Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Years of Peace Ever brief, of the relations between Great Britain and the United States since 1812 is to possess any value, it can only be through showing how, by slow steps, with many interruptions and much bitterness on both sides, we have nevertheless finally attained to the genuine friendship in which all sen sible men of both countries rejoice to-day. This fortunate condition has been reached only after many years of storm and stress, which it seems to posterity, always blessed with that unerring wisdom which comes after the event, might have been easily avoided. To understand the present situation aright, to comprehend the meaning and effects of the war of 1812 and Of the ninety eight years of peace which have followed its conclusion, it is necessary to begin with the separation of the two countries by the Treaty of Paris in 1782, when the connec tion between England and the United States ceased to be that of mother country and colonies and became the more distant rela tion which exists between two independent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Peace Treaties The present volume does not purport to be an exhaustive or scholarly study of the Peace Conference and the Treaties. It is not based on any inside knowledge of what went on at Paris, or on any unpublished documentary material. It is simply the outcome of my attempt, in connection with teaching contemporary history, to keep in touch with some of the principal developments in international affairs. Necessarily I must rely largely on newspaper and magazine material, which in many respects is unsatisfactory. The situation has been constantly changing while the book was being written, and many important questions are still unsettled. The principal Treaties, however, are completed and, except for the United States, are now effective. I hope that a preliminary study of them may be found useful for classes interested in present-day problems. I also hope that the book may prove of interest and value to anyone trying to obtain a clearer idea of what is going on in the world. Within the last six years the average American has been forcibly reminded of the connections between his affairs and those of the rest of the world. Success cause has been much beyond the means used, cc tively greater than in any kindred enterprise. F fully aware how much has already been gained. More than twenty years preceding the commencen our efforts, the wars of Christendom are supposed wasted more than and sacrificed than nine millions of lives; but its general peace h preserved since 1815 by the various agencies an ences which constitute the cause of peace. The sen of the civilized world on this subject are very now from what they were fifty years ago; and diff which would then have involved nations in conflic frequently been settled with scarce a thought of my each other's blood for the purpose. Leading cabinets become far more pacific than formerly; their services generously been tendered, in a variety of instances, to the threatened honors of war; and other expedients a resort to the sword for the adjustment of interna difficulties, are fast coming to form the established] of Christendom. Let this process continue fifty longer, and it will be well-nigh impossible to it civilized nations in war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peace Handbooks, Vol. 1 In the spring of 1917 the I Foriegn Office, in connection with the preparation which they were making for the work of the Peace Conference, established a special section whose duty it should be to provide the British Delegates to the Peace Conference with information in the most convenient form - geographical, economic, historical, social, religious and political respecting the different countries, districts, islands, c., with which they might have to deal. In addition, volumes were prepared on certain general subjects, mostly of an historical nature, concerning which it appeared that a special study would be useful. The historical information was compiled by trained writers on historical subjects, who (in most cases) gave their services without any remuneration. For the geographical sections valuable assistance was given by the Intelligence Division (Naval Staff) of the Admiralty; and for the economic sections, by the War Trade Intelligence Department, which had been established by the Foreign Office. Of the maps accompanying the series, some were prepared by the above-mentioned department of the Admiralty, but the bulk of them were the work of the Geographical Section of the General Staff (Military Intelligence Division) of the War Office. Now that the Conference has nearly completed its task, the Foreign Office, in response to numerous enquiries and Scquests, has decided to issue the books for public use, Relieving that they will be useful to students of history, politics, economics and foreign affairs, to publicists generally and to business men and traveller's. It is hardly necessary -lo say that some of the subjects dealt with in the series have lot in fact come under discussion at the Peace Conference; but, as the books treating of them contain valuable information, it has been. thought advisable to include them.
