Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1863 edition. Excerpt: ... ELEMENTS AND JURISDICTIONS OF THE ROMANCE LANGUAGES. I. Latin Elements. Our attention is claimed by six Romance languages on account of either their grammatical peculiarities, or their literary importance; two towards the east, the Italian and the Walachian; two towards the southwest, the Spanish and the Portuguese; and two towards the northwest, the Provencal and the French. The principal and most conspicuous source of all these languages is [Latin.'! They were derived however, as it has already been often and legitimately maintained, not from the classical Latin of literature, but from a popular Roman language which had been used by the side of the classical. Some care has been taken to prove, from the testimonies of the ancients themselves, that a popular language of this kind was actually in existence; but the fact is so far from needing demonstration, that we should much rather have been entitled to demand evidences for a contrary hypothesis, which alone would have involved an exception to general laws. We must only be cautious not to take this form of speech for anything else than it is usually conceived to have been, that is to say, for a vulgar usage of the common language, recognisable by a comparatively slovenly pronunciation of words, by a tendency to the elimination of grammatical forms, by the use of numerous expressions which are avoided in literature, and by sundry peculiar idioms and constructions. Such conclusions, and no others, are we justified in drawing from the evidences and testimonies which we find in the writings of the ancients; or at the very utmost it may be conceded, that the antagonism between the popular and the literary language had reached an unusually high pitch at that period when the latter sank into a...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the reconstructed morphology of Proto-Romance. It is the third in a series by this author. The first volume (1974, Elsevier) deals with the external history of the Romance languages: the conditions under which they developed, were used, and (in some instances) went out of use. The second volume (1976, Elsevier) treats the phonology of their common source, Proto-Romance. Together these three volumes aim to cast light, not only on Popular Latin speech by means of its surviving elements in the Romance languages, but also on the extent to which the comparative method can be regarded as valid and useful in instances where no attestations are available for a language as closely related to the reconstructed proto-language as high Classical Latin was to Proto-Romance.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Grammar of the English Language The grammar of our language has received too little atten tion from men engaged in literary pursuits. Those who have written on the subject, with the exception of Tooke and Webster, have paid too much regard to ancient, and too little to cotemporary and cognate languages - and too little also to the language itself as it is spoken and written. It is not a subject unworthy the attention of men who have attained an elevated rank as scholars. It has, on the contrary, high claims upon those who feel an attachment to elegant litera ture, and a solicitude for the improvement of the medium by which so much pleasure and instruction [8 imparted. -the learned of France and Italy, by. The attention which they have devoted to this branch of literature, have acquired for their respective languages a high reputation; would our own scholars but consider the subject worthy thelr attention, they might easily vindicate the claim of the English to an equality at least with either. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grammar of the Latin Language The Latin language is so rich and happy in its organization, and has been so consistently developed by the energetic spirit of the Roman people as well as by the exquisite tact of the Roman authors, that a continued study of it is amply re warded. It is now upwards of thirty years that I have been before the public as a writer on Latin grammar*; my varied studies have always led me back to this subject, and I may truly declare, that during each fresh revision of my grammar, when I was engaged in incorporating with my system the observations I had made in the meantime, and in considering the doubts and objections which had been raised in my mind, I have become more and more convinced of the inexhaustible mine of human wisdom whichpresents itself in the language of a happily organized nation like the Romans. I am not speaking here of the accidental matter contained in a grammar, nor of the accumulation of similar passages, - it will afford far greater pleasure to the pupil to discover for himself in the authors whose works he is reading passages which confirm or illustrate the rules he has learned, - nor of niceties of expression, for these are curiosities rather than any thing else, but I mean real philological discoveries and peculiarities, which arise from the organic structure of the language, derive their explanation from it, and in return throw light upon the whole fabric of the lan guage itself; and the result of all this is, that the general principles are better ascertained and established. It is owing to these continued studies that even the present translation of the ninth edition of. My Latin grammar has been enriched by some not unimportant improvements, which I have communi cated in ms. To Dr. Schmitz, and it will henceforth be our united endeavour to remedy every deficiency that may yet be found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Latin and English Grammar: Designed to Facilitate the Study of Both Languages, by Connecting Them Together As language is regular in its general structure, rules must no doubt be useful to assist us in understanding it. We first learn to speak from imitation. We use the expressions which we hear from others. But when we have once gained a cer tain stock of words, we employ them according to general rules. When a child, for instance, has occasion to speak of two persons, he will say, two mans, instead of two men because he learns the general method of forming the plural, before he attends to particular exceptions. The same may be observed of a person who endeavours to acquire any foreign language. Memory furnishes us with proper terms to ex press our thoughts, but judgment must be exerted in adapt mg these to particular circumstances.
