This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the strong appeal and wide use of this monograph, it is now available in its third revised edition. The monograph gives a systematic treatment of 3-dimensional topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) based on the work of the author with N. Reshetikhin and O. Viro. This subject was inspired by the discovery of the Jones polynomial of knots and the Witten-Chern-Simons field theory. On the algebraic side, the study of 3-dimensional TQFTs has been influenced by the theory of braided categories and the theory of quantum groups. The book is divided into three parts. Part I presents a construction of 3-dimensional TQFTs and 2-dimensional modular functors from so-called modular categories. This gives a vast class of knot invariants and 3-manifold invariants as well as a class of linear representations of the mapping class groups of surfaces. In Part II the technique of 6j-symbols is used to define state sum invariants of 3-manifolds. Their relation to the TQFTs constructed in Part I is established via the theory of shadows. Part III provides constructions of modular categories, based on quantum groups and skein modules of tangles in the 3-space.This fundamental contribution to topological quantum field theory is accessible to graduate students in mathematics and physics with knowledge of basic algebra and topology. It is an indispensable source for everyone who wishes to enter the forefront of this fascinating area at the borderline of mathematics and physics. Book Synopsis Introductory Lectures on Knot Theory by : Louis H. Kauffman
Download or read book Introductory Lectures on Knot Theory written by Louis H. Kauffman and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More recently, Khovanov introduced link homology as a generalization of the Jones polynomial to homology of chain complexes and Ozsvath and Szabo developed Heegaard-Floer homology, that lifts the Alexander polynomial. These two significantly different theories are closely related and the dependencies are the object of intensive study. These ideas mark the beginning of a new era in knot theory that includes relationships with four-dimensional problems and the creation of new forms of algebraic topology relevant to knot theory. The theory of skein modules is an older development also having its roots in Jones discovery. Another significant and related development is the theory of virtual knots originated independently by Kauffman and by Goussarov Polyak and Viro in the '90s. All these topics and their relationships are the subject of the survey papers in this book.

Book Synopsis Primes and Knots by : Toshitake Kohno
Download or read book Primes and Knots written by Toshitake Kohno and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals systematically with connections between algebraic number theory and low-dimensional topology. Of particular note are various inspiring interactions between number theory and low-dimensional topology discussed in most papers in this volume. For example, quite interesting are the use of arithmetic methods in knot theory and the use of topological methods in Galois theory. Also, expository papers in both number theory and topology included in the volume can help a wide group of readers to understand both fields as well as the interesting analogies and relations that bring them together.
Book Synopsis Canonical Wick Rotations in 3-Dimensional Gravity by : R. Benedetti
Download or read book Canonical Wick Rotations in 3-Dimensional Gravity written by R. Benedetti and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009-03-06 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors develop a canonical Wick rotation-rescaling theory in $3$-dimensional gravity. This includes (a) A simultaneous classification: this shows how maximal globally hyperbolic spacetimes of arbitrary constant curvature, which admit a complete Cauchy surface and canonical cosmological time, as well as complex projective structures on arbitrary surfaces, are all different materializations of ``more fundamental'' encoding structures. (b) Canonical geometric correlations: this shows how spacetimes of different curvature, that share a same encoding structure, are related to each other by canonical rescalings, and how they can be transformed by canonical Wick rotations in hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, that carry the appropriate asymptotic projective structure. Both Wick rotations and rescalings act along the canonical cosmological time and have universal rescaling functions. These correlations are functorial with respect to isomorphisms of the respective geometric categories.

