Book excerpt: With recent improvement in wood manufacturing technologies, taller and larger wooden structures are being constructed, thereby increasing the risk for potential damage due to a blast threat against such structures. Recent studies on the effects of high strain rate in wood have been undertaken, however the vast majority of these studies have focussed on structural elements with idealized boundary conditions. Some studies included realistic connections as the boundary conditions, but little progress has been made to date in order to quantify the behaviour of connections in isolation. The current study aims to investigate the response of steel-wood-steel bolted connections when subjected to blast loads. This includes determining the dynamic increase in resistance and stiffness for stocky and slender bolts in both the parallel and perpendicular to grain directions. The study also explores analytical solutions to predict the joint behaviour and discusses the validity of current blast design provisions. Bolted wood connections were investigated under both static and simulated blast loading using the University of Ottawa's shock tube. The study found a dynamic increase in resistance and stiffness when the failure mode was dominated by wood crushing in both the parallel and perpendicular to grain directions. No increase in resistance or stiffness was observed when bolt yielding dominated the failure. A loss of ductility was observed under dynamic loading for the parallel to the grain connections designed to fail in wood crushing. It was found that the use of self-tapping screw reinforcement was an effective method of preventing premature splitting failures and enhancing the performance of a connection. The results showed that connections which engaged the fastener in bending exhibited more favourable behaviour than connections which engaged only in wood crushing. A two degree-of-freedom model was capable of modelling the connections even when the support frame system had some flexibility. The validated model was used to investigate cases where the connection could contribute to the energy dissipation. It was found that the performance of the assembly improved when the connections were considered. Recommended future work includes an investigation of brittle failure modes in bolted connections, exploring connections with more deformation capacities, and expanding the experimental component of the study to include full-scale structural assemblies with wood elements and boundary connections. Limited design recommendations have been proposed in the current study, however testing at the assembly level could shed more light on such an important topic.

Book excerpt: The majority of research on high strain-rate effects in timber structures has been limited to the study of the load-bearing members in isolation. Limited work has been conducted on timber connections and full-scale timber assemblies under blast loading, and these have generally been constrained to qualitative observations. In North America, the increasing prevalence of mid- and high-rise timber structures makes them susceptible to blast effects. In addition, questions remain on how to design and optimize these timber assemblies, including the connections, against blast loads, due in part to the limitations on comprehensive design provisions. The effects of far-field blast explosions were simulated using the University of Ottawa shock tube. A total of fifty-eight dynamic tests were conducted on connection-level and full-scale specimens. The research program aimed to investigate the behaviour of heavy-timber connections when subjected to simulated blast loads. The experimental results showed that connections with a main failure mechanism consisting of wood crushing experienced significant increases in dynamic peak load when compared to the static peak load. In contrast, connections where steel yielding and rupturing occurred experienced no statistically significant increase in dynamic peak load. Full-scale glulam specimens with bolted connections designed to yield via wood crushing and bolt bending performed better than those with overdesigned connections. Bolted connections which failed in splitting led to premature failure of the glulam assembly. Reinforcement with self-tapping screws allowed these bolted joints to fail in a combination of bolt yielding and wood crushing, and provided more ductility when compared to unreinforced specimens. Specially designed energy-absorbing connections significantly increased the energy dissipation capabilities of the timber assemblies. The basis of these connections was to allow for connection yielding while delaying failure of the wood member. This was achieved via elastoplastic connection behaviour, which effectively limited the load imparted onto the wood member. Based on the experimental results, limitations in the current Canadian blast provisions were highlighted and discussed. A two-degree-of-freedom blast analysis software was developed and validated using full-scale and connection-level experimental results and was found to adequately capture the system response with reasonable accuracy. Sensitivity analyses regarding the applicability of using single-degree-of-freedom analysis were presented and discussed.

We have little knowledge about the effects of combined loading on the failure characteristics of joints with more than one bolt. In this thesis, two techniques are presented which enable such joints to be evaluated when they are subjected to a combination of tensile and bending forces. Firstly, a two-dimensional technique was developed. This involved placing specially prepared thin wafers of wood between two rigid Plexiglas plates. Steel pins passing through the Plexiglas-wafer assembly were used to represent bolts. Two bolt configurations and two grain orientations were investigated using the technique. Wafers were first tested to failure under tensile forces only, and following this, a series of tests were conducted in which combined tensile and bending forces were applied to wafers. Load-slip curves and visual observation of in-plane failure modes were used to determine the effects of combined loading on the behavior of the simulated joints. Results from preliminary tests using this technique suggest that bending moments can indeed significantly reduce the tensile strength properties of joints, and that the arrangement of bolts influences failure characteristics. A modified joint design (triangular bolt arrangement) appeared to be less susceptible to bending moments than the conventional design (three bolts in a line). Tests were also carried out on complete joints of conventional design (three bolts in a line). This was in order to evaluate the results from the wafer technique, and also to gain empirical information on the vulnerability of existing joint designs to combined loading. Results of the two-dimensional tests of the modified design were encouraging and full scale tests on complete joints with this new design are now considered warranted.

Book excerpt: Recent increased interest in the application of engineered-wood products, such as glued-laminated (glulam) timber and cross-laminated timber (CLT), in the Canadian building construction market has prompted amendments to be made to the building codes of several provinces. Until recently, the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) restricted the use of wood as the primary building structural systems' material by limiting its application to buildings up to only four storeys. The current version of the National Building Code of Canada, NBCC 2015, increased the height restriction to six storeys. The experimental research study detailed in this thesis has been carried out to investigate the behaviour of concealed steel-glulam bolted connections subjected to monotonic loading at both ambient and elevated temperatures. At ambient temperature, sixteen full-size test assemblies were examined, representing a total of thirty-two tested beam-to-column glulam bolted connections. The connections in eight of the test assemblies were strengthened perpendicular to the wood grain with long self-tapping screws (STS). For both unstrengthened and strengthened connections, increasing the number of bolt rows, each row having two bolts, from two to three rows increased the connection's moment capacity with increments more than that obtained by increasing the bolt's end distance from four to five-times bolt diameters. STS-strengthened connections failed in a relatively ductile manner in contrast to the unstrengthened connections. Increasing the number of bolts to six bolts in three rows in strengthened connections reduced the occurrence of brittle failure modes compared to connections with four bolts in two rows. Critically, STS-strengthened connections experienced increased moment-resisting capacity between 1.3 and 2.4 folds. The results of the ambient tests were used to verify the calculated moment capacities of the test assemblies in order to determine the full-service design load of the connection exposed to CAN/ULC-S101 standard fire in the large-size fire testing furnace accommodated at Lakehead University's Fire Testing and Research Laboratory (LUFTRL). Outcomes of the fire resistance tests revealed that increasing the number of bolt rows from two to three, each of two bolts, increased the glulam beam-to-column connection's fire resistance time by greater increments than those achieved by increasing the bolt's end distance from four to five-times bolt diameter. Strengthened connections were found to have an increased fire resistance time compared to unstrengthened connections. Also, the STS strengthening increased the fire resistance time of the glulam connections by greater increments than those obtained by increasing the number of bolt rows and the bolt's end distance.
