Unfortunately, much of the intervention research and many of the practices used with this population focus upon their social behavioral deficits and fail to recognize the need to ameliorate their academic deficits. Clearly, there is a need to identify research-based interventions that focus on improving both the social behavioral and academic deficits exhibited by students with emotional disturbance. The purpose of this study was to examine the differential effects of self-monitoring of attention (SMA) versus self-monitoring of performance (SMP) on the academic and social behaviors of six, elementary-aged, African American males identified as having emotional and/or behavioral disabilities. This study employed the use of two multiple baseline across participants designs, counterbalanced across two classroom settings. The results suggest that both interventions were successful in increasing academic and attentional levels for all of the participants. Although neither of the interventions was found be superior for all of the students on the attentional variable, three of the students performed better academically when using the SMP procedures. For two of the students, the academic results were inconclusive; the student identified as other health impaired performed better academically while using the SMA intervention. The findings, social validity data, classroom implications, and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Evidence-based classroom management procedures that effectively promote student engagement and decrease disruptive behavior are essential in classrooms serving students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). A withdrawal design replicated across two classrooms was used to analyze the influence of a self-monitoring intervention component on the overall effectiveness of a randomized interdependent group contingency on the classroom behavior of students with EBD. Target behaviors included student engagement and disruptive behavior and teacher positive and negative statements. This study was implemented in an alternative school setting and 11 students participated. Visual analysis of data indicated an increase in student engagement and a decrease in disruptive behaviors upon introduction of interdependent group contingency procedures, though there was no observable impact on student behavior following the addition of self-monitoring procedures. No functional relationship was demonstrated between intervention procedures and teacher positive and negative statements. Discussion focuses on the contributions of this study to the current literature, limitations, the implications for school psychology practice, and recommendations for future research.

Book excerpt: This authoritative volume provides state-of-the-art practices for supporting the approximately 20% of today's K-12 students who have emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) that hinder school success. Leading experts present evidence-based approaches to screening, progress monitoring, intervention, and instruction within a multi-tiered framework. Coverage encompasses everything from early intervention and prevention to applications for high-risk adolescents. Exemplary programs are described for broad populations of EBD students as well as those with particular disorders, including autism spectrum disorders and externalizing behavior problems. The book combines theory and research with practical information on how to select interventions and implement them with integrity.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of self-monitoring appropriate and inappropriate behaviors with student-delivered reinforcement and self-graphing with a MotivAider® timer on increasing appropriate behaviors and decreasing inappropriate behaviors with students with Emotional Behavior Disorders (EBD). Appropriate and inappropriate behaviors were measured using frequency. Students used an individualized data sheet to count their appropriate and inappropriate behaviors exhibited during instruction, delivering a reinforcer to themselves if they met pre-determined criteria, and graphing their number of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors daily. Students were between the ages of nine and twelve. All four participants had a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyper Activity (ADHD) and were placed in a Behavior Learning Center within their school district. A multiple-baseline across participants design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. Findings indicated that the use of self-monitoring with a MotivAider®, self-graphing, and self-delivered reinforcement increased the number of appropriate behaviors exhibited and decreased the number of inappropriate behaviors exhibited.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Psychology - Cognition, grade: good or B+, Bahir Dar University (Faculty of education and behavioral science), course: Educational psychology, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Emotional intelligence, locus of control, self-esteem, test anxiety and academic achievement among Bahir Dar university students. A total of 89 3rd year Educational and Behavioral science students were selected using convenience sampling method. To collect data four questionnaires (EI, LC, SE and TA) and document analysis for AA were employed. One sample t-test, Pearson correlation, independent t-test and multiple regressions were used to analyze the data. The result of one sample t-test shows that students have better level of EI. The level of students LC is slightly internal as a group. Students had significantly high level of self-esteem and students have low test anxiety level. The study revealed that positive and significant relationship between EI and AA, EI and SE, EI and ILC, in contrast EI and ELC, EI and TA shows negative relationship. All EI dimensions show a positive significant relationship with AA. The independent sample t-test revealed that there was significance difference between male and female students in EI. Meaning males have higher score than females. There was statistically significant mean difference between male and female students. Female students have high level test anxiety than male students. Females are more external in locus of control than males. There is no mean difference between male students in AA and SE. regression analysis shows that LC, SE and TA predict academic achievement. On the other hand, the effects of emotional intelligence on academic achievement were found not statistically significant. Furthermore, the effect of LC and TA on AA found to be negative.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The current investigation evaluated the effects of a self-management package, which included self-evaluation and self-reinforcement procedures, on the completion and accuracy of independent academic seatwork. Three participants diagnosed with autism and other developmental disabilities were taught self-management skills using a least-to- most prompting procedure following baseline using a multiple-probe baseline across subjects design. Following acquisition of the self-management package, prompts were removed and generalization probes were conducted in untrained settings and with untrained tasks. Results suggested that the self-management skills of self-evaluation and self-reinforcement can be taught to students with developmental disabilities and that those skills can maintain and generalize to other independent seatwork tasks and untrained educational settings. Results are discussed in terms of collateral effects of the self-management package on completion and accuracy of academic and the generalizability of self-management skills.

Book excerpt: Students with emotional disturbance (ED) demonstrate educational needs in the domains of behavior and academics. Self-monitoring has been determined to be an effective learning strategy for addressing both of these crucial domains for students with ED. However, the characteristics associated with ED lead to a diverse population of these learners. As a result, further replication of self-monitoring studies are needed to determine the effectiveness on the differing needs of students. The goal of this study was to determine the effect of self-monitoring on the academic engagement of secondary students with ED during mathematics. In addition, the accuracy of self-monitoring by said students was analyzed. Finally, the generalizability of self-monitoring to differing conditions, such as a teacher's absence and other academic subjects, was analyzed for further conclusions. Analysis of the gathered data allowed the researcher to conclude that self-monitoring led to higher means of academic engagement.
