Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest inventories throughout the world have evolved gradually over time. The content as well as the concepts and de?nitions employed are constantly adapted to the users’ needs. Advanced inventory systems have been established in many countries within Europe, as well as outside Europe, as a result of development work spanning several decades, in some cases more than 100 years. With continuously increasing international agreements and commitments, the need for information has also grown drastically, and reporting requests have become more frequent and the content of the reports wider. Some of the agreements made at the international level have direct impacts on national economies and international decisions, e. g. , the Kyoto Protocol. Thus it is of utmost importance that the forest information supplied is collected and analysed using sound scienti?c principles and that the information from different countries is comparable. European National Forest Inventory (NFI) teams gathered in Vienna in 2003 to discuss the new challenges and the measures needed to get data users to take full advantage of existing NFIs. As a result, the European National Forest Inventory Network (ENFIN), a network of NFIs, was established. The ENFIN members decided to apply for funding for meetings and collaborative activities. COST– European Cooperation in Science and Technology - provided the necessary ?n- cial means for the realization of the program.

Book excerpt: This is the 2nd edition of the book, Flow Visualization: Techniques and Examples, which was published by Imperial College Press in 2000. Many of the chapters have been revised and updated to take into consideration recent changes in a number of flow visualization and measurement techniques, including an updated high quality flow gallery. Unique among similar publications, this book focuses on the practical rather than theoretical aspects. Obtaining high quality flow visualization results is, in many ways, more of an art than a science, and experience plays a key deciding role. The depth and breadth of the material will make this book invaluable to readers of all levels of experience in the field.

Book excerpt: In 2014, the Australian Government was investing into creativity and innovation as part of a growth strategy. Critical & creative thinking ranked 4th in the Australian Curriculum after Literacy, Numeracy and ICT, across all subjects. In the Arts, it made explicit references to how to achieve this with the use of visual journals. In a way, this represented a sea change in the way creativity was being taught. But by what means? Where would teachers get practical help to make this happen? The Visual Diary Guides provide just this kind of help. Produced by an artist-teacher, in two integrated parts they address both students and teachers while aligning with the Australian Curriculum. They begin by identifying 'inspiration' as the fuel for the creative activity. But it is hard to store inspiration for later use. And even harder to make it fun!The books argue that the 'storage' is that ordinary art journal, the Visual Diary, which in the present classroom setting is often wasted as a portfolio. Its explosive creative potential is there to be unlocked. The books set out to do that in the classroom. Contrary to common belief, a structured approach with limits and boundaries is required for creativity to truly flourish. The Visual Diary becomes a students' personal treasure-trove much like an ordinary diary. The main premise of these books is that everyone has an artist in them and a trustworthy guide is needed to locate it.The Visual Diary Guide - Student Work book is written for students in accessible language. Through more than 40 specially designed activities, students find and capture inspiration and ideas that personally resonate for them. It opens the door for students to explore the visual culture they are immersed in, making it accessible in the art room for refinement, analysis and development as a supplement to the art room program.

Book excerpt: In 1934, a brilliant young scientist, Walter Kempner (1903-1997), was brought as a refugee from Nazi Germany to join the faculty of Duke Hospital's department of medicine. The first AMA presentation, in 1944, of his unconventional research in the origins and treatment of metabolic diseases provoked wide attention and considerable controversy, but the results of his strict diet regimen were undeniable. Patients flocking to Durham for the famous Rice Diet found their diabetes, kidney and cardiovascular diseases--once considered fatal--cured or greatly improved. The headline-grabbing success of Dr. Kempner's diet contributed significantly over the years to Durham's economic growth and Duke's transformation into a world-famous center for medical research and care. From his arrival at Duke, Kempner worked to help friends get out of Germany. For several who had been scholars in pre-war Germany he found positions here. They and a few others associated with the Rice Diet became a close-knit community in exile around the central figure of Dr. Kempner. One, author Barbara Newborg, worked with him for 40 years, much of that time as his chief medical associate. This first-hand account of Kempner's life and of his work comprises two dramatic interrelated narratives. The story of a charismatic but always controversial personality and his circle of accomplished followers, and their wartime experience as refugees and exiles, will interest general readers, including thousands of "Ricers." For medical professionals and scholars, the book documents historic research that elucidated underlying principles of kidney, diabetic and cardiovascular disorders, and their successful treatment without drugs. The book includes many rare personal photographs (which Kempner suppressed during his life) and clinical images including graphs, x-rays, eye-grounds, and photos.
