Book excerpt: In an effort to learn more about the microscopic variations in interfacial structures which lead to the previously observed systematics in first compound nucleation in metal-semiconductor systems, we have made measurements of 1/f noise in systems composed of thin metal films deposited onto semiconductor substrates as a function of film thickness or surface resistance. Near-noble metal films deposited onto silicon typically display semiconductor-metal transitions at room temperature as a function of film resistance or metal thickness. measurements of 1/f noise on thin metal films deposited onto silicon can thus be correlated with those observed electronic and structural transitions. Measurements of cobalt thin films r.f. sputtered onto silicon substrates at room temperature show a gradual increase in the magnitude of noise over five orders as the metal thickness is increased to near that of the critical value of crystallization at room temperature. This is followed by a sudden drop in magnitude over six orders after the semiconductor-metal transition has taken place and partial crystallization has occurred. The frequency exponent of the noise varies for these experiments from values near unity at high film resistance to a value approaching 2 near the critical thickness and then abruptly back to near unity when metallization has occurred. The results of nickel films show similar results but with significantly more scatter in the data and no clear trend for the frequency exponents.

Book excerpt: The phenomena necessary to produce device quality silicon films and silicon thin film diodes and transistors on an insulating polycrystalline substrate by hydrogen reduction of silicon tetrachloride are investigated. Deposition of device-quality silicon films on substrates coated with a mixture of oxides which are fluid at the deposition temperature is specifically investigated. During this quarter the substrate evaluation by light microscopy and electrical measurements of the silicon films was completed. The NMCS glaze formulation is the best of the five compositions evaluated. Surface structures of silicon films deposited at substrate temperatures from 1050 C to 1250 C are similar based on metallographic examination. Films deposited at 1150 C exhibited the flattest structure and most uniform spreading. X-ray and electron diffraction studies were initiated to further evaluate the silicon films. Thus far, the electron and X-ray diffraction patterns show Laue spots and no rings, indicating preferred orientation. (Author).

Book excerpt: This impressive thesis offers a comprehensive scientific study of the alkaline earth niobates and describes their nonlinear optical properties for the first time. It explores the crystal structure, electrical properties, optical absorption properties, hot carrier dynamics, nonlinear optical property and strain-induced metal to insulator transition of alkaline earth niobates using advanced experimental techniques. These alkaline earth niobates can have a strong plasmon resonance in the visible range due to their large carrier density, and this unique property gives rise to the emergent phenomenon of photocatalysis and nonlinear optical properties. This series of intrinsic plasmonic materials based on niobates, can be used as a photocatalyst to split water under sunlight, a novel saturable absorber in the high-power ultrashort pulsed laser system, and as a sensor in microelectromechanical systems.

Book excerpt: Heterogeneous catalysis provides the backbone of the world's chemical and oil industries. The innate complexity of practical catalytic systems suggests that useful progress should be achievable by investigating key aspects of catalysis by experimental studies on idealised model systems. Thin films and supported clusters are two promising types of model system that can be used for this purpose, since they mimic important aspects of the properties of practical dispersed catalysts. Similarly, appropriate theoretical studies of chemisorption and surface reaction clusters or extended slab systems can provide valuable information on the factors that underlie bonding and catalytic activity. This volume describes such experimental and theoretical approaches to the surface chemistry and catalytic behaviour of metals, metal oxides and metal/metal oxide systems. An introduction to the principles and main themes of heterogeneous catalysis is followed by detailed accounts of the application of modern experimental and theoretical techniques to fundamental problems. The application of advanced experimental methods is complemented by a full description of theoretical procedures, including Hartree-Fock, density functional and similar techniques. The relative merits of the various approaches are considered and directions for future progress are indicated.
