In the Linnaean classification system, animals are grouped into the classes of Mammalia, Amphibia, Insecta, Pisces, Aves and Vermes. Some of the major sub-disciplines of zoology are animal physiology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, behavioral ecology, etc. This textbook provides comprehensive insights into the field of zoology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Zoology: An Introduction to the Study of Animals for Secondary Schools and Academies This volume is not intended to add anything to the science of Zoology. It is not for the investigator, it is for the beginner. The author has found that laboratory guides are as a rule too dry and conventional to accomplish the best results and he has accordingly attempted to make these directions simple and suggestive as well as comprehensive. The plan of these studies was worked out in the Manual Training High School, Kansas City, Mo., where it was thoroughly tested with students of all grades of the high school. The book has also been tested in two Normal Schools and in several high schools and has been found to warrant the claims made for it. Information about animals comes to the child from three sources, viz.: from a study of the animal itself, from a study of the environment, from reference books and lectures by the teacher. This book emphasizes the first and second of these sources and it is expected that the teacher will see that the third is not neglected. The author has gleaned from so many sources that it would be impossible to acknowledge them all, but he desires to make special mention of the assistance of his associate, Mr. A. N. Young, on the Branch Vermes and on various other parts of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Endowed with abundant water, extraordinary ecoystems, varied climates and biomes, our planet is teeming with creatures, great and small. What produced this rich diversity? How have so many species formed, evolved and adapted? What effects are humans having on the rest of the animal kingdom and on the natural environment we share? 30-Second Zoology explains the diversification process of evolution, then introduces the main groups of invertebrates and vertebrates. Breathing, seeing, communicating and other key features of animal physiology and behaviour are explored, as are the ecological relationships between Earth’s myriad species – the predators, the prey, the parasites and the positively poisonous – before assessing the anthropogenic effects of pollution, over-harvesting and a changing climate. Covering everything from the origins of life and the most basic of organisms, all the way through to the more complex creatures that we recognise today, 30-Second Zoology aims to showcase the most fantastic examples of life on our earth, all in 300 words and one stunning illustration per topic.

Book excerpt: In revising this book I have tried to bring the theory of environment up to date in the light of certain important criticisms that have appeared since 1961, especially in papers by T. O. Browning and D. A. Maelzer, and in the light of experience gained while using the book as a text for an undergraduate course in population ecology in the University of Adelaide. As a consequence the order in which the argument is pre sented has been altered. Some new material has been introduced to expand the discussion of certain topics, especially resources, pathogens, aggressors and territorial behaviour. But the general approach to the subject and the general theory remains very much the same as in the first edition. I am grateful to Professor F. Fenner and Dr F. N. Ratcliffe and to Cambridge University Press for permission to reproduce Fig. 5.04; to Professor D. O. Chitty and the Ecological Society of Australia for permission to reproduce Fig. 5.05 (with minor modifications); Fig. 3.03 has been modified from a figure in a paper by H. G. Andrewartha and T. O. Browning first published in the Journal of Experimental Biology. Adelaide, 1970 H. G. A. xi Preface to the First Edition My interest in animal ecology was first aroused by reading Elton's Animal Ecology. His definition of the scope of ecology which I quote in section 1.0 is still the best that I have met.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Zoology This book has been written for the use of students taking the introductory course in Zoology in Universities and Colleges. It has been prepared especially for the zoological part of the work in General Biology at the University of Michigan, and is expected to supplement the one lecture and four hours of laboratory work per week during the first half year. No textbook now on the market covers the field of the introductory course in Zoology as it is given at several of the leading Universities. These courses deal with invertebrate types only, being followed by a course on vertebrate types during the second half year. Only a few animals belonging to the more important phyla, as viewed from an evolutionary standpoint, are considered. They are, however, intensively studied in an endeavor to teach the fundamental principles of Zoology in a way that is not possible when a superficial examination of types from all the phyla is made. Furthermore, morphology is not specially emphasized, but is coordinated with physiology, ecology, and behavior, and serves to illustrate by a comparative study the probable course of evolution. The animals are not treated as inert objects for dissection, but as living organisms whose activities are of fundamental importance. No arguments, I believe, are necessary to justify this method of procedure, since the so-called "the course," developed with the problems of organic evolution in mind, and dealing with dynamic as well as static phenomena, is recognized by most teachers at the present time as the best method of introducing young students to Zoology. Book excerpt: “Packed with facts and photos, Zoology for Kids is a vibrant introduction to zoology that also provides inspiration for career options and activities to help children further explore and apply what they have learned.” —Liesl Pimentel, manager of education and formal programs, Phoenix Zoo Zoology for Kids invites young animal lovers to discover the animal kingdom through clear, entertaining information and anecdotes and hands-on activities. Part 1 introduces the science of zoology, discussing animals’ forms, functions, and behaviors as well as the history behind zoos and aquariums. Kids bake edible animal cells, play a dolphin-echolocation game, and design an exhibit. Part 2 offers an insider’s look at how zoologists apply their knowledge every day. Kids peek into the world of zookeepers and aquarists, veterinarians, wildlife researchers, and conservationists. They “train” their friends, mold a tiger’s jawbone, and perform field research in their own backyard. Animal enthusiasts come away with new knowledge, a healthy respect for the animal kingdom, and the idea that they can pursue animal-related careers and make a difference to preserve and protect the natural world. Josh Hestermann is a marine-mammal keeper and trainer at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois. Bethanie Hestermann is a freelance writer and contributing writer and editor at large at Connected World magazine. They live in Brookfield, Illinois. Martin and Chris Kratt, the Kratt Brothers, are the creators and cohosts of the PBS Kids series Wild Kratts, Kratts Creatures, and Zoboomafoo.
