Book excerpt: Marine boundary layer (MBL) aerosol particles are an important feature of the climate system due in major part to their effect on marine boundary layer clouds, but the factors controlling their variability are not fully understood. A better understanding of the budget and controlling factors of these aerosol particles is needed to evaluate the effect of anthropogenic perturbations on aerosol concentrations and ultimately cloud radiative properties. Using data primarily collected during the MAGIC field campaign in the northeast Pacific, complemented by aerosol and meteorological reanalysis, we consider a simplified aerosol budget consisting of advection, precipitation loss, wind-mediated sea-surface generation, and entrainment from the lower free-troposphere. A major feature in MBL aerosol variability is the strong seasonal cycle, with concentrations observed to be approximately 50 cm−3 in winter and 100 cm−3 in the summer in the focus region (northeast Pacific). We explore seasonal differences in the concentration of accumulation mode aerosol particle number concentration using a steady-state model, which captures approximately two-thirds of the observed summer-winter difference. We find that precipitation differences account for approximately 53\% of the seasonal difference in aerosol particle concentrations, seasonal differences in advection account for 25%, and wind-driven surface sources and entrainment account for 18% and 4% respectively. Secondary particle formation and growth from smaller modes are not considered. The longitudinal gradient in aerosol particle number concentration is well-reproduced in summer, but overestimated in winter. Sensitivity analysis weighted by estimated variable uncertainty show that uncertainty in aerosol particle advection and free-tropospheric aerosol concentrations are the largest contributors to modeled aerosol uncertainty. On subseasonal timescales, high aerosol concentration events (in the top quartile of 6-hourly means) are found to correlate with shallow, non-precipitating boundary layers with high overlying aerosol concentrations, with no correlation with wind speed; this was observed in both summer and winter.

Book excerpt: During late September and early October 1976, Calspan participated in CEWCOM-76, a research cruise aboard the Naval Postgraduate School's R/V ACANIA to investigate marine boundary-layer phenomena in the offshore waters of southern California. The objective of the four-week cruise was to investigate marine fog, aerosol characteristics, and evolutionary processes which affect optical propagation in the marine atmosphere. Measurements of visibility, scattering coefficient, winds, air and sea surface temperatures, dew point, total particulate concentration, CCN activity spectra, and fog microphysics were obtained, and hi-vol samples of the ambient aerosols and discrete samples of fog water were collected for later chemical analysis. The data were analyzed to provide descriptions of the microphysics and chemistry of marine fogs and the areal distribution of 'clear air' visibility, CCN activity spectra, and aerosol concentration and composition in a 150,000 km(2) area extending approximately 500 km SW of Los Angeles. The data are compared with those obtained on previous investigations conducted off both the East and West Coasts. In addition, limited experiments were conducted to determine if laser beam enlargement could be detected using a low-power laser over short propagation paths and if such measurements might be useful in assessing optical parameters such as size and concentration of aerosols and levels of turbulence in the marine boundary layer. Calspan's objective was the acquisition of data describing the magnitudes and spatial variations of a variety of aerosol and meteorological parameters in the lowest 20 m. Continuous or hourly observations of visibility, scattering coefficient, total particle concentration, aerosol size spectra (0.01 to>3.0 micrometers diameter), relative humidity, air and sea surface temperatures, and winds were obtained throughout the cruise. At less regular intervals, measurements of cloud condensation nuclei and aqueous sea spray aerosols and collections of aerosols for chemical analyses were also obtained. These data were used to describe differences between the clean marine air of the mid-Atlantic and the modified-continental air of the Mediterranean observed during the cruise and data previously acquired in the Eastern Pacific. In addition, complete aerosol spectra (0.01 micrometers to>20.0 micrometers diameter) were utilized to compute extinction as functions index of refraction, wavelength and changes in relative humidity. Book excerpt: Earth's radiation budget is directly influenced by aerosols through the absorption of solar radiation and subsequent heating of the atmosphere. Aerosols modulate the hydrological cycle indirectly by modifying cloud properties, precipitation and ocean heat storage. In addition, polluting aerosols impose health risks in local, regional and global scales. In spite of recent advances in the study of aerosols variability, uncertainty in their spatial and temporal distributions still presents a challenge in the understanding of climate variability. For example, aerosol loading varies not only from year to year but also on higher frequency intraseasonal time scales producing strong variability