These models approximate the behavior of the joint under carefully developed operating conditions. When these conditions change, the model has to be changed. Recent developments in numeric codes like finite elements have created interest in incorporating joint models into the design process but joint models need to represent the joined structure over a broader operating range. This work investigates the dynamic response of a structure with a joint. Isolation of a few dominant effects may give way to a model able to capture a broader operating range. To isolate the effects of the joint two specimens were created. A specimen that is without a joint serves as a control. The second specimen is geometrically similar and contains a double lap joint with a bolt fastener. The differences between the specimens represent the effects of the bolt. Control variables of bolt tension, excitation level and sampling time were chosen. Amplitude response and hysteresis curves were recorded. This data was used to examine the non-linear response of the bolted specimen. Qualitative observations are included. The control specimen shows little effect from non-linear behavior in the frequency response. The bolted specimen shows non-linear behavior in the frequency response. When the joint is introduced to the geometry the system drops in amplitude, drops in resonant frequency, and demonstrates a non-linear softening effect. As the initial bolt tension is reduced the magnitudes of these changes increase. In addition when the system is allowed to dwell with a single sine wave at resonance the amplitude of the response often increases. Hysteresis curves reveal that more than a softening non-linearity affects the response. The curve shows a softening affect when displacing in one direction and a hardening affect when displacing in the opposite direction. This may be affected by the geometry as the control specimen demonstrates a tri-linear stiffness. It is evident that previous joint models do not capture all of the effects observed. Additional research to link the physical cause to the observed affect will aid in adjusting or creating a joint model to be used in numeric codes.

Book excerpt: The Mechanics of Threaded Fasteners and Bolted Joints outlines how threaded fasteners and bolted joints fail, how these failures can be remedied, and ultimately how to avoid them altogether through tightening methods, material strength, and avoiding loosening. The book demonstrates how to select the appropriate tightening method and determine the optimal tightening procedure for varying nominal diameters. Using the finite element method, it discusses characteristics of stress concentration and fatigue strength and covers bolt force variation due to elastic interaction. The separation of the plate interface via increased external force as the primary cause of fatigue failure in threaded fasteners is discussed, with effective countermeasures provided. Empirical equations of thermal contact coefficient and apparent thermal contact coefficient in simple form are included as well.?? Outlines various tightening methods such as torque control, angle control, direct tension, and thermal expansion Demonstrates methods for preventing fatigue failure Discusses the effect of high and low temperature thermal loads on the strength of bolted joints by looking at thermal contact resistance at the interface

This book was released on 2013 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reliability and stability of any bolted joint depends on the level and stability of clamp load generated by the tightening process. Hence, it very critical to understand the role of key process control parameters that affect the tightening process and also how in-service loads can affect the clamp load in a joint. This Ph.D. dissertation investigates the effect of key process control parameters like tool speed and multi-stage tightening on the torque-tension relationship, and discusses the evolution of the friction torque components during initial tightening and subsequent audit tightening and/ or breakaway loosening stages. It also presents a method to create a non-linear three dimensional finite element model which takes in to account the thread helix angle. Results from finite element analysis for the torque-only process control method are in good agreement with the torque-tension predictions provided by the Motosh equation. The presence of non-parallel contact under the bolt head is investigated, along with other process variables like friction, thread clearance, bolt hole clearance, and grip length. Novel methods to simulate bolt tightening process control methods like torque-turn, tension control and bolt elongation or stretch control and presented and discussed. To understand the effect of in-service loads on the behavior of bolted joints, the dissertation provides a study which utilizes a three dimension finite element model to simulate and evaluate the cumulative loss in clamp load in a bolted joint that is tightened beyond its proportional limit. The joint is subjected to a fully reversed cyclic load that is applied at the bolt axis or away from the bolt axis to capture the effect of eccentric loading. An extensive survey of the literature on process control parameters, finite element analysis of bolted joints and clamp load loss in bolted joints under external loads has been included. The results presented and discussed in this dissertation, provide valuable information that will help design a more reliable joint.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of bolted wood joints has, to date, been primarily based on empirical work. Much of this has been on single bolted joints. The extrapolation of this data to cover multiple bolted and large diameter bolted joints is questionable. There appears to be a lack of basic understanding of the behavior of bolted wood joints as they are loaded to failure. This thesis is concerned with the development of two techniques that may be used to gain a better understanding of bolted joint behavior. The first technique involves the use of wood wafers or lamina which provide a two dimensional representation of a bolted joint during loading. It involves mounting a specially cut thin section of wood between two glass plates with a steel pin representing a bolt passing through the resultant wood glass sandwich. The approach is used to observe the wood deformation around the bolt in a plane normal to the bolt axis. It may also be used to simulate multiple bolted joints. The third dimension of the joint (in the axial direction of the bolt) is added by the second technique. This consists of taking x-ray scans of complete joints as they are loaded to failure. The bending behavior of bolts and associated wood deformation as they are effected by a range of joint parameters may be quantified in this way. The development and numerical integration of these two techniques will, it is hoped provide means to obtain a clearer three dimensional understanding of the behavior of bolted wood joints.

Book excerpt: Redesigned for increased accessibility, this fourth edition of the bestselling Introduction to the Design and Behavior of Bolted Joints has been divided into two separate but complementary volumes. Each volume contains the basic information useful to bolting experts in any industry, but because the two volumes are more clearly focused, they are easier and more efficient to use. The first volume, Non-Gasketed Joints, describes the design, behavior, misbehavior, failure modes, and analysis of the bolts and bolted joints that play a large, even ubiquitous, role in the myriad machines and structures that form our world. The author elucidates why proper bolt tension - often called preload - is critical to the safety and reliability of an assembled joint. He introduces many ways to create that preload as well as ways to measure or inspect for it, then covers how to design joints that are less apt to misbehave or fail, using the guidelines, procedures, and simple algebraic mathematics included in the text. The book provides numerous tables, charts, graphs, and appendices, giving you all the information and data required to design and use non-gasketed bolted joints. Now leaner and meaner, this new edition is better suited for classrooms as well as the practicing engineer.

Book excerpt: Fatigue of the pressurized fuselages of transport aircraft is a significant problem all builders and users of aircraft have to cope with for reasons associated with assuring a sufficient lifetime and safety, and formulating adequate inspection procedures. These aspects are all addressed in various formal protocols for creating and maintaining airworthiness, including damage tolerance considerations. In most transport aircraft, fatigue occurs in lap joints, sometimes leading to circumstances that threaten safety in critical ways. The problem of fatigue of lap joints has been considerably enlarged by the goal of extending aircraft lifetimes. Fatigue of riveted lap joints between aluminium alloy sheets, typical of the pressurized aircraft fuselage, is the major topic of the present book. The richly illustrated and well-structured chapters treat subjects such as: structural design solutions and loading conditions for fuselage skin joints; relevance of laboratory test results for simple lap joint specimens to riveted joints in a real structure; effect of various production and design related variables on the riveted joint fatigue behaviour; analytical and experimental results on load transmission in mechanically fastened lap joints; theoretical and experimental analysis of secondary bending and its implications for riveted joint fatigue performance; nucleation and shape development of fatigue cracks in riveted longitudinal lap joints; overview of experimental investigations into the multi-site damage for full scale fuselage panels and riveted lap joint specimens; fatigue crack growth and fatigue life prediction methodology for riveted lap joints; residual strength predictions for riveted lap joints in a fuselage structure. The major issues of each chapter are recapitulated in the last section.
