Joseph Ratzinger è nato nel 1927 a Marktl am Inn, un paesino della Baviera. Dopo gli studi teologici e l'ordinazione sacerdotale insegnò teologia nelle università di Monaco di Baviera, Bonn, Münster, Tübingen, Regensburg. Fu consigliere del cardinale Frings durante il concilio Vaticano II. Arcivescovo di Monaco di Baviera dal 1977, nel 1981 fu nominato prefetto della Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede. Numerose le sue pubblicazioni presso la San Paolo. Tra queste ricordiamo: Rapporto sulla fede (1985); Svolta per l'Europa? (1992); Il sale della terra (1997); La mia vita (1997).
