Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A goal of image segmentation is to divide an image into regions corresponding to objects. Segmentation is important because it is a vital step in enabling a computer to understand the contents of an image. While grouping together pixels with homogenous properties such as colour and texture is useful for simple cases, applying standard approaches to segment more complex images containing objects with scaled and/or rotated textures has proved to be less effective. Examples of complex images include those containing zebras, flowers, spiral shells and checkerboard patterns. This thesis develops new scale and rotation invariant texture features for segmenting typical natural images and complex images. A new transform called the Double Dyadic Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (D3T-CWT) is modified from the Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (DT-CWT) to enable analysis of signals at and midway between dyadic scales. This transform facilitates production of two new scale and rotation invariant texture features: the first employing magnitude coefficients from the DFT while the approach chosen herein uses circular-correlation to generate the invariant features. The new invariant texture feature improves over standard features in segmenting general images and particularly those containing complex textures. A further improvement results from combining the new texture feature with a purposely designed colour histogram. The scale and rotation invariant texture feature has important applications outside of segmentation such as in query by example in content based image retrieval. A novel scale and rotation invariant texture descriptor for classifying regions is developed from modelling the distribution of invariant texture features in an image region. Improved retrieval accuracy from using the new approach suggests the suitability of the new descriptor in query by example.

Book excerpt: This Research Topic will focus on how the visual system recognizes objects regardless of variations in the viewpoint, illumination, retinal size, background, etc. Contributors are encouraged to submit articles describing novel results, models, viewpoints, perspectives and/or methodological innovations relevant to this topic. The issues we wish to cover include, but are not limited to, perceptual invariance under one or more of the following types of image variation: • Object shape • Task • Viewpoint (from the translation and rotation of the object relative to the viewer) • Illumination, shading, and shadows • Degree of occlusion • Retinal size • Color • Surface texture • Visual context, including background clutter and crowding • Object motion (including biological motion). Examples of questions that are particularly interesting in this context include, but are not limited to: • Empirical characterizations of properties of invariance: does invariance always exist? How wide is its range and how strong is the tolerance to viewing conditions within this range? • Invariance in naïve vs. experienced subjects: Is invariance built-in or learned? How can it be learned, under which conditions and how effectively? Is it learned incidentally, or are specific task and reward structures necessary for learning? How is generalizability and transfer of learning related to the generalizability/invariance of perception? • Invariance during inference: Are there conditions (e.g. fast presentation time or otherwise resource-constrained recognition) when invariance breaks? • What are some plausible computational or neural mechanisms by which invariance could be achieved?

The potential areas of application include biomedical image analysis, industrial inspection, analysis of satellite or aerial imagery, content-based retrieval from image databases, document analysis, biometric person authentication, scene analysis for robot navigation, texture synthesis for computer graphics and animation, and image coding. d104ure analysis has been a topic of intensive research for over three decades, but the progress has been very slow.A workshop on ?d104ure Analysis in Machine Vision? was held at the University of Oulu, Finland, in 1999, providing a forum for presenting recent research results and for discussing how to make progress in order to increase the usefulness of texture in practical applications. This book contains extended and revised versions of the papers presented at the workshop. The first part of the book deals with texture analysis methodology, while the second part covers various applications. The book gives a unique view of different approaches and applications of texture analysis. It should be of great interest both to researchers of machine vision and to practitioners in various application areas.

The scale-space concept was introduced by Iijima more than 40 years ago and became popular later on through the works of Witkin and Koenderink. It is at the junction of three major schools of thought in image processing and computer vision: the design of ?lters, axiomatic approaches based on partial di?erential equations (PDEs), and variational methods for image regularization. Scale-space ideas belong to the mathematically best-understood approaches in image analysis. They have entered numerous successful applications in medical imaging and a number of other ?elds where they often give results of very high quality. This conference followed biennial meetings held in Utrecht, Corfu, Vancouver and Skye. It took place in a little castle (Schl ̈ osschen Sch ̈ onburg) near the small town of Hofgeismar, Germany. Inspired by the very successful previous meeting at Skye, we kept the style of gathering people in a slightly remote and scenic place in order to encourage many fruitful discussions during the day and in the evening. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research propose a novel image segmentation algorithm, named as Transform Invariant Rank Cuts (TIRC). Based on salient 3D geometric information of natural scenes. The segmentation algorithm unities an emerging robust statistics technique called Robust PCA and its recent application in Transform Invariant Low-Rank Texture (TILT) extraction. This proposed novel algorithms address two critical issues that have handicapped the applications of the TILT feature. First, we propose a simple yet e cient algorithm to detect low-rank texture regions in natural images. Second, TIRC is a principled graph-cut solution to partition the TILT features into groups; each group represents a unique 3D planar structure. Using a TILT adjacency graph, the algorithm assigns a TILT feature as a node. Two nodes are connected if they are spatially adjacent, with the cut cost function defined as the total coding length of encoding the two texture regions as low-rank matrices separately. Finally, the classical graph-cut algorithm can be applied to partition the graph into sub-graphs, each of which represents a unique surface texture and 3D orientation. The efficacy and visual quality of this geometric image segmentation algorithm is demonstrated on a large urban scene database.

It involves factors as diverse as sensors, feature extraction, pattern classification, decision fusion, applications and others. The signals processed are commonly one, two or three dimensional, the processing is done in real- time or takes hours and days, some systems look for one narrow object class, others search huge databases for entries with at least a small amount of similarity. No single person can claim expertise across the whole field, which develops rapidly, updates its paradigms and comprehends several philosophical approaches. This book reflects this diversity by presenting a selection of recent developments within the area of pattern recognition and related fields. It covers theoretical advances in classification and feature extraction as well as application-oriented works. Authors of these 25 works present and advocate recent achievements of their research related to the field of pattern recognition.

Book excerpt: Knowledge of the three-dimensional world is essential for many guidance and navigation applications. A sequence of images from an electro-optical sensor can be processed using optical flow algorithms to provide a sparse set of ranges as a function of azimuth and elevation. A natural way to enhance the range map is by interpolation. However, this should be undertaken with care since interpolation assumes continuity of range. The range is continuous in certain parts of the image and can jump at object boundaries. In such situations, the ability to detect homogeneous object regions by scene segmentation can be used to determine regions in the range map that can be enhanced by interpolation. The use of scalar features derived from the spatial gray-level dependence matrix for texture segmentation is explored. Thresholding of histograms of scalar texture features is done for several images to select scalar features which result in a meaningful segmentation of the images. Next, the selected scalar features are used with a neural net to automate the segmentation procedure. Back-propagation is used to train the feed forward neural network. The generalization of the network approach to subsequent images in the sequence is examined. It is shown that the use of multiple scalar features as input to the neural network result in a superior segmentation when compared with a single scalar feature. It is also shown that the scalar features, which are not useful individually, result in a good segmentation when used together. The methodology is applied to both indoor and outdoor images. These pathophysiological alterations can disturb the organism's homeostasis leading ultimately to a condition of severe organ dysfunction which in itself means a bad prognosis for patient survival. In the last decades researchers and clinicians have been involved in process directed to a better understanding of the basic mechanisms of sepsis and MODS. The best goal will be the achievement of preventive measures and optimization of management in patients suffering severe infections and critical conditions. This objective represents a true challenge at the dawn of the XXI century.