on local and regional scales. An assessment of the impact of aerosol variability requires long period measurements of aerosols at both regional and global scales. The present dissertation compiles a large database of remotely sensed aerosol loading in order to analyze its spatio-temporal variability, and how this load interacts with different variables that characterize the dynamic and thermodynamic states of the environment. Aerosol Index (AI) and Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) were used as measures of the atmospheric aerosol load. In addition, atmospheric and oceanic satellite observations, and reanalysis datasets is used in the analysis to investigate aerosol-environment interactions. A diagnostic study is conducted to produce global and regional aerosol satellite climatologies, and to analyze and compare the validity of aerosol retrievals. We find similarities and differences between the aerosol distributions over various regions of the globe when comparing the different satellite retrievals. A nonparametric approach is also used to examine the spatial distribution of the recent trends in aerosol concentration. A significant positive trend was found over the Middle East, Arabian Sea and South Asian regions strongly influenced by increases in dust events. Spectral and composite analyses of surface temperature, atmospheric wind, geopotential height, outgoing longwave radiation, water vapor and precipitation together with the climatology of aerosols provide insight on how the variables interact. Different modes of variability, especially in intraseasonal time scales appear as strong modulators of the aerosol distribution. In particular, we investigate how two modes of variability related to the westward propagating synoptic African Easterly Waves of the Tropical Atlantic Ocean affect the horizontal and vertical structure of the environment. The statistical significance of these two modes is tested with the use of two different spectral techniques. The pattern of propagation of aerosol load shows good correspondence with the progression of the atmospheric and oceanic synoptic conditions suitable for dust mobilization over the Atlantic Ocean. We present extensions to previous studies related with dust variability over the Atlantic region by evaluating the performance of the long period satellite aerosol retrievals in determining modes of aerosol variability. Results of the covariability between aerosols-environment motivate the use of statistical regression models to test the significance of the forecasting skill of daily AOD time series. The regression models are calibrated using atmospheric variables as predictors from the reanalysis variables. The results show poor forecasting skill with significant error growing after the 3rd day of the prediction. It is hypothesized that the simplicity of linear models results in an inability to provide a useful forecast.

Book excerpt: Global climate models (GCMs) are a vital tool for ensuring the prosperity and security of modern society. They allow scientists to understand complex interactions between the air, ocean, and land, and are used by policymakers to project future changes in climate on regional and global scales. The previous generation of GCMs, represented by CMIP3 models, are shown to be deficient in their representation of precipitation over the western United States, a region that depends critically on wintertime orographically enhanced precipitation for drinking water. In addition, aerosol-cloud interactions were prescribed in CMIP3 models, which decreased the value of their representation of global aerosol, cloud, and precipitation features. This has potentially large impacts on global radiation budgets, since aerosol-cloud interactions affect the spatial extent and magnitude of clouds and precipitation. The newest suite of GCMs, the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models, includes state-of-the-art parameterizations of small-scale features such as aerosols, clouds, and precipitation, and is widely used by the scientific community to learn more about the climate system. The Community Earth System Model (CESM), in conjunction with observations, provides several simulations to investigate the role of aerosols, clouds, and precipitation in the climate system and how they interact with larger modes of climate variability. We show that CESM produces a realistic spatial distribution of precipitation extremes over the western U.S., and that teleconnected signals of ENSO and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation to large-scale circulation patterns and precipitation over the western U.S. are improved when compared to CCSM3. We also discover a new semi-direct effect between dust and stratocumulus clouds over the subtropical North Atlantic, whereby boundary layer inversion strength increases during the most dusty summers due to shortwave absorption of dust above the planetary boundary layer. We find that ENSO exerts a control on North African dust transport during the summer, and CESM suggests that there is strong multi-decadal variability in the strength of the ENSO-dust relationship. Finally, we compare interactive and prescribed aerosol CESM simulations to demonstrate the importance of dust in increasing tropical Atlantic SST variability, and expose deficiencies in CESM's simulation of the Atlantic Meridional Mode.
