Book excerpt: While there is evidence to support the notion that extracurricular activities have a positive impact on student success and development, the reasons why students participate in these activities, why they continue to participate in these activities, and why these activities lead to better educational outcomes are unclear. This study was conducted at three high schools in a county in northeast Florida with a total n of 131 students. This study used three theories as lenses to examine how student-teacher relationships impacted student engagement in extracurricular activities and in turn student achievement: Self-Systems Processing (Connell & Wellborn, 1991), Attachment Theory (Bowlby, 1969), and School Belonging (Goodenow & Grady, 1993) to analyze the data collected from the surveys. This data collection for this study included both quantitative survey questions and open-ended qualitative survey questions that produced three main findings. First, overall, students involved in extracurricular activities had slightly higher mean-level perceptions about their student-teacher relationships (i.e., caring, trust, and help) than those not involved in extracurricular activities, but this difference was not statistically significant. Second, for students involved in extracurricular activities their perceptions of the student-teacher relationship were slightly higher for their extracurricular teachers than their general teachers, but again, not significantly so. Finally, there were no effects of extracurricular activity on academic achievement within this sample.

This study investigated boredom in adolescents, reported life challenges, activities involvement, and flow experiences correlated with life satisfaction and academic achievement as measured by grade point average (GPA). In general, the effect of extracurricular activities on a high school student's overall experience was investigated. One hundred and one high school students provided data on their extracurricular involvement, amount of choice in life, life satisfaction, academic achievement and frequency of flow experiences. Data was gathered in person within their high school. Mediation analysis was performed examining the relationship between boredom, time spent in activities, flow experiences, choice, life satisfaction, and GPA. The results of the mediation analysis within this study did not support the researcher's hypothesis. However, multiple significant correlations amongst variables were noted and discussed in detail.

Using 2 case periods of panel data from the Connecticut Department of Education, I used Baron and Kenny mediation analyses and a fixed-effects regression model to investigate data from a subset of 9th graders who participated in the survey in 2014. The same group of students participated in the same survey in 11th grade in 2016. There were 30,580 participants with both 9th- and 11th-grade data. This study finds that student perceptions of teacher support significantly explain the relationship between school belonging and academic achievement while controlling for school absences, socioeconomic status, school suspensions, minority status, and credits earned. These findings contribute to the existing literature on factors that explain variations in student achievement by teasing out the independent influence of school belonging vis-à-vis teacher support.

Such research suggests that students who establish a strong connection to school early in their academic career have higher academic achievement, better attendance, and more school participation (J.D. Finn, 1989, 1993; Finn & Rock, 1997; Sirin & Rogers-Sirin, 2005). However, there is little research that evaluates mechanisms that could be used to intervene when older students are on course for failure or delinquency. The current study, therefore, attempts to expand on the understanding of precipitating factors for school connection by investigating a possible link between school connection, extracurricular activity participation (EAP), and the relationships with teachers, parents, and peers promoted through activity participation. Latent variable structural equation modeling was used to investigate whether relationships with teachers, parents, and peers mediate the effects of EAP on school connection across time. Data from the base year (8th grade), first follow-up (10th grade), and second follow-up (12th grade) waves of the National Educational Longitudinal Study: 1988-2000 (NELS:88) were used. Three latent variable panel models were created and analyzed; one each for Relationships with Teachers, Relationships with Parents, and Relationships with Peers as the mediating variables. Results supported previous literature in that models reflecting a reciprocal relationship between EAP and school connection were found to have the best fit. Additionally, latent variable structural equation models were constructed to simultaneously compare the influence of EAP on the three types of relationships (i.e., with teachers, parents, and peers) and their subsequent influence on school connection. Finally, a latent variable structural equation model was constructed to explore possible differences in the type of activity in which a student participates on their relationships with others and school connection.

