Book excerpt: The world of middle level education is rapidly evolving. Increasingly, online learning platforms are complementing or replacing traditional classroom settings. As students exchange classroom interaction for online collaboration, pencils for keyboards, face-to-face conversations for chat room texts, and traditional lessons for digital modules, it becomes apparent that teachers, schools, and administrators must identify ways to keep pace. We must identify ways to meet the needs of middle level learners within this digital context. In this volume, researchers and teachers share a variety of resources centered on the growing world of virtual education and its implications for the middle level learner, educator, and classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one would dream of teaching math as a helter-skelter of computational skills and concepts. Yet, this is what typically occurs in teaching science at the K-8 level. Look for a difference in the Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding series. Nebel constructs and organizes lessons so that scientific skills are developed and integrated in a systematic, logical way while still allowing flexibility to accommodate the individuality of children. Additionally: ?Çó Skills of inquiry and rational thought become habits of mind as each lesson draws students, hands-on, to examine, reflect, question, discuss, test, and reason their way toward rational conclusions. ?Çó Lessons become meaningful and retention is enhanced by constantly relating lessons to real-world experience. ?Çó Standards are achieved, not by teaching to the test, but by being natural outcomes of integrated learning. ?Çó Math, reading, writing, and other subjects are easily integrated. Lists of additional readings are provided with each lesson. ?Çó Special training for teachers is not required. Teachers will learn along with their students and be excellent role models in doing so. Costs are kept minimal by utilizing commonly available items and materials.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of the book is to expand the scope of revisionary studies of the thirties by analyzing novels using recent innovations in critical theory. The book adds to the research of Barbara Foley, Michael Denning, Alan Wald, and others who have challenged Cold-War-era accounts of the decade's socialist and communist culture. The book explores leftist literature from the thirties as balanced between two antithetical philosophical modalities: identity and ideology. Writers create identitarian fiction, he argues, as they attempt to appeal to a mainstream audience using familiar types and patterns culled from mass culture. They engage ideology, on the other hand, when they use narrative as a means of critiquing those same types and patterns using strategies of ideological critique similar to those of their European contemporary Georg Lukács.