This collection presents a rich blend of geometry and topology, with some theoretical physics thrown in as well, and so provides a snapshot of a vibrant and fast-moving field. Graduate students with basic preparation in topology and geometry can use this volume to learn advanced background material before being brought to the frontiers of current developments. Seasoned researchers will also benefit from the systematic presentation of exciting new advances by leaders in their fields.
Book Synopsis Combinatorial properties of ladders, generalised Pont-Neuf and caterpillar diagrams in the space of coloured open Jacobi diagrams by : Frank Ditsche
Download or read book Combinatorial properties of ladders, generalised Pont-Neuf and caterpillar diagrams in the space of coloured open Jacobi diagrams written by Frank Ditsche and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This doctoral thesis is a contribution to the analysis of the combinatorics of arbitrarily coloured open Jacobi diagrams and their relationship to Vassiliev invariants. We examine J. Kneissler's five ladder relations and state them in a much more precise way. We also analyse their role in the space of colored open Jacobi diagrams. Then, we establish a sort of machinery - a language together with a toolbox of lemmata, theorems and definitions to build, manipulate and analyse coloured open Jacobi diagrams. With this, we examine the role of generalised Pont-Neuf diagrams and caterpillar diagrams. Lastly we transfer this to the uncolored case, which allows us to show that the space of open Jacobi diagrams up to first Betti number five is already contained in the module of caterpillar diagrams, considered as a module of a certain subset of Vogels' algebra. This means that Vassiliev invariants associated to these degrees do not detect knot orientation.
Book Synopsis Chern-Simons Gauge Theory: 20 Years After by : Jørgen E. Andersen
Download or read book Chern-Simons Gauge Theory: 20 Years After written by Jørgen E. Andersen and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989, Edward Witten discovered a deep relationship between quantum field theory and knot theory, and this beautiful discovery created a new field of research called Chern-Simons theory. This field has the remarkable feature of intertwining a large number of diverse branches of research in mathematics and physics, among them low-dimensional topology, differential geometry, quantum algebra, functional and stochastic analysis, quantum gravity, and string theory. The 20-year anniversary of Witten's discovery provided an opportunity to bring together researchers working in Chern-Simons theory for a meeting, and the resulting conference, which took place during the summer of 2009 at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, included many of the leading experts in the field. This volume documents the activities of the conference and presents several original research articles, including another monumental paper by Witten that is sure to stimulate further activity in this and related fields. This collection will provide an excellent overview of the current research directions and recent progress in Chern-Simons gauge theory.
Book Synopsis Quandles and Topological Pairs by : Takefumi Nosaka
Download or read book Quandles and Topological Pairs written by Takefumi Nosaka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys quandle theory, starting from basic motivations and going on to introduce recent developments of quandles with topological applications and related topics. The book is written from topological aspects, but it illustrates how esteemed quandle theory is in mathematics, and it constitutes a crash course for studying quandles.More precisely, this work emphasizes the fresh perspective that quandle theory can be useful for the study of low-dimensional topology (e.g., knot theory) and relative objects with symmetry. The direction of research is summarized as “We shall thoroughly (re)interpret the previous studies of relative symmetry in terms of the quandle”. The perspectives contained herein can be summarized by the following topics. The first is on relative objects G/H, where G and H are groups, e.g., polyhedrons, reflection, and symmetric spaces. Next, central extensions of groups are discussed, e.g., spin structures, K2 groups, and some geometric anomalies. The third topic is a method to study relative information on a 3-dimensional manifold with a boundary, e.g., knot theory, relative cup products, and relative group cohomology. For applications in topology, it is shown that from the perspective that some existing results in topology can be recovered from some quandles, a method is provided to diagrammatically compute some “relative homology”. (Such classes since have been considered to be uncomputable and speculative). Furthermore, the book provides a perspective that unifies some previous studies of quandles. The former part of the book explains motivations for studying quandles and discusses basic properties of quandles. The latter focuses on low-dimensional topology or knot theory. Finally, problems and possibilities for future developments of quandle theory are posed.
Book Synopsis An Invitation to Knot Theory by : Heather A. Dye
Download or read book An Invitation to Knot Theory written by Heather A. Dye and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Only Undergraduate Textbook to Teach Both Classical and Virtual Knot Theory An Invitation to Knot Theory: Virtual and Classical gives advanced undergraduate students a gentle introduction to the field of virtual knot theory and mathematical research. It provides the foundation for students to research knot theory and read journal articles on their own. Each chapter includes numerous examples, problems, projects, and suggested readings from research papers. The proofs are written as simply as possible using combinatorial approaches, equivalence classes, and linear algebra. The text begins with an introduction to virtual knots and counted invariants. It then covers the normalized f-polynomial (Jones polynomial) and other skein invariants before discussing algebraic invariants, such as the quandle and biquandle. The book concludes with two applications of virtual knots: textiles and quantum computation.

Book Synopsis Interactions Between Hyperbolic Geometry, Quantum Topology and Number Theory by : Abhijit Champanerkar
Download or read book Interactions Between Hyperbolic Geometry, Quantum Topology and Number Theory written by Abhijit Champanerkar and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on a 10-day workshop given by leading experts in hyperbolic geometry, quantum topology and number theory, in June 2009 at Columbia University. Each speaker gave a minicourse consisting of three or four lectures aimed at graduate students and recent PhDs. The proceedings of this enormously successful workshop can serve as an introduction to this active research area in a way that is expository and broadly accessible to graduate students. Although many ideas overlap, the twelve expository/research papers in this volume can be grouped into four rough categories: (1) different approaches to the Volume Conjecture, and relations between the main quantum and geometric invariants; (2) the geometry associated to triangulations of hyperbolic 3-manifolds; (3) arithmetic invariants of hyperbolic 3-manifolds; (4) quantum invariants associated to knots and hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The workshop, the conference that followed, and these proceedings continue a long tradition in quantum and geometric topology of bringing together ideas from diverse areas of mathematics and physics, and highlights the importance of collaborative research in tackling big problems that require expertise in disparate disciplines.

For mathematics, string theory has been a source of many significant inspirations, ranging from Seiberg-Witten theory in four-manifolds, to enumerative geometry and Gromov-Witten theory in algebraic geometry, to work on the Jones polynomial in knot theory, to recent progress in the geometric Langlands program and the development of derived algebraic geometry and n-category theory. In the other direction, mathematics has provided physicists with powerful tools, ranging from powerful differential geometric techniques for solving or analyzing key partial differential equations, to toric geometry, to K-theory and derived categories in D-branes, to the analysis of Calabi-Yau manifolds and string compactifications, to modular forms and other arithmetic techniques. Articles in this book address many of these topics.

Book Synopsis Tropical and Idempotent Mathematics by : Grigoriĭ Lazarevich Litvinov
Download or read book Tropical and Idempotent Mathematics written by Grigoriĭ Lazarevich Litvinov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of papers from the International Conference on Tropical and Idempotent Mathematics, held in Moscow, Russia in August 2007. This is a relatively new branch of mathematical sciences that has been rapidly developing and gaining popularity over the last decade. Tropical mathematics can be viewed as a result of the Maslov dequantization applied to 'traditional' mathematics over fields. Importantly, applications in econophysics and statistical mechanics lead to an explanation of the nature of financial crises. Another original application provides an analysis of instabilities in electrical power networks. Idempotent analysis, tropical algebra, and tropical geometry are the building blocks of the subject. Contributions to idempotent analysis are focused on the Hamilton-Jacobi semigroup, the max-plus finite element method, and on the representations of eigenfunctions of idempotent linear operators. Tropical algebras, consisting of plurisubharmonic functions and their germs, are examined. The volume also contains important surveys and research papers on tropical linear algebra and tropical convex geometry.