Previous research has demonstrated strong relationships between disciplinary events and academic performance, as well as between academic performance and academic motivation. However, there is limited understanding of the relationship between academic motivation and disciplinary events, or how academic motivation, academic performance, and disciplinary events are related. The purpose of this study was to examine student self-ratings of their academic motivation in grades 9-12 in a public high school, and to investigate the associations and interactive relationships between these three variables. Participants (N=78) completed the Academic Resilience Scale School (Cassidy, 2016) and school records were accessed for data on disciplinary events and academic performance. Using linear regression, the relationships between disciplinary events and academic performance, academic motivation and academic performance, and disciplinary events and academic motivation were analyzed. It was shown that disciplinary events were significantly associated with lower ratings of academic motivation and lower academic performance. Higher academic motivation was significantly associated with higher academic performance. Additionally, academic motivation was found to be a significant partial mediator on the relationship between disciplinary events and academic performance. Students who had disciplinary events, but reported high academic motivation, were found to have higher academic performance than students who reported lower academic motivation. Limitations of the study, implications for the field, and future directions will also be discussed.

Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, a growing body of research has linked extracurricular activity participation with positive outcomes among high school students. Extracurricular activities often provide a rich environmental context for positive youth development, given that they provide opportunities for identity formation, the creation of interpersonal connections, and the development of social, emotional, academic, and/or career-related skills. However, there are no studies to date examining the relationship between extracurricular activity involvement and student outcomes among students enrolled in rigorous high school curricula (e.g., Advanced Placement [AP] and International Baccalaureate [IB]). The purpose of the current study was to extend the current understanding of the relationship between extracurricular activity involvement and academic and mental health outcomes for youth enrolled in AP and IB programs by investigating the levels of extracurricular activity participation among AP/IB students, and examining whether participation predicted student success in terms of academic and mental health outcomes. Given the increased academic demands faced by this group of students, this study aimed to also investigate the overscheduling hypothesis to see whether there was a curvilinear relationship between extracurricular activity involvement and student success (i.e., a point of diminishing return). In addition, this study examined whether the program type (i.e., AP or IB) moderated the relationship between extracurricular activity participation and student outcomes. Using data obtained from a larger research project led by Dr. Shannon Suldo and Dr. Elizabeth Shaunessy-Dedrick (Institute of Education Science: R305A100911), results indicated that on average, AP and IB students (N= 2,379) reported being involved in 3-4 different extracurricular activity types and spent approximately 5-9 hours per week involved in extracurricular activities. Findings also revealed that compared to AP students, IB students participated in a greater number of types of activities (3.38 vs. 3.89) and more hours of activities per week (3.03 vs. 3.18, where “3” corresponds to 5-9 hours per week). Although a significant difference in the overall levels of involvement in extracurricular activities was observed between AP and IB students, these differences did not translate into differences in associations between extracurricular involvement and student outcomes. Finally, this study found significant linear associations between the breadth of extracurricular activity participation and higher levels of life satisfaction, lower levels of psychopathology, higher GPAs, and higher AP/IB exam scores. Significant linear relationships between the intensity of extracurricular activity participation and lower levels of psychopathology and higher GPAs were also observed. Regarding the overscheduling hypothesis, results from the current study found curvilinear relationships between breadth of participation and AP/IB exam scores and GPA, with optimal levels of breadth of 4.1 and 5.2 types of extracurricular activities, respectively. Moreover, curvilinear relationships were also observed between intensity of participation and students psychopathology and GPA, with optimal intensity scores of 3.2 and 3.3 (i.e., between the “5-9” and “10-19” hours per week response option categories), indicating that participation in 20 or more hours of activities per week was associated with diminishing outcomes. Implications of findings for school psychologists and educational stakeholders, as well as future directions for research are discussed.

Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. Specifically, the study investigated whether a linear or curvilinear relation existed between extracurricular activities and academic achievement for both in- and out-of-school activities. It was hypothesized that stress may be a possible mediator in the link between extracurricular activities and achievement Results indicated that students in grades 5 and 7 were involved in club and sport activities both inside and outside of school at fairly equal fi-equencies, with a mean frequency of approximately once a month. The hypothesis that a positive relation j between in- and out-of-school extracurricular activities and achievement was supported. The hypothesis that a curvilinear relation would exist between extracurricular activities and achievement was only supported for out-of-school activities. This finding supports the argument that too much or too little involvement in out-of-school activities is related negatively to a student's academic success; however, a moderate amount of involvement appears to be positive. The hypothesis that there would be a relation between involvement in extracurricular activities and stress level for both in-school and out-ofschool activities was not supported. Results were discussed in terms of educational implications and community resources for extracurricular activities.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological, narratological, heuristic study is to understand the phenomenon of relationship building between teachers and students at an alternative high school. For this study, the phenomenon of relationship building is generally defined as the language, information, ideas, and feelings between a teacher and student that affect perception, understanding, and value between teachers and students. Areas explored in this study include understanding how teachers in an alternative high school build positive relationships with students who had previously experienced little success at school and often felt marginalized, and understanding how that relationship becomes the tool to allow students to experience success in the classroom. Not all students share the experience of a successful high school career of academics and extra-curricular activities, friendships, or the culture of a traditional school setting. Over half a million students drop out of school each year (U.S. Department of Education, 2008). There are some students who drop out of school due to the lack of experienced success, ownership of the school, or a non-acclimation to the setting (Jessor, Turbin, & Costa, 1998). Being deficient in course credits and not feeling connected to a caring adult at the school may lead some students to develop a sense of hopelessness (National Research Council, 2004). Thus, alternative schools fill a void and provide students a valuable option for their high school education. Research questions that guided this study include: What do students and teachers perceive are characteristics that teachers, within an alternative high school setting, need to have to promote positive relationships with students? How do students and teachers perceive that program elements, within an alternative school setting, impact the relationship between teachers and students and their connection to school? Qualitative research was chosen for the purpose of capturing the lived experiences of the teachers in building relationships with students in an alternative high school. Qualitative research was selected because it would serve as the best tool for gathering students' and teachers' voices, lived experiences, and individual reflection on the goal of gaining access to human experiences. Patton states, a phenomenological study is one that focuses on descriptions of what people experience and how it is that they experience what they experience. Heuristics is a form of phenomenological inquiry that brings to the fore the personal experience and insights of the researcher. (Patton, 2002, p. 107) In the findings of the study, students and teachers emphasize that caring adults in a school are the vehicle to defining student success, through relationship building. The students and teachers identified the various program elements as positively impacting their learning and relationships with teachers. The findings in this study, centered on teachers building relationships with their students in an alternative high school, revealed three overarching themes: (a) adults relating to their students on a human level with interactions that have relevance, (b) adults being advocates for academic and behavior expectations, (c) engagement of students with opportunities provided by the school. This research expands the existing research on teacher-student relationships positively impacting students' learning and success at school.

Book excerpt: Student involvement in extracurricular activities (ECA) has been studied in the field of educational research in regard to its impact on academic achievement. This research reviewed the extant research regarding student achievement. In addition, it expands upon the limited research on the relationship these activities may have in regard to the teachers and staff who oversee them, and how this supervision and involvement of ECA impacted those teachers' job satisfaction. The findings of the current investigation indicate that supervision of ECA can have a positive impact on educational professionals. Additionally, the research has shown to substantiate positive impacts on teacher longevity, organizational commitment, job performance, and job satisfaction for those individuals who coach and/or advise these activities. Coupled with the research indicating a positive impact on academic achievement from participation in ECA for students, these findings support the prioritization of ECA by school districts and states, so that creative fiscal ways can be found to sustain such programs that have, in recent times, been eliminated due to budget cuts.

National initiatives have attempted to help improve student achievement through curricular changes and stringent testing requirements; yet, these initiatives fail to consider the importance of student-teacher relationships in student motivation and achievement. High school students' trust in their mathematics teachers can lead to better relationships and increased feelings of competence, or mathematics self-efficacy, which is consistently linked to achievement. Student trust is based on perceptions of a teacher's competence, benevolence, openness, reliability, and honesty. The aim of my study is to determine the effect of trust in a teacher on student mathematics self-efficacy over the course of a school year, accounting for differences between individual students. The sample consisted of 230 ninth through twelfth grade students (57% girls) from a large high school in central Texas. Students reported their trust in their math teachers and their math self-efficacy at 4 time points. Growth curve modeling was utilized to model the effect of trust on self-efficacy over time. The results indicate that trust predicted self-efficacy over the course of the school year such that for a one point change in trust there was a corresponding .4 point change in self-efficacy. Gender was also a significant predictor of self-efficacy, with girls reporting lower self-efficacy on average. However, girls did not report lower trust, and the relation between trust and self-efficacy was not moderated by gender. Inasmuch as future studies should seek to expand on these findings, this study is an important first step into investigating the link between trust in teachers and self-efficacy. The results of this study serve to inform teachers, researchers, and policy makers of the importance of recognizing student-teacher relationships as an important factor in building student confidence and motivation.
