Book excerpt: The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) free electron laser employs an RF photocathode gun that yields a 1nC bunch a few picoseconds long, which must be further compressed to yield the high current required for Self Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) gain. The electron beam from the RF photocathode gun is quite sensitive to microbunching instabilities such as coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) in the compressor chicanes and longitudinal space charge (LSC) in the linac. These effects can be Landau damped by adding energy spread to the electron bunch prior to compression. They propose to do this by co-propagating an infrared laser beam with the electron bunch in an undulator in the LCLS injector beamline. The undulator is placed in a four bend magnet chicane to allow the Ir laser beam to propagate colinearly with the e-beam while it oscillates in the undulator. The IR laser beam is derived from the photocathode gun drive laser, so the two beams are synchronized. Simulations presented elsewhere in these proceedings show that the laser interaction damps the microbunching instabilities to a very great extent. This paper is a description of the design of the laser heater.

Book excerpt: The very bright electron beam required for an x-ray free-electron laser (FEL), such as the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), is susceptible to a microbunching instability in the magnetic bunch compressors, prior to the FEL undulator. The uncorrelated electron energy spread in the LCLS can be increased by an order of magnitude to provide strong Landau damping against the instability without degrading the FEL performance. To this end, a 'laser-heater' system has been installed in the LCLS injector, which modulates the energy of a 135-MeV electron bunch with an IR laser beam in a short undulator, enclosed within a four-dipole chicane. In this paper, we report detailed measurements of laser heater-induced energy spread, including the unexpected self-heating phenomenon when the laser energy is very low. We discuss the suppression of the microbunching instability with the laser heater and its impact on the x-ray FEL performance. We also present the analysis of these experimental results and develop a three-dimensional longitudinal space charge model to explain the self-heating effect.

Book excerpt: The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a SASE free electron laser using the last 1/3 of the SLAC two mile linac to produce 1.5 to 15 angstrom x-rays in a 100 meter long undulator for use in a variety of x-ray science experiments. In order to satisfy the demanding electron beam requirements, a new 135 MeV photo-injector will be built in an existing, off-axis vault at the 2/3 point of the main linac. The injector accelerator consists of a BNL/SLAC/UCLA 1.6 cell S-band gun followed by two 3-meter long SLAC accelerator sections. The 6MeV beam from the gun is matched into the first accelerator section and accelerated to 135 MeV before injection onto the main linac axis with a 35 degree bend. Several modifications to the rf gun, linac and beamline as well as the inclusion of several diagnostics have been incorporated into the injector design to achieve the required 1.2 micron projected emittance at a charge of 1 nC. In addition, an inverse free electron laser, the laser heater, will be used to increase the uncorrelated energy spread to suppress coherent synchrotron radiation and longitudinal space charge instabilities in the main accelerator and bunch compressors. The configuration and function of the major injector components will be described.

Book excerpt: Experimental and numerical studies of the Inverse Free Electron Laser using a GW-level 10.6[mu]m CO[sub 2] laser have been carried out at Brookhaven's Accelerator Test Facility. An energy gain of 2.5% ([Delta]E/E) on a 40 MeV electron beam has been observed E which compares well with theory. The effects on IFEL acceleration with respect to the variation of the laser electric field, the input electron beam energy, and the wiggler magnetic field strength were studied, and show the importance of matching the resonance condition in the IFEL. The numerical simulations were performed under various conditions and the importance of the electron bunching in the IFEL is shown. The numerical interpretation of our IFEL experimental results was examined. Although good numerical agreement with the experimental results was obtained, there is a discrepancy between the level of the laser power measured in the experiment and used in the simulation, possibly due to the non-Gaussian profile of the input high power laser beam. The electron energy distribution was studied numerically and a smoothing of the energy spectrum by the space charge effect at the location of the spectrometer was found, compared with the spectrum at the exit of the wiggler. The electron bunching by the IFEL and the possibility of using the IFEL as an electron prebuncher for another laser-driven accelerator were studied numerically. We found that bunching of the electrons at 1 meter downstream from the wiggler can be achieved using the existing facility. The simulation shows that there is a fundamental difference between the operating conditions for using the IFEL as a high gradient accelerator, and as a prebuncher for another accelerator.

The electrons interact with a 1--2 GW CO[sub 2] laser beam bounded by a 2.8 mm ID sapphire circular waveguide in the presence of a tapered wiggler with Bmax[approx] 1 T and a period 2.89 cm[le][lambda][sub w][le] 3.14 cm. The experimental results of[Delta]E/E as a function of electron energy E, peak magnetic field Bw and laser power W[sub 1] compare well with analytical and 1-D numerical simulations and permit scaling to higher laser power and electron energy.
