Book excerpt: This book summarizes what is known about mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) geographically and by major taxa. MCEs are characterized by light-dependent corals and associated communities typically found at depths ranging from 30-40 m. and extending to over 150 m. in tropical and subtropical ecosystems. They are populated with organisms typically associated with shallow coral reefs, such as macroalgae, corals, sponges, and fishes, as well as specialist species unique to mesophotic depths. During the past decade, there has been an increasing scientific and management interest in MCEs expressed by the exponential increase in the number of publications studying this unique environment. Despite their close proximity to well-studied shallow reefs, and the growing evidence of their importance, our scientific knowledge of MCEs is still in its early stages. The topics covered in the book include: regional variation in MCEs; similarities and differences between mesophotic and shallow reef taxa, biotic and abiotic conditions, biodiversity, ecology, geomorphology, and geology; potential connectivity between MCEs and shallow reefs; MCE disturbances, conservation, and management challenges; and new technologies, key research questions/knowledge gaps, priorities, and future directions in MCE research.

Book excerpt: Urbanization has reached unprecedented levels in the estuarine and coastal zone, particularly in the Asia Pacific region where mega-cities and mega-harbours are still growing. This book demonstrates the different solutions and pitfalls, successes and failures in a large number of ports and harbours in the Asia Pacific Region, and shows how science can provide ecologically sustainable solutions that apply wherever the growth of mega-harbours occurs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Samoa is a group of islands located in the South Pacific, lying roughly 2,600 miles southwest of Hawaii. It is an unincorporated territory of the United States, meaning that it is under American sovereignty but is not part of the 50 states. American Samoa consists of five volcanic islands and two coral atolls that cover an area of approximately 76 square miles. The islands have a tropical climate and are largely covered in lush rainforest with a diverse range of flora and fauna. American Samoa is home to a diverse culture that has been shaped by its unique history and geographical location. The islands were originally settled by Polynesian explorers, who brought with them their traditions, religion, and language. In 1899, the United States annexed the islands, and American Samoans became US nationals. Today, the islands are governed by an elected governor and legislature, and the people of American Samoa have a unique cultural identity that reflects their rich history and their position between Polynesia and the United States.

Book excerpt: This report presents the GIWA assessment of the Pacific Islands region, which comprises 23 island nations or territories that exhibit enormous geomorphological, climatic, cultural and demographic diversity within a vast oceanic expanse. The region is unique because its inhabitants, who have close links with, and great cultural, economic and spiritual dependence on, their terrestrial and marine environment, are often the owners and users of these resources and ultimately govern their conservation and sustainable use. In addition to highlighting the overexploitation of fish and other living resources in densely populated areas, this report emphasises the vulnerability of many of these small island states to the impacts of climate change, particularly sea level rise and fluctuations in rainfall, which has enormous influence on the availability of freshwater in the region. The root causes of overexploitation and freshwater shortage are illustrated using several case studies and potential policy options to mitigate these problems in the future are discussed.
