Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this thesis is to investigate the behavior of a thermoacoustic prime mover filled with argon. Data was collected for three different operating conditions: (1) prior to the onset of acoustic oscillation, (2) immediately after onset and (3) after the prime mover had reached steady state, at mean gas pressures of approximately 80 kPa, 205 kPa and 305 kPa. Measured values of 1/Q are compared to predictions of a theory based on Swift's work. After onset, Q is determined from measurement of the rise time of the oscillations. The data set collected is the first to span onset and results show good agreement with theory. It is concluded that the theory can be used to provide reasonable input for a model to predict the steady state waveforms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this thesis is to investigate the work output of a heat driven thermoacoustic prime mover. The experimental approach was to measure the frequency response of both a simple resonant tube and a prime mover for a variety of values of mean gas pressure and applied temperature different across the prime mover stack. A least squares fit to the frequency response yields the quality factor which can be compared to predictions based on a short stack, boundary layer approximation theory. The results are reported of measurements made on the lowest three modes of the prime mover in helium for mean gas pressures between approximately 170 kPa and 500 kPa and the applied temperature differences between zero and onset. The signal waveforms of the sound generated by the prime mover above onset at a mean gas pressure of 308 kPa are also reported. Results for the resonant tube have at most 3% difference with theory. For the prime mover, the measurements generally agree with predictions for the fundamental mode except close to onset. This agreement between measured and predicted results worsens with decreasing mean gas pressure. Agreement is poor for the second and third modes for all pressures used. Finally, the sound generated by the prime mover above onset is highly distorted, and the distortion becomes more serve as the temperature difference increases. The peak positive pressure amplitude of this signal at temperature difference of 325 C, 368 C and 453 C are 1.1%, 4.4% and 7.9% of mean gas pressure, respectively. Keywords: Acoustics, Thermoacoustics, Thermoacoustic heat transports. (JHD).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this thesis is to investigate the work output of a heat driven thermoacoustic prime mover above onset of self-oscillation. The exponentially growing sound wave, generated when a prime mover is initially 'turned on, ' was digitally sampled for a helium filled prime mover at pressures ranging from 238 kPa to 500 kPa and at temperature differences ranging from onset to 400 K. This data was then digitally filtered by a 100 Hz band pass filter centered on the prime mover's fundamental frequency. A least mean squares fit was applied to the envelope of the filter's output in order to determine the temporal absorption coefficient beta. From beta, the quality factor was computed. These quality factors were then compared to thermoacoustic theory. The agreement between the theoretical predictions and the measured results is extremely good at high mean gas pressures. As the mean gas pressure decreases, however, the agreement between the theoretical value of onset and the predicted slope of the data, increasingly deviate.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the evolution of the acoustic pressure waveform and temperature change across the heat exchangers as functions of time in a thermoacoustic prime mover. Measurements are reported for both nitrogen and helium gas under different mean pressures and initial temperature differences. Aspects of this thesis included the design and construction of the prime mover and implementation of a computer controlled data acquisition system. Tha goal is to form a set of data with which to test transient, nonlinear theories of thermoacoustics. The main conclusion is that models will have to take into account the performance of heat exchangers to accurately model the initial build up of the oscillations.

Book excerpt: Thermoacoustic engines can be used to pump heat using a sound wave (refrigerator or heat pump) or pump a sound wave using a temperature gradient (prime mover). The basic arrangement is a gas-filled acoustic resonator with appropriately positioned thermoacoustic elements. Two types of thermoacoustic elements are used in these engines. The first type are heat exchanges which are used to communicate heat between the gas and external heat reservoirs. The second type is the thermoacoustic engine (TAE), also known as a stack. The TAEs are sections of porous media that support the temperature gradient, the transport heat on the acoustic wave between the exchangers, and that produces or absorbs acoustic power. Previous theoretical results in thermoacoustics have been developed for TAEs with circular or parallel slit pore geometries. We have developed a general linear formulation for gas-filled TAEs having pores of arbitrary cross-sectional geometry. This analysis, which is very helpful in designing optimal engines, indicates the parallel slit pore geometry optimizes heat and work flow.
