Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating Media Discourse explores spoken interactions in the media, drawing on contemporary sources from the English speaking world including chat shows, radio phone-ins and political interviews with leaders such as Tony Blair and George W.Bush. The main theoretical framework used in this work is influenced by Goffman, where each media encounter is viewed as a three-way participation framework involving the broadcaster, interviewee and audience, all of whom shape the interaction. The spoken media interactions are analysed from this viewpoint to illustrate how they are managed, how pseudo-relationships are established and maintained and how ‘others’ are created. O’Keefe brings together methodologies of discourse analysis, conversation analysis and corpus linguistics allowing the media extracts to be explored from different perspectives whilst providing multiple insights. Investigating Media Discourse will appeal to students and researchers of applied linguistics, english language and media. Anne O’Keeffe is Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at the Department of English Language and Literature, Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, Ireland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively and accessible study of media and discourse combines theoretical reflection with empirical engagement, and brings together insights from a range of disciplines. Within media and cultural studies, the study of media texts is dominated by an exclusive focus on representation. This book adds long overdue attention to social interaction. The book is divided into two sections. The first outlines key theoretical issues and concepts, including informalisation, genre hybridisation, positioning, dialogism and discourse. The second is a sustained interrogation of social interaction in and around media. Re-examining issues of representation and interaction, it critically assesses work on the para-social and broadcast sociability, then explores distinct sites of interaction: production communities, audience communities and 'interactivity' with audiences.
Book Synopsis Media Discourse by : Norman Fairclough
Download or read book Media Discourse written by Norman Fairclough and published by Hodder Arnold. This book was released on 1995 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of media language is increasingly important both for media studies and for discourse analysis and sociolinguistics. Norman Fairclough applies to media language his 'critical discourse analysis' framework which he developed in 'Language and Power' and 'Discourse and Social Life'. Drawing on examples from TV, radio and the press, he focuses on changing practices of media discourse in relation to wider processes of social and cultural change. In particular he explores the tensionsbetween public and private in the media and the tensions between information and entertainment.
Book Synopsis Social Media Discourse, (Dis)identifications and Diversities by : Sirpa Leppanen
Download or read book Social Media Discourse, (Dis)identifications and Diversities written by Sirpa Leppanen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume serves as an in-depth investigation of the diversity of means and practices that constitute (dis)identification and identity construction in social media. Given the increasing prevalence of social media in everyday life and the subsequent growing diversity in the types of participants and forms of participation, the book makes the case for a rigorous analysis of social media discourses and digital literacy practices to demonstrate the range of semiotic resources used in online communication that form the foundation of (dis)identification processes. Divided into two major sections, delineating between the (dis)identification of the self across various social categories and the (dis)identification of the self in relation to the "other", the book employs a discourse-ethnographic approach to highlight the value of this type of theoretical framework in providing nuanced descriptions of identity construction in social media and illuminating their larger, long-term societal and cultural implications. This volume is a key resource for researchers, and students in sociolinguistics, discourse studies, computer-mediated communication, and cultural studies.

The main question arising from this problem, which this study addresses is the discursive construction of social reality that is involved in the production and consumption of newsprint media. My central thesis in addressing this question is that within the framework of the 'one country - two systems', different newspapers such as the China Daily and South China Morning Post represent, can and do report the same events in entirely different ways that reflect their respective social, political and economic contexts of production and consumption. The aim is to undertake a comparative analysis of the these two English language newspapers in their coverage of the protest march against Article 23 and the related discourse involving the events that followed July 1, 2003. The research context of this study is in the domain of Critical Discourse Analysis, Systemic Functional Linguistics and Social Semiotic Theory. The study begins from the premise that in order to undertake a comprehensive newsprint media analysis, it is necessary to draw from a range of theoretical approaches depending on the focus of the analysis and the modes of media representation being analysed. The method used therefore involves concepts drawn from these theoretical approaches. The results show that the two newspapers do indeed discursively construct and shape the news according to the social, political and economic contextual factors of their production and consumption. The significance of this study lies in the fact that it also addresses visual elements of newsprint reporting, as well as discursive and textual features as they apply in the Hong Kong / China context. In short, this study investigates media discourse analysis by drawing on a range of theoretical concepts to achieve a comparative study of the two newspapers in question and how they construct the news and in turn are shaped by their own contexts of production and consumption. Book Synopsis Media Discourses by : Donald Matheson
Download or read book Media Discourses written by Donald Matheson and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2005-09-16 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most important questions regarding the relationship between media and culture are about communication. How are the meanings which make up a culture shared in society? How is power performed in the media? What identities and relationships take shape there? Media Discourses introduces readers to discourse analysis to show how media communication works. Written in a lively style and drawing on examples from contemporary media, it discusses what precisely gets represented in mediatexts, who gets to do the talking, what knowledge people need toshare in order to understand the media and how power relations are reinforced or challenged. Each chapter discusses a particular media genre, including news, advertising, reality television and weblogs. At the same time, each chapter also introduces a range of approaches to media discourse, from analysis of linguistic details to the rules of conversation and the discursive construction of selfhood. A glossary explains key terms and suggestions for further reading are given at the end of each chapter. This is a key text for media studies, mass communication, communication studies, linguistics and journalism studies students.

Book Synopsis Investigating Intimate Discourse by : Brian Clancy
Download or read book Investigating Intimate Discourse written by Brian Clancy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intimate discourse – that between couples, family and close friends in private, non-professional settings – lies at the heart of our everyday linguistic experience. It creates and sustains our closest relationships. Using an innovative blend of the community of practice model with a corpus linguistic methodology, Brian Clancy expertly reveals the patterns that characterise the shared linguistic repertoire of intimates. Corpus methods such as frequency and concordance are thoroughly introduced, exemplified and systematically employed in order to operationalise the concept of the community of practice in relation to intimate discourse. A half-million-word corpus of intimate data collected in various settings throughout Ireland provides the data for insights into patterns such as intimates’ use of pronouns, vocatives, taboo language and pragmatic markers. The intimate linguistic repertoire that emerges is shown to facilitate the delicate balance between our instinctive desire to be involved in the lives of those closest to us while at the same time recognising their need for privacy and non-imposition. Investigating Intimate Discourse will primarily be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers working in the area, and to those working in related areas such as discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics and pragmatics. Advanced undergraduates taking modules in those subjects will also find the book useful.
Download or read book News Talk written by Colleen Cotter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-11 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a former news reporter and editor, News Talk gives us an insider's view of the media, showing how journalists select and construct their news stories. Colleen Cotter goes behind the scenes, revealing how language is chosen and shaped by news staff into the stories we read and hear. Tracing news stories from start to finish, she shows how the actions of journalists and editors - and the limitations of news writing formulas - may distort a story that was prepared with the most determined effort to be fair and accurate. Using insights from both linguistics and journalism, News Talk is a remarkable picture of a hidden world and its working practices on both sides of the Atlantic. It will interest those involved in language study, media and communication studies and those who want to understand how media shape our language and our view of the world.
