The exponentially growing sound wave, generated when a prime mover is initially 'turned on, ' was digitally sampled for a helium filled prime mover at pressures ranging from 238 kPa to 500 kPa and at temperature differences ranging from onset to 400 K. This data was then digitally filtered by a 100 Hz band pass filter centered on the prime mover's fundamental frequency. A least mean squares fit was applied to the envelope of the filter's output in order to determine the temporal absorption coefficient beta. From beta, the quality factor was computed. These quality factors were then compared to thermoacoustic theory. The agreement between the theoretical predictions and the measured results is extremely good at high mean gas pressures. As the mean gas pressure decreases, however, the agreement between the theoretical value of onset and the predicted slope of the data, increasingly deviate.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: This annual report details progress in basic research in thermoacoustic heat transport made during the period October 1, 1992 through September 30, 1993. Our major research efforts in FY 1993 were concentrated in five areas: (1) an analysis of the initial buildup of oscillations in thermoacoustic prime movers; (2) an investigation of stability curves for a thermoacoustic prime mover, (3) initial measurements of the velocity field in thermoacoustic engines using laser Doppler anemometry, (4) measurements of heat exchanger performance in a thermoacoustic prime mover, (5) a preliminary investigation of heat driven refrigerators. In addition to these areas, FY 1993 research efforts also included a collaborative experiment on traveling wave thermoacoustic effects. A brief review of the motivation behind these studies and a summary of the important results are contained in this technical report. A publications, patents, presentations, and honors report is also included. Thermoacoustics, Prime wavers, Heat transport, Nonlinear acoustics.

Book excerpt: This annual report details progress in basic research in thermoacoustic heat transport made during the period October 1, 1991 through September 30, 1992. Our major research efforts were concentrated in two areas during FY1992: (1) a standing wave analysis of the low amplitude performance of thermoacoustic prime movers both below and above the onset of self-oscillation and (2) a study of finite amplitude standing waves in both harmonic and anharmonic tubes. In addition to these areas, FY1992 research efforts also included the investigation of heat driven refrigerators and preliminary work on investigations of thermoacoustic engines with laser Doppler anemometry. This technical report summarizes the important results of these projects. A publications, patents, presentations, and honors report is also included ... Thermoacoustics, Prime movers, Heat transport, Standing waves, Nonlinear acoustics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this thesis is to investigate the behavior of a thermoacoustic prime mover filled with argon. Data was collected for three different operating conditions: (1) prior to the onset of acoustic oscillation, (2) immediately after onset and (3) after the prime mover had reached steady state, at mean gas pressures of approximately 80 kPa, 205 kPa and 305 kPa. Measured values of 1/Q are compared to predictions of a theory based on Swift's work. After onset, Q is determined from measurement of the rise time of the oscillations. The data set collected is the first to span onset and results show good agreement with theory. It is concluded that the theory can be used to provide reasonable input for a model to predict the steady state waveforms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general performance of a thermoacoustic prime mover or refrigerator is reasonably well understood. There are notable discrepancies between theory and experiment. These discrepancies are typically attributed to nonlinear terms not included in the theory. There is evidence, however, that interactions between elements in the thermoacoustic device are at least partially responsible. An experimental investigation of the element interactions in a thermoacoustic prime mover and comparison to theoretical predictions was undertaken in this dissertation to minimize the temperature difference across the stack necessary to achieve onset of self oscillations (Delta T). This was accomplished by varying the position or physical dimensions of the thermoacoustic system or elements to modify the interactions and modifying the working fluid properties through binary mixing.

Book excerpt: This updated new edition provides an introduction to the field of thermoacoustics. All of the key aspects of the topic are introduced, with the goal of helping the reader to acquire both an intuitive understanding and the ability to design hardware, build it, and assess its performance. Weaving together intuition, mathematics, and experimental results, this text equips readers with the tools to bridge the fields of thermodynamics and acoustics. At the same time, it remains firmly grounded in experimental results, basing its discussions on the distillation of a body of experiments spanning several decades and countries. The book begins with detailed treatment of the fundamental physical laws that underlie thermoacoustics. It then goes on to discuss key concepts, including simple oscillations, waves, power, and efficiency. The remaining portions of the book delve into more advanced topics and address practical concerns in applications chapters on hardware and measurements. With its careful progression and end-of-chapter exercises, this book will appeal to graduate students in physics and engineering as well as researchers and practitioners in either acoustics or thermodynamics looking to explore the possibilities of thermoacoustics. This revised and expanded second edition has been updated with an eye to modern technology, including computer animations and DeltaEC examples.
