Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intramural Interments in Populous Cities, and Their Influence Upon Health and Epidemics Mankind have concurred by common consent in the propriety and decency of interments, as well as its suit ableness for the general health and comfort f the liv ing. It is an act prompted by humanity, and consid ered a natural tribute of respect from the living to the dead; a custom which has been continually observed with religious ceremonies, by enemies in time of war, and rarely denied in any country, except to those who have violated the laws of God and man. The burial of the dead has always been considered a religious duty, and instances of its discharge constantly occur in both Scripture and profane history. Jeremiah threatens it as the greatest punishment, that the wicked should be deprived of burial and left on a dunghill; or, as it is more emphatically expressed, left to the burial of an ass. The example of Tobit, who went about burying the dead bodies of his countrymen at the hazard of his own life, proves that good men consid ered it a part of their religious duties to bury the dead. Egypt, Greece, and Rome, always paid much respect to the dead, and regarded it as an object of the highest importance. From the writers of antiquity, we learn the practice of heathen nations, and the researches of the antiquaries of our own generation prove that both on the Eastern continent, and on our own, the high raised tumulus or mound continued to be a mark of respect among the living, and a signal honor to the dead, in every age of which we have any record. Book Synopsis Death at the Edges of Empire by : Shannon Bontrager
Download or read book Death at the Edges of Empire written by Shannon Bontrager and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-02 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hundreds of thousands of individuals perished in the epic conflict of the American Civil War. As battles raged and the specter of death and dying hung over the divided nation, the living worked not only to bury their dead but also to commemorate them. President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address perhaps best voiced the public yearning to memorialize the war dead. His address marked the beginning of a new tradition of commemorating American soldiers and also signaled a transformation in the relationship between the government and the citizenry through an embedded promise and obligation for the living to remember the dead. In Death at the Edges of Empire Shannon Bontrager examines the culture of death, burial, and commemoration of American war dead. By focusing on the Civil War, the Spanish-Cuban-American War, the Philippine-American War, and World War I, Bontrager produces a history of collective memories of war expressed through American cultural traditions emerging within broader transatlantic and transpacific networks. Examining the pragmatic collaborations between middle-class Americans and government officials negotiating the contradictory terrain of empire and nation, Death at the Edges of Empire shows how Americans imposed modern order on the inevitability of death as well as how they used the war dead to reimagine political identities and opportunities into imperial ambitions.
