Book excerpt: The inverse scattering problem is central to many areas of science and technology such as radar, sonar, medical imaging, geophysical exploration and nondestructive testing. This book is devoted to the mathematical and numerical analysis of the inverse scattering problem for acoustic and electromagnetic waves. In this fourth edition, a number of significant additions have been made including a new chapter on transmission eigenvalues and a new section on the impedance boundary condition where particular attention has been made to the generalized impedance boundary condition and to nonlocal impedance boundary conditions. Brief discussions on the generalized linear sampling method, the method of recursive linearization, anisotropic media and the use of target signatures in inverse scattering theory have also been added.

Book excerpt: It has now been almost ten years since our first book on scattering theory ap peared [32]. At that time we claimed that "in recent years the development of integral equation methods for the direct scattering problem seems to be nearing completion, whereas the use of such an approach to study the inverse scattering problem has progressed to an extent that a 'state of the art' survey appears highly desirable". Since we wrote these words, the inverse scattering problem for acoustic and electromagnetic waves has grown from being a few theoreti cal considerations with limited numerical implementations to a weH developed mathematical theory with tested numerical algorithms. This maturing of the field of inverse scattering theory has been based on the realization that such problems are in general not only nonlinear but also improperly posed in the sense that the solution does not depend continuously on the measured data. This was emphasized in [32] and treated with the ideas and tools available at that time. Now, almost ten years later, these initial ideas have developed to the extent that a monograph summarizing the mathematical basis of the field seems appropriate. This book is oUf attempt to write such a monograph. The inverse scattering problem for acoustic and electromagnetic waves can broadly be divided into two classes, the inverse obstacle problem and the inverse medium problem.

Book excerpt: This research project was concerned with the problem of determining the physical and geometric properties of an obstacle by probing with time harmonic acoustic or electromagnetic waves. A new method has been developed to solve problems of this type based on the theory of Herglotz wave functions and complete sets of solutions to the Helmholtz and Maxwell equations. Numerical examples have been given for the case of acoustic waves.

The main accomplishments were (1) the introduction of modified far field operators to eliminate unwanted eigenvalues in the dual space method for solving the inverse problem, (2) the numerical analysis of a combined finite element-boundary element method for solving the direct scattering problem, (3) an analysis of the spectral properties of the far field operator and the physical meaning of the distribution of eigenvalues, and (4) the adaptation of the dual space method to the problem of the detection and monitoring of leukemia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the latest developments on the numerical methods for inverse scattering problems associated with acoustic, electromagnetic, and elastic waves. Inverse scattering problems are concerned with identifying unknown or inaccessible objects by wave probing data, which makes possible many industrial and engineering applications including radar and sonar, medical imaging, nondestructive testing, remote sensing, and geophysical exploration. The mathematical study of inverse scattering problems is an active field of research. This book presents a comprehensive and unified mathematical treatment of various inverse scattering problems mainly from a numerical reconstruction perspective. It highlights the collaborative research outputs by the two groups of the authors yet surveys and reviews many existing results by global researchers in the literature. The book consists of three parts respectively corresponding to the studies on acoustic, electromagnetic, and elastic scattering problems. In each part, the authors start with in-depth theoretical and computational treatments of the forward scattering problems and then discuss various numerical reconstruction schemes for the associated inverse scattering problems in different scenarios of practical interest. In addition, the authors provide an overview of the existing results in the literature by other researchers. This book can serve as a handy reference for researchers or practitioners who are working on or implementing inverse scattering methods. It can also serve as a graduate textbook for research students who are interested in working on numerical algorithms for inverse scattering problems.

Book excerpt: This classic book provides a rigorous treatment of the Riesz?Fredholm theory of compact operators in dual systems, followed by a derivation of the jump relations and mapping properties of scalar and vector potentials in spaces of continuous and H?lder continuous functions. These results are then used to study scattering problems for the Helmholtz and Maxwell equations. Readers will benefit from a full discussion of the mapping properties of scalar and vector potentials in spaces of continuous and H?lder continuous functions, an in-depth treatment of the use of boundary integral equations to solve scattering problems for acoustic and electromagnetic waves, and an introduction to inverse scattering theory with an emphasis on the ill-posedness and nonlinearity of the inverse scattering problem.

Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date presentation of a broad range of contemporary problems in inverse scattering involving acoustic, elastic and electromagnetic waves. Descriptions will be given of traditional (but still in use and subject to on-going improvements) and more recent methods for identifying either: a) the homogenized material parameters of (spatially) unbounded or bounded heterogeneous media, or b) the detailed composition (spatial distribution of the material parameters) of unbounded or bounded heterogeneous media, or c) the location, shape, orientation and material characteristics of an object embedded in a wellcharacterized homogeneous, homogenized or heterogeneous unbounded or bounded medium, by inversion of reflected, transmitted or scattered spatiotemporal recorded waveforms resulting from the propagation of probe radiation within the medium.

Colton and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During this period, the single investigator investigated two topics. On the inverse scattering problem he wrote 1 book, 8 research papers and 7 survey papers. On the inverse Stefan problem he wrote 3 research papers and 1 survey paper. The papers on inverse scattering derive and numerically implement new, stable methods for solution, obtain a variety of uniqueness theorems and investigate the class of far field patterns associated with the scattering of planes waves by a bounded obstacle. (The set of far field patterns is in general not dense in the space of square integrable functions defined on the unit sphere when the wave number is an eigenvalue of the interior problem. This suggests new methods of solution currently being investigated.) The papers on the inverse Stefan problem derive and numerically implement new methods for solution in two space variables, prove in a new way the strong maximum principle for the heat equation and obtain expansion theorems for analytic solutions for the heat equation.

Book excerpt: The linear sampling method is the oldest and most developed of the qualitative methods in inverse scattering theory. It is based on solving a linear integral equation and then using the equation's solution as an indicator function for the determination of the support of the scattering object. This book describes the linear sampling method for a variety of electromagnetic scattering problems. It presents uniqueness theorems and the derivation of various inequalities on the material properties of the scattering object from a knowledge of the far field pattern of the scattered wave.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this text is to present the theory and mathematics of inverse scattering, in a simple way, to the many researchers and professionals who use it in their everyday research. While applications range across a broad spectrum of disciplines, examples in this text will focus primarly, but not exclusively, on acoustics. The text will be especially valuable for those applied workers who would like to delve more deeply into the fundamentally mathematical character of the subject matter.Practitioners in this field comprise applied physicists, engineers, and technologists, whereas the theory is almost entirely in the domain of abstract mathematics. This gulf between the two, if bridged, can only lead to improvement in the level of scholarship in this highly important discipline. This is the book's primary focus.
