Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formulation and solution of inverse problems for the estimation of parameters which describe damping and other dynamic properties in distributed models for the vibration of flexible structures is considered. Motivated by a slewing beam experiment, the identification of a nonlinear velocity dependent term which models air drag damping in the Euler-Bernoulli equation is investigated. Galerkin techniques are used to generate finite dimensional approximations. Convergence estimates and numerical results are given. The modeling of, and related inverse problems for the dynamics of high pressure hose line feeding a gas thruster actuator at the tip of a cantilevered beam are then considered. Approximation and convergence are discussed and numerical results involving experimental data are presented.

Book Synopsis A Unified Framework for Approximation in Inverse Problems for Distributed Parameter Systems by : H. T. Banks
Download or read book A Unified Framework for Approximation in Inverse Problems for Distributed Parameter Systems written by H. T. Banks and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical framework can be used to treat approximation techniques for very general classes of parameter estimation problems involving distributed systems that are either first or second order in time. Using the approach developed, one can obtain both convergence and stability (continuous dependence of parameter estimates with respect to the observations) under very weak regularity and compactness assumptions on the set of admissible parameters. This unified theory can be used for many problems found in the recent literature and in many cases offers significant improvements to existing results. Keywords: Approximation; Parameter estimation; Partial differential equations.

Book Synopsis Applied Calculus of Variations for Engineers, Third edition by : Louis Komzsik
Download or read book Applied Calculus of Variations for Engineers, Third edition written by Louis Komzsik and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculus of variations has a long history. Its fundamentals were laid down by icons of mathematics like Euler and Lagrange. It was once heralded as the panacea for all engineering optimization problems by suggesting that all one needed to do was to state a variational problem, apply the appropriate Euler-Lagrange equation and solve the resulting differential equation. This, as most all encompassing solutions, turned out to be not always true and the resulting differential equations are not necessarily easy to solve. On the other hand, many of the differential equations commonly used in various fields of engineering are derived from a variational problem. Hence it is an extremely important topic justifying the new edition of this book. This third edition extends the focus of the book to academia and supports both variational calculus and mathematical modeling classes. The newly added sections, extended explanations, numerous examples and exercises aid the students in learning, the professors in teaching, and the engineers in applying variational concepts.
