Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Physiological Psychology, Vol. 5 The psychology which I shall present to you is not that old psychology which sought to investigate psychical phenomena in a more or less speculative way. That psychology has long been abandoned by those whose method of thought is that of the natural sciences, and empirical psychology has justly taken its place. Physiological psychology constitutes a part of empirical psychology. Let us start from an antithesis which has long been traditional in philosophy, and to which psychology in particular owes its existence as an independent science. This is the antithesis of material phenomena and psychical phenomena. We Shall purposely avoid the terms mind and matter, since each introduces a new and at first purely hypothetical unit instead of the manifold data primarily furnished us. For the present also we shall not investigate whether the material and the psychical data are equally primary or not. It shall be reserved rather for the close of our researches to decide whether the material and the psychical are entirely independent of each other; or whether the former is a function of the latter as the Spiritualistic philosopher assumes; or finally whether the latter is merely a function of the former as the materialist conversely assumes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Physiological Psychology, Vol. 5 The present work originated in lectures on physiological psychology that I have delivered at this university for several years. The doctrines herein presented deviate essentially from Wundt's theory, now dominant in Germany, and conform closely to the English psychology of association. Only Munstcrberg in Germany has recently raised objections from the standpoint of physiological psychology to the doctrine of apperception, characteristic of the school of Wundt. By introducing an especial auxiliary function, the so-called apperception, for the explanation of certain psychical processes, Wundt evades, it is true, numerous difficulties in demonstration. Wherever a psychical process that is difficult to explain appears, it is ascribed to this apperception. At the same time, however, all psycho-physiological explanation is abandoned. This book is intended to show that such an "auxiliary function" is superfluous, and that all psychological phenomena can be explained without it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiological Psychology The scheme of the nervous system and its fitnctions that the writer has sketched is based upon a careful study of the best authorities; but it is only fair to warn the reader that great differences of opinion upon many fundamental principles still obtain among these authorities. It seemed better to adopt, and apply consistently, a workable scheme of the ele mentary nervous functions than to confuse the reader by frequent references to these differences of Opinion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Physiological: Psychology, a Text-Book of Mental Science IN the early part of 1887 I published the results of sev eral years of research, in a book entitled Elements of Physiological Psychology. The very gratifying reception almost immediately given to this work showed an extended and profound interest in the experimental and physiological study of mental phenomena. The signs of this interest have continued unabated until the present time; and the book has been widely adopted, both in this country and abroad, for private reading and for the instruction of classes. Although the Elements, etc. Did not enter into the detailed history of discoveries and discussion of theories in the field of physiological psychology, it was necessarily somewhat voluminous and technical. For it aimed to give a summary of the entire field and thus to render accessible the data and conclusions to be found, separated, only in scores or hundreds Of larger and smaller monographs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physiological Psychology: A Treatise of the Activities and Nature of the Mind From the Physical and Experimental Point of View 2. Perhaps the most common definition of psychology, up to the present time, has regarded it as the science of the human soul. If this definition had always been given, on beginning the pursuit of the science, only in a provisional way, and with the implied or open confession that it is the business of psychology itself to de monstrate the existence of a particular entity called the soul, and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physiological Psychology: A Treatise of the Activities and Nature of the Mind From the Physical and Experimental Points of View (Thoroughly Revised and Re-Written) I am under particular obligations to Dr. James K. Thacher, Professor of Physiology in the Yale Medical School, for valuable assistance in that description of the Nervous Mechanism, its struct ure and functions, which the First Part of the book contains. If I have escaped the mistake of assuming to teach more than is really known upon this subject, it has been in large measure due to his friendly and skilful guidance. Valuable assistance has also been received from Russell H. Chittenden, Professor of Physiological Chemistry, and Charles S. Hastings, Professor Of Physics - both of the Sheffield Scientific School. The method and arrangement of the book have been chosen so as to fit it for use, both as a text-book by special students Of the subjects Of which it treats, and also by the general reader who is interested in knowing what results have been reached by the more modern - and even the latest - psycho-physical researches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology and Pathology of Mind There only two observations which it seems necessary to make by way of preface to this edition. The first is, that it has not been my conscious desire or aim throughout the work to discard entirely the psychological method of inquiry into mental phenomena, although the earnest advocacy of the physiological method has, naturally perhaps, led some readers to assume such a design. Hitherto, it must be remembered, the latter has hardly had any place, the former having been exclusively employed, in the study of mind. Now it is obviously impossible to set forth the fruitfulness and the rich promise of the physiological method, and to elevate it to its rightful position, without exposing the shortcomings and the barrenness of the psychological method, and degrading it to a lower rank than that which it has unjustly usurped. The second observation is, that this work may, by virtue of its plan and mode of execution, rightly claim to be judged, not in parts, but as a whole. Statements which in one place may appear too absolute, or entirely unwarranted, will have their justification, or the show of it, at any rate, in other parts of the book. It may not be amiss, then, to allege that an adequate criticism of the First Part cannot be made without some consideration of the Second Part; and that in like manner the study of the Second or Pathological Part cannot be undertaken to the best advantage without a previous study of the First or Physiological Part. This edition has been carefully revised, with the view of removing some inaccuracies, and contains additional matter, for the purpose of elucidating certain obscurities, which occurred in the first edition. An index has also been added for convenience of reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology, Vol. 4 of 5 Movement and Sensation are the two extremes of the processes of animal life by which the organism is brought into direct relation with the outer world. Movements are always objective in character and can be studied directly by external observation. Sensations are invariably subjective, and can only be directly analysed by introspection, and indirectly inferred from the expressional movements which are their external concomitants. It follows that the physiology of sensation in man is the necessary starting point for the comparative physiology of sensation in animals; and the intimate observation of our own consciousness is the only available basis for judging the psychical activities of animals or of other men. All organs of the body that are supplied with afferent nerves continually send information of their functional state to the central nervous system, and exert a reflex controlling influence along the efferent nerves without passing the threshold of consciousness. At other times they send to the centres messages which are not entirely subconscious, but emerge vaguely and indefinitely in consciousness as a more or less decided sense of well-being or the reverse. Or again, the messages from the different organs to the centres may definitely cross the threshold of consciousness and give rise to distinct sensations which differ in quality and intensity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Institute Course in Psychology, Vol. 5 The demand justifies this second edition. One of our leading educators says, It is al together too elementary. That certainly justifies it. A college student tells me that when he wants to find what the two-volume work used by the class is trying to say he turns to this to find out. That justifies it. A teacher writes, It aroused within me bet ter purposes and ambitions. Surely that justifies it. You have certainly given the teachers of Kansas a concise, complete and most valuable exposition of the principles of psychology applied to the teacher's work, ' writes an Institute Conductor. I have found it useful in my Institute work so feeling that the first edition has filled its purpose, I issue this one believing that it is not only adapted to teacher's Institutes, but to High School courses of study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychological Review, Vol. 5: Sociality and Sympathy, an Introduction to the Ethics of Sympathy Sympathy being in each and every instance a case of feeling, it tends inevitably to express itself. This expression is exhib ited primarily in the lines of the face and movements of the head and body. Such diffusion (bain) of feeling which is the phenomenon of emotional expression, exists to a greater or less extent in every sympathy. It is the one order of observable activity, ' by which we detect the presence of feeling, hence also the presence, under the conditions given, of sympathetic feeling.
