The general context considered here is that a seller replenishes its inventory in fixed intervals and, between replenishments, allocates the limited inventory to satisfy customers who are both price and delivery-time sensitive. On the demand side, customers have heterogeneous delivery-time requirements and choose either spot or late delivery. This theoretical modeling captures the essence of real-world business practices such as the delivery time market segmentation strategy adopted by automobile dealerships in China and many other similar examples. The book focuses on the seller’s optimal inventory replenishment and demand fulfillment policies, and our results provide managerial insights into the merits of flexible delivery-time options. Similar applications such as the group-buying mechanism are also examined. The main mathematical tool used in theoretical analysis is dynamic programming. This book is written for students, researchers, and practitioners in the areas of operations management and industrial engineering who are interested in understanding the rationale of flexible delivery times and designing successful applications.

Book excerpt: A supplier provides several lead-time options to its customers in a periodic review inventory system. The replenishment lead time is a multiple of the inventory review cycle. Customers are classified into two groups: short lead-time customers requiring the product immediately and long lead-time customers to whom the supplier may deliver immediately or in the next cycle. We consider an inventory-commitment problem, in which the supplier allocates its on-hand inventory to these two groups of customers. When inventory runs out, the supplier backlogs orders to future cycles. Therefore, the supplier faces two problems: how the on-hand inventories are allocated between the two classes of customers and how the backlogged orders are cleared when replenishments arrive? We treat the former as an inventory-commitment problem and handle the latter with priority rules. We solve the former by dynamic programming and use three priority rules in clearing backlogs. We also explore the optimal inventory replenishment issue and evaluate the performance of each priority rule.

Book excerpt: This paper considers a multiperiod inventory model in which a supplier provides alternative lead-time choices to customers: a short or a long lead time. The supplier operates in a batch-production mode. Orders from slow customers can be taken by the supplier and included in the next production cycle, while orders from fast customers have to be satisfied from the onhand inventory. We denote the action of providing a short lead-time product to a long lead-time customer as the inventory-commitment decision, and we also denote the initial inventory stocking as the inventory-replenishment decision. We first characterize the optimal inventory-commitment policy. We then prove that the optimal inventory-replenishment policy is a base-stock type. We extend our analysis to models to consider a multicycle setting, a case of a supply capacity constraint, and a case in which the inventory holding cost is charged in real time. We also compare the performances of the optimal inventory-commitment policy and the inventory-rationing policy. Finally, we use the customer-choice model to characterize the demand-induction and demand-cannibalization effects.
