Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Manual of Geography: Designed for Junior Classes in Public and Private Schools The National Geographical Series heretofore consisted of three grades of text-books, viz.: First Lessons in Geography, the Manual, and McNally's System of Geography. After two years of the most gratifying success of the Manual, it was deemed advisable to introduce large and newly engraved maps and illustrations, together with many important additions to the Map Exercises;, the whole resulting in a work larger, more advanced, and, consequently, more expensive, than the book in its original form. Hence, the space between the First Lessons and the Manual was increased to such an extent as to warrant the use of an intermediate work, as an Introduction to the Manual. This book, while it possesses an advantage in an economical point of view, renders an easier gradation from the First Lessons to the Manual; thus affording greater facility and satisfaction to both teacher and pupil. To render the grades still easier, and the series more comprehensive, a Physical and Intermediate Geography has been recently published. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of the region has been a central concept in theunderstanding of the natural environment, of human society andculture, and of their interactions, from the ancient Greeks to thepresent. In this book Paul Claval provides a critical introductionto the ways in which the concept of the region has been, is, andcould be used to make sense of spatial organization and arealvariation in human activities. He examines both economic and policyissues, and relates these to culture, regional identity andecology. The book is divided into three parts. Part I provides a conciseaccount of regional studies from the ancient Greeks to the present. It then outlines the main current issues in regional geography.Part II describes the main perspectives on the division of space, the different kinds and typologies of regions, and contrastingmodes of regional representation. Paul Claval also examines herehow ecological, economic, social, cultural, and political phenomenacan be understood through their areal variations. Part III looks athow states and non-state societies organize themselves regionallyand of the evolution in contemporary dynamics of such modes oforganization. The author shows how the perception, representation, imposition and claiming of regions changes from non-statesocieties, through traditional to industrial societies, andconsiders the merging of territorial borders of a globalized worldeconomy. This is a complete and penetrating survey of the regional conceptas a key to the geographical imagination. Written by France's mostprominent geographer, it draws equally on Anglo-Americanintellectual traditions, and is illustrated by a wide range ofexamples drawn from all over the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Geography and Language Although, with most children, much Geographical work may be done earlier, it is thought safer to recommend its formal introduction with the first of the fourth year. It is presumed, however, that all Geographic knowledge required for a proper understanding of - the reading prescribed for the earlier grades, will have received careful attention. This, with us, will include, in the second grade, Stories of the United States, and Big and Little People of Other Lands; in the third grade, Great Americans for Little Americans, Stories of Colonial Children, Seven Little Sisters, and Each and All. The last two are especially used for their Geographical value. To this add the work outlined under Home Geography in this book and it may be safely assumed that pupils will be quite familiar with the meaning and use of globes and maps. This, of course, means not only the finished globe, but also the slated globe which, properly used, has in its use the highest degree of helpfulness. The wall maps, with all the lower grades, should always be hung on the north wall to insure less confusion as to direction. For this reason it is well, some times, to lay the map on the floor and let the children gather round it. They must be led to see that north is not always up and that south is not always down. Let no place of any significance in any lesson be passed without being definitely located both on the map, or globe, and actually in direction and comparative distance from the school room. From what is stated above, it will be seen that third year children will need to understand maps and this envolves, not only relative position, but actual distances; hence, they should learn the meaning of the scale of a map. For this purpose, take some object as the title page of a book, small enough to be outlined in its true measurement, placing all important objects or characters on the outline in proper position, not by guess but by careful measurement. When this is understood, take some object, as the schoolroom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
