Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Calculus In the following pages an attempt has been made to present the elements of the Calculus in a way that will appeal to comparatively immature students. The reasoning is based essentially on the graphical representation of a function, and it is hoped that students who have obtained a firm grasp of the meaning of such representation will be able to gain, without serious difficulty, a right apprehension of the meaning of a differential coefficient. I have deliberately abstained from crowding the book with diagrams, because I assume that before the student begins the study of the Calculus he will be quite familiar with the methods of graphing the ordinary functions and will have reached the stage at which he can at once form a mental picture of such graphs. From the educational point of view the graph is not so much an end in itself as an aid to the comprehension of the variation of a function. In all practical applications of the Calculus the consideration of a differential coefficient as the measure of a rate of variation is of the utmost importance, and this aspect of a differential coefficient can be very readily understood by any one who is familiar with graphical work. The only satisfactory way, however, by which the conception of a rate can be adapted to practical uses is, in my judgment, the method of limits; I have therefore used that method throughout the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Differential Calculus A Constant is a quantity that has, or is supposed to have, a definite fixed value. A Variable is a quantity that is, or is supposed to be, continually changing in value. In general, constants are represented by the first letters of the alphabet, and variables by the last; but they should not, therefore, be confused with the known and unknown quantities of Algebra, which, in general, are constants. By the arrangement adopted, the student is early led by easy steps into Simple prao tical applications of the calculus; and the more difficult topics are postponed until late in the course. The theory of limits has been used exclusively in the develop ment of fundamental principles. Throughout the book much emphasis is placed upon the applications of the calculus to prao tical problems. Only such knowledge of physics on the part of the student is assumed as is usually included in an elementary course in that subject. Some problems are introduced that Show the use of calculus in discussing well-known applications to physical and engineering phenomena. Such problems are so stated, however, as to require no technical knowledge on the part of the student. The applications to geometry are such as are essential and usually to be found in a first course in calculus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Calculus The first three chapters form an introductory course in which the fundamental ideas of the calculus are introduced, including derivative, differential, and the definite integral, but the formal work is restricted to that involving only the poly nomial. These chapters alone are well fitted for a short course of about a term. The definition of the derivative is obtained through the concept of speed, using familiar illustrations, and the idea of a derivative as measuring the rate of change of related quantities is emphasized. The slope of a curve is introduced later. This is designed to prevent the student from acquiring the notion that the derivative is fundamentally a geometric concept. For the same reason, problems from mechanics are prominent throughout the book. With Chapter IV a more formal development of the subject begins, and certain portions of analytic geometry are introduced as needed. These include, among other things, the straight line, the conic sections, the cycloid, and polar coordinates. The book contains a large number of well-graded exercises for the student. Drill exercises are placed at the end of most sec tions, and a miscellaneous set of exercises, for review or further work, is found at the end of each chapter except the first. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analytic Geometry and Calculus The increased use of mathematics in science and engineering courses makes it desirable for the student to become acquainted with both the differential and integral calculus as early as possible. When considered as an aid to the study of these allied subjects, the introduction of the calculus cannot well be deferred until a course in analytic geometry has been completed. Fortunately, we have ample experience which shows that there is pedagogical value in a proper combination of the two subjects.
