Book Synopsis Health Technology Assessment and Health Policy Today: A Multifaceted View of their Unstable Crossroads by : Juan E. del Llano-Señarís
Download or read book Health Technology Assessment and Health Policy Today: A Multifaceted View of their Unstable Crossroads written by Juan E. del Llano-Señarís and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book disentangles the issues in connection with the advancement of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and its interface with health policy. It highlights the factors that should shape its progress in the near future. Interdisciplinary and critical views from a number of professionals are put together in a prescient order to cast some light and make recommendations as to the next steps HTA should take to be fit for purpose. A wealth of documents dealing with HTA have been published over the last three decades. HTA allegedly is one of the bedrocks of regulation and medical decision making. However, counter vailing visions contend that geographical variations in the role that HTA is actually playing within countries pinpoints specific room for improvement. Given our social preferences, cherry-picking HTA’s features and successes over the last decades moves it away from its possibility frontier. Some of the most noteworthy hindrances that HTA faces, in several countries, to making headway towards its consolidation as an efficient tool for regulation and decision making are as follows: insufficient resources, delays in assessment, inadequate priority setting, regulatory capture, public distrust, actual influence on regulatory decisions, the need for strengthening international cooperation and harmony, the lack of sound and consistent assessments of diagnostic tests, medical devices and surgical innovations and limited dissemination. Time has come for HTA to take a renewed stand. There is a pressing need to submit HTA to in-depth critical scrutiny.

This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There continues to be much interest in the business and academic communities in the concept of strategic competencies or core capabilities, in other words, how organisations define and differentiate themselves. More recently, this field has fragmented into a number of related disciplines with subtle differences in focus:Knowledge management — how organisations identify, share and exploit their internal competencies, in particular the knowledge of individuals.Organisational learning — the relationship between individual and organisational knowledge and how organisations ‘unlearn’ past competencies and acquire new competencies.Strategic management — how competencies can be assessed, and how these contribute to performance.Innovation management — how such competencies are translated into new processes, products and services. This book aims to integrate strategic and knowledge management approaches to capability building with the development of competencies by bringing together the latest research and practices from international experts in the field. This third edition has been fully updated with five new chapters./a

Book Synopsis Knowing New Biotechnologies by : Matthias Wienroth
Download or read book Knowing New Biotechnologies written by Matthias Wienroth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The areas of personal genomics and citizen science draw on – and bring together – different cultures of producing and managing knowledge and meaning. They also cross local and global boundaries, are subjects and objects of transformation and mobility of research practices, evaluation and multi-stakeholder groups. Thirdly, they draw on logics of ‘convergence’: new links between, and new kinds of, stakeholders, spaces, knowledge, practices, challenges and opportunities. This themed collection of essays from nationally and internationally leading scholars and commentators advances and widens current debates in Science and Technology Studies and in Science Policy concerning ‘converging technologies’ by complementing the customary focus on technical aspirations for convergence with the analysis of the practices and logics of scientific, social and cultural knowledge production that constitute contemporary technoscience. In case studies from across the globe, contributors discuss the ways in which science and social order are linked in areas such as direct-to consumer genetic testing and do-it-yourself biotechnologies. Organised into thematic sections, ‘Knowing New Biotechnologies’ explores: • ways of understanding the dynamics and logics of convergences in emergent biotechnologies • governance and regulatory issues around technoscientific convergences • democratic aspects of converging technologies – lay involvement in scientific research and the co-production of biotechnology and social and cultural knowledge.

The study stresses the great uncertainties which still surround any inventive effort seeking a significant advance, and investigates how this uncertainty affects management practices in industrial-research laboratories. The general analysis is supported by a number of case studies.
