Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute "Cosmological Aspects of X-Ray Clus ters of Galaxies" took place in Vel en , Westphalia, Germany, from June 6 to June 18, 1993. It addressed the fruitful union of two topics, cosmology and X-ray clus ters, both of which carry substantial scientific weight at the beginning of the last decenium of the last century in the second millenium of our era. The so far largest X-ray "All-Sky Survey", observed by the ROSAT X-ray satel lite, and ROSAT's deep pointed observations, have considerably enlarged the base of X-ray astronomy, particularly concerning extragalactic sources. Cosmology has gained significant impetus from the large optical direct and spectroscopic surveys, based on high quality 2-dimensional receivers at large telescopes and powerful scan ning devices, harvesting the full information 1 content from the older technique of employing photographic plates. Radioastronomy and IR-astronomy with IRAS, as well as r-astronomy with GRO, continue and strengthen the role of extragalactic research. The rapidly growing computer power in data reduction and data storage facilities support the evolution towards large-number statistics. A most significant push was given to early cosmology by the needs of physics in trying to unravel the nature of forces which govern our material world. The topic of the ASI was chosen because it opens new vistas on this for ever new problem: the universe. Clusters of galaxies probe large-scale matter distributions and the structure of space-time.

Book excerpt: As the largest gravitational bound systems in the Universe, clusters of galaxies are useful probes of cosmology. X-ray observation from the hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) provides one of the best means to study galaxy clusters. In this thesis I first investigate one of the critical factors limiting the accuracy of X-ray measurements of the ICM properties in galaxy clusters, i.e., separating the ICM emission from the background. Using a set of synthetic cluster spectra created by simulating Chandra and Suzaku observations we quantitatively compare the performances of two widely used background-subtraction approaches, "background template method" involving subtracting background templates from nominally blank sky fields and "in situ background modeling method" involving detailed modeling of each background component and the cluster emission simultaneously from the cluster observation. We find that the background template method can lead to a statistically significant bias on the measured quantities when the background possesses a certain fraction of the total emission, while the in situ background modeling almost always yields accurate measurements, and therefore should be used for X-ray studies of galaxy clusters. We extend our investigations on in situ background modeling method using multiple apertures in the cluster outskirts, i.e., simultaneously spectral fitting of the ICM and background emission in multiple apertures of cluster field. Based on the analysis of the simulated Chandra and Suzaku cluster spectra in multiple apertures, we conclude that the addition of multiple apertures does not introduce significant biases into the cluster properties measurements, while the precision of these measurements can be improved substantially. The mass distribution of baryons and dark matter (DM) in galaxy cluster is essential for testing the dissipationless cold dark matter (CDM) paradigm of structure formation and cosmological scenarios. In the second part of this thesis I present a detailed Chandra study of 12 nearby, relaxed cluster based on the sample of Vikhlinin et al. (2006). We model the total gravitating mass of clusters as the sum of the hot gas, the stellar mass from the central cD galaxy, and DM. We find that the three lowest mass systems (M500

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galaxies, along with their underlying dark matter halos, constitute the building blocks of structure in the Universe. Of all fundamental forces, gravity is the dominant one that drives the evolution of structures from small density seeds at early times to the galaxies we see today. The interactions among myriads of stars, or dark matter particles, in a gravitating structure produce a system with fascinating connotations to thermodynamics, with some analogies and some fundamental differences. Ignacio Ferreras presents a concise introduction to extragalactic astrophysics, with emphasis on stellar dynamics, and the growth of density fluctuations in an expanding Universe. Additional chapters are devoted to smaller systems (stellar clusters) and larger ones (galaxy clusters). Fundamentals of Galaxy Dynamics, Formation and Evolution is written for advanced undergraduates and beginning postgraduate students, providing a useful tool to get up to speed in a starting research career. Some of the derivations for the most important results are presented in detail to enable students appreciate the beauty of maths as a tool to understand the workings of galaxies. Each chapter includes a set of problems to help the student advance with the material.

Book excerpt: Clusters of galaxies, which occupy a unique position in hierarchical structure formation, are invaluable cosmological probes and laboratories for astrophysical processes. Cluster scaling relations, which connect their masses and observable properties, provide the link between these two roles. Cosmological constraints derived from cluster abundances often rely on calibrations or functional forms of these relations. On the other hand, the form and evolution of the mass-observable relations are affected by astrophysical processes during cluster formation. Understanding these processes not only provides insights into cluster physics but also has important implications for cluster cosmology. In this thesis, we use numerical simulations to study the influence of important physical mechanisms, including gravity, radiative cooling, and heating from active galactic nuclei (AGN), on cluster mass-observable relations. In particular, we investigate the physical origin of the intrinsic scatter around the best-fit relations by correlating it with measures of cluster structure, dynamical state, and AGN activity. Using a cosmological N -body plus hydrodynamic simulation produced using the FLASH code, we study the impact of cluster structure and dynamical state on the distribution of scatter in the X-ray temperature and Sunyaev-Zel0́9dovich (SZ) scaling relations. We also examine possible systematic biases in cluster cosmology, such as sample selection in cluster surveys, assumptions in self-calibration studies, and correlated errors in combining X-ray and SZ mass estimates. Correctly simulating cluster properties, especially inside cluster cores, requires additional baryonic physics, including radiative cooling and some heating mechanisms such as AGN feedback. However, because of the extreme dynamic range required to capture the rich physics involved in accretion onto and feedback by the supermassive black holes (SMBH) in AGN, current modeling of AGN in cosmological simulations is highly phenomenological and relies on heterogeneous parameterizations. We perform a systematic sensitivity study on a variety of these models and parameters and quantify the current theoretical uncertain- ties in the predicted cluster global quantities. This study is an important step toward the development of more robust AGN models within a cosmological framework.

Book excerpt: This volume documents recent developments that have advanced our understanding of the heating and cooling mechanisms in galaxies and galaxy clusters. Chapters detail results from multi-wavelength observations and advances in numerical hydrodynamical simulations. An additional section covers new research findings on feedback and self-regulatory mechanisms during cosmic structure formation in general and in galaxy formation in particular.
