Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition of Introduction to Toxicology , toxicology has become a more mature science, the number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses has increased and thus the need for a regularly updated introductory text has become more pressing. This third edition caters for this need in a clear and easy-to-read style, featuring: * Up-to-the-minute information * Relevant toxicological examples that reinforce principles * End-of-chapter essay questions * New and redrawn illustrations * Glossary of terms * Extensively revised bibliography The fundamental principles of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion are described in the introductory chapters, as are the types of exposure and response. In subsequent chapters these are clarified with the use of carefully chosen examples. Among the topics considered are the potential adverse effects of drugs, pesticides, food additives and industrial chemicals.

Book excerpt: Introduction to Biochemical Toxicology Third Edition Over the past several decades, biochemical toxicology has contributed greatly to the advancement of scientific disciplines ranging from medicine and pharmacology to environmental science and industrial hygiene. In its never-ending quest to define the biochemical, cellular, and molecular events occurring when toxicants interact with organisms, biochemical toxicology provides the rational basis for, among other things, our understanding of acute and chronic toxic processes, the development of new therapies, the determination of toxic hazards, and the development of medical and agricultural biocides. Recent applications of new molecular and cellular techniques have greatly expanded our knowledge of how toxicants produce their adverse effects. As a consequence, the time has come for a substantial revision of Professor Ernest Hodgson's classic reference in the field. This Third Edition now contains updated overview chapters on immunochemical and molecular techniques. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research into the biochemical basis of toxicology has expanded rapidly over recent years, amidst concerns over the adverse effects of drugs, environmental pollution and occupational hazards. Following on from the acclaimed first two editions of Principles of Biochemical Toxicology, John Timbrell has expanded the text to include: summary sections questions and model answers thoroughly revised artwork These features, plus the new easy-to-read format will make biochemical toxicology more accessible to undergraduates and postgraduates coming across the subject for the first time, particularly when undertaking self-directed study. This comprehensive textbook provides a thorough explanation of dose-response relationships; disposition and metabolism; toxic responses to foreign compounds, and detailed examples to illustrate mechanisms of toxicity. There is also an expanded and updated bibliography, directing the reader to further reading if required. Students and lecturers will find the clear and concise approach, which established this book as the leading textbook in its field, an essential aid to learning and teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a readable introduction to modern toxicology with a particular focus on the mechanisms underlying the induction of toxicity by foreign substances. Since bioactivation is central to many toxic syndromes, special interest is devoted to chemicals that undergo conversion to toxic metabolites that induce toxic effects as diverse as cancer, birth defects and organ injury. The molecular consequences accompanying damage to cellular DNA and proteins is explored together with the relevance of toxicological paradigms to human diseases caused by alcohol and tobacco. The discipline of toxicology has developed rapidly since the thalidomide disaster in the 1960’s as scientists worldwide seek to understand the adverse health effects of human medicines, environmental pollutants, consumer chemicals and industrial reagents. An Introduction to Toxicology is intended to supplement the recommended reading list of undergraduate and graduate programs in toxicology and pharmacology as an enjoyable, accessible primer with illustrations that “unpack” the concepts being discussed in the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 14 in the series Comprehensive Toxicology extends and complements the previously published 13-volume set. This volume will be available separately. Toxicology is the study of the nature and actions of chemicals on biological systems. In more primitive times, it really was the study of poisons. However, in the early 1500s, it was apparent to Paracelsus that "the dose differentiates a poison and a remedy". Clearly, the two most important tenets of toxicology were established during that time. The level of exposure (dose) and the duration of exposure (time) will determine the degree and nature of a toxicological response. Since that time the discipline of toxicology has made major advances in identifying and characterizing toxicants. The growth of toxicology as a scientific discipline has been driven to a large extent by the use of extremely powerful molecular and cell biology techniques. The overall aim of this volume is to demonstrate how these advances are being used to elucidate causal pathways (or linkages) for potential adverse health consequences of human exposure to environmental chemicals or radiation. A unique feature of this volume is its illustration of how carefully-designed studies of the molecular mechanisms of chemical action provide not only understanding of the potential toxicity of the chemical under investigation, but also new insights into the functioning of the biological system used as an experimental model. Each chapter contains a listing of major peer-reviewed articles and reviews and useful web-sites. In addition, each chapter contains a broad introductory section that outlines the subsequent sections. These Introductory and Overview sections are designed to be stand alone chapters, and may be packaged as a textbook in graduate level courses.

Book excerpt: Toxicology is the study of the adverse effects of chemical, physical, or biological agents on people, animals, and the environment. Toxicologists are trained to investigate, interpret, and communicate the nature of those effects. Over the last ten years the subject of toxicology has changed dramatically, moving from a discipline which was once firmly wedded to traditional methods to one which is keen to embrace the innovative techniques emerging from the developing fields of cell culture and molecular biology. There is an acute need for this to be reflected in a paradigm shift which.

The title begins by discussing the historical aspects of drug discovery, with up to date knowledge on Nobel Laureates in pharmacology and their significant discoveries. It then examines the general pharmacological principles - pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, with in-depth information on drug transporters and interactions. In the remaining chapters, the book covers a definitive collection of topics containing essential information on the basic principles of pharmacology and how they are employed for the treatment of diseases. Readers will learn about special topics in pharmacology that are hard to find elsewhere, including issues related to environmental toxicology and the latest information on drug poisoning and treatment, analytical toxicology, toxicovigilance, and the use of molecular biology techniques in pharmacology. The book offers a valuable resource for researchers in the fields of pharmacology and toxicology, as well as students pursuing a degree in or with an interest in pharmacology.
