Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the English Classics The purpose of this book is to stimulate, in teachers and students alike, interest in the English Classics selected for use in schools, and to suggest various methods by which these masterpieces may be profitably studied. The book embodies the actual experience of teachers in the classroom, in that the analyses of most of the volumes studied and the accompanying questions have been prepared by men and women who have themselves edited one or more of the Classics and have actually taught them. The work of these collaborators has been brought into some uniformity of method, but Without injuring, it is hoped, the suggestiveness and variety and particular method of each contributor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to English Literature Fifteen years ago, Mr. Henry Holt asked me to arrange a series of representative selections from English literature in chronological order, and to connect them with such biographical and historical matter as might be found necessary for an understanding of them, and of their relation to national and literary history. The result of this request was a book, Representative English Literature, which appeared in 1892. In this book, owing to the large proportion of space taken up by selections, the historical sketch was necessarily very brief, and a few years later, at Mr. Holt's suggestion, I prepared a second book, An Introduction to English Literature, based on the first, in which the selections were omitted and the historical outline revised and considerably expanded. Two years later this second book enlarged by the addition of further biographical and other matter. In the present book the subject is treated with still greater fulness but upon the same general plan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to English Literature: Including a Number of Classic Works, With Notes This work is an attempt to solve the problem of teach ing English literature. The ordinary manuals, it is be lieved, have ceased to give general satisfaction. This result was inevitable; for the principle upon which they are based is fundamentally at variance with educational science. While containing a great deal about English literature, these works do not teach English literature itself; and it is not unusual for a student to finish them without being acquainted with a single classic work, or having acquired the least fondness for sterling literature. It is the recognition of these facts that has caused many teachers to desire and seek something better. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the History of the English Language The substance of the following chapters was delivered, in the form of County Council lectures, in London during the sessions 1907 - 9, and subsequently at the Summer School, St. Andrew's. It is hoped that the book will serve to introduce students of English to the somewhat neglected background of their studies. In the interest of these a certain amount of specialised material has been introduced, without, it is hoped, impairing the readableness of the book for the general public. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Historians With an Introduction Any attempt to illustrate the characteristics of English historians by a series of extracts can attain at best to a very limited success. Much more than any other volume in this series it must recall the classical wiseacre who carried round a brick as a sample of the house that he had for sale. At first it seemed to me impossible to devise any thing within the limits imposed which could be of service to serious students of literature; but, upon deliberation, it seemed that something might be done by a double and to some extent parallel series of extracts, the first illustrating the aims and motives of historians, mostly by their own utterances with regard to their craft; the second exhibiting their style and method of composition by passages of some length drawn from their most important works. I have convinced myself during the progress of the book that the study of the development of historiography offers a promising and little-worked field, from which valuable results might come both for philosophy and history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the English Historians A college course in English history must introduce the student to a number of great authorities on special periods and topics. It is not enough that these authorities should be casually read; they should be studied as carefully as a case - book in law, and then critically considered in the classroom. It is also necessary that all the students should do this Special reading at the time when the particular topic is reached in the text - book or lectures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Literature I must therefore ask the reader to remember that this book is planned as a guide and companion to his own study, and that, while I hope it may be interesting and suggestive in itself, the value of the things said in it must ultimately be sought in their application. It will be found that little place is given to questions of abstract aesthetics. These, as well as all details of a purely scholastic character, have been purposely avoided, as my desire throughout has been to make my volume literature is primarily a means of enjoyment and a help to life. I have to thank my friend, the Rev. Albert E. Sims, for the invaluable assistance which, as on various former occasions, he has again rendered me in my proof-reading and in the settlement of the many troublesome little points which are certain to arise when a book of this kind is passing through the press. Book Synopsis An Introduction to the Study of English Fiction (Classic Reprint) by : William Edward Simonds
Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of English Fiction (Classic Reprint) written by William Edward Simonds and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of English Fiction There was a time when by people with pretensions to a careful conscience the novel was regarded somewhat dubiously. That time, let us hope, is of the past. The existence of the novel as a work of fiction requires no vindication; no apology is needed for its pre - eminence in the popular taste of the day. Not only are we compelled to recognize the present supremacy of fiction, we have also come to the point of appreciating its utility and power. The development of English fiction, the evolution of the English novel, forms in itself an interesting story; and an acquaintance with that story is essential to an apprehension of the real qualities of our fiction and to an intelligent estimate of its originality and its merits. To tell this story in outline and to indicate the characteristics of successive epochs in its growth is the purpose of this volume. Th teacher may find it difficult to recognize the text-book in the preliminary chapters: he is reminded that these chapters form but the preface, and that his text-book begins with what comes after. With reference to the Selections, a word may be not amiss The translations from Beowulf and King Horn are rude enough, and it might have been wiser in the writer to utilize the labors of a more clever translator; he preferred, however, a version original albeit uncouth. Download or read book An Introduction to Poetry written by Raymond Macdonald Alden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Poetry: For Students of English Literature Chapter Four, on the fundamental problems of English rhythm, deals with the point of greatest difficulty in the whole range of the subject, and is to be regarded, not as making claim to originality, but as the most individual portion of this book. SO recently as the time of publication of the earlier volume, English Verse, it seemed impracticable to dogmatize on the elements of our metres, with any hope of doing more than adding another note to the discordant jangle of voices on that dangerous sub ject. But there is evidence that conditions have be! Come more hopeful; recent writers have seemed to tend more and more toward agreement on certain substantial principles and while one must still wait, no doubt, for a generally accredited science of English prosody, it is perhaps safeito offer for the use of students a rather more pretentious body of doctrine than would have been reasonable hereto.
