five (25) sea-level anomaly time series from Topex-Poseidon (T/P) and Jason-1 Geophysical Data Records (GDRs) for assessment of absolute sea level change throughout the northern Gulf of Mexico spanning the years between 1992 and 2012. Twenty-eight (28) GPS stations observational data processed for secular trend analysis. Twenty-two (22) tide gauges stations monthly mean sea-level (MSL) records were obtained for secular trend and Fourier analysis. Seven (7) extensometers near Galveston Bay recorded compaction data which was then utilized for secular trend analysis. Results provided by radar altimetry found multidecadal variability (1992-2012) within expected norms with average rates of absolute sea-level rise bounded between 3 and 4 mm yr-1 within the northern Gulf of Mexico. Therefore, for those regions undergoing high rates of relative sea level rise, the majority is attributed to subsidence. The regions of Houston and Galveston were generally found to be stable. However, Seabrook (on the west side of Galveston Bay) and regions near the inlet of the Houston ship channel (Baytown and Channel View) require continued monitoring due to recent rates of subsidence higher than the surrounding areas and regional norms. The city of New Orleans was found to be stable and experiencing subcentimeter subsidence rates. Areas to the southwest of New Orleans (Houma, New Iberia, Morgan City, and Raceland) and near the peninsula tip were consistently detected by both ground truth and InSAR to be subsiding at rates in excess of 30 mm yr-1. Spatial correlation of the velocity profiles with tectonic and anthropogenic factors allows inferences to be made in regards to the underlying causation mechanism(s).

Book excerpt: This 116-page report presents the results of an investigation by the Utah Geological Survey of land subsidence and earth fissures in Cedar Valley, Iron County, Utah. Basin-fill sediments of the Cedar Valley Aquifer contain a high percentage of fine-grained material susceptible to compaction upon dewatering. Groundwater discharge in excess of recharge (groundwater mining) has lowered the potentiometric surface in Cedar Valley as much as 114 feet since 1939. Groundwater mining has caused permanent compaction of fine-grained sediments of the Cedar Valley aquifer, which has caused the land surface to subside, and a minimum of 8.3 miles of earth fissures to form. Recently acquired interferometric synthetic aperture radar imagery shows that land subsidence has affected approximately 100 mi² in Cedar Valley, but a lack of accurate historical benchmark elevation data over much of the valley prevents its detailed quantification. Continued groundwater mining and resultant subsidence will likely cause existing fissures to lengthen and new fissures to form which may eventually impact developed areas in Cedar Valley. This report also includes possible aquifer management options to help mitigate subsidence and fissure formation, and recommended guidelines for conducting subsidence-related hazard investigations prior to development.
