Book excerpt: Analyses of cores, debitage and tools from the site are integrated to model how core reduction strategies evolved over time in response to changes in tool selectivity. Evidence from Tor Sadaf is also compared with that from other contemporaneous sites, in order to place the site in the larger context of the Late Pleistocene Levant. It is argued that the emergence of the Levantine Upper Paleolithic involved an autochthonous evolution from the Levantine Mousterian. This evolutionary change is probably related to changing mobility and subsistence strategies that occurred in the vicinity of ca. 40 thousand years ago. The analysis is also used to suggest new criteria for distinguishing between transitional and Early Upper Paleolithic assemblages.

Book excerpt: Recent archaeological excavations in the Wadi al-Hasa region of South-Central Jordan have produced a large number of stone tools and flaking debris, along with highly intact animal bones. Two sites in particular have produced very large faunal assemblages: Ain al-Buhayra (WHS 618) and Thalab al-Buhayra (EHLPP2). Attributed to the Upper Paleolithic Ahmarian culture phase, the sites date roughly between 25,000 to 20,000 BP (before present). Until now, most settlement studies of archaeologically-defined cultures in the desert interior of the Levant have been based almost exclusively on lithic analyses due to the absence of conditions suitable to preserve large quantities of bone. This thesis is, however, based entirely upon the bone recovered from these two sites during the 1997, 1998, and 2000 excavation seasons. Detailed quantitative analyses and osteological diagnoses were conducted to reveal the distribution of individual skeletal elements within the assemblages, which in turn have strong implications for estimating site function. Geological and geomorphological analyses are also included in order to establish the physical parameters of the site and to gauge the relative level of site preservation vs. destructive geomorphic processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Pleistocene (c. 75-15 ka) is a key period for the prehistory of the Nile Valley. The climatic fluctuations documented during this period have led human populations from the Middle and Late Palaeolithic to adapt to a changing Nile. In particular, the global shift to more arid conditions regionally translated into the expansion of the Sahara, the lowering of sea levels and the desiccation of some major eastern African lakes. These climatically-induced environmental changes influenced the behaviour of the Nile —although how exactly is still debated— and its role as an ecological refugium for human populations living in its vicinity. Genetic and fossil evidence highlight a strong population substructure in Africa during this period, suggesting the alternation of phases of major dispersals of modern humans within the continent, as well as out-of and back-into Africa, with phases of relative isolation of populations, which might be linked to the creation of environmental refugia during the climatic fluctuations of this period. Understanding to what extent the technological variability observed in north-eastern Africa between 75,000 and 15,000 years ago is linked to environmental changes and/or possible contacts between different human populations is critical in this context. The best-preserved evidence for past human behavior are archaeological assemblages, most often lithic assemblages. However, the use of different terminologies, whether they refer to cultural or techno-typological entities, hampers any systematic comparison between the Nile Valley on one hand and neighbouring regions on the other hand. An outcome of this practice is the artificial ‘isolation’ of the north-eastern African record from its neighbouring regions. This monograph groups together chapters presenting updated reviews and new data on regional archaeological, palaeoenvironmental, palaeoanthropological and geological records from north-eastern Africa, North Africa, the Levant and eastern Africa for the period ranging from 75,000 to 15,000 years ago. While north-eastern Africa, and the Nile Valley in particular, is generally considered as one of the main possible routes of migrations out of Africa, few recent studies allow the data from this region to be viewed from a macro-regional perspective. This book allows the exploration of topical issues, such as modern humans’ capacity for adaptation, particularly in the context of climate change, as well as population interactions and human dispersals in the past, taking a multidisciplinary approach.

The 29 multidisciplinary essays contained in this book provide a detailed picture of the population of the Farafra Oasis, hitherto one of the least well known within the Western Desert. Farafra became particularly important during the middle Holocene, the period when climate conditions were most favourable, with later brief humid episodes even in the historic periods. The results of the long-term research cycle presented here, combined with data from the survey of the whole Wadi el Obeiyid still in progress, allow the authors to identify changes in the peopling of the oasis and to define various occupation phases. The new chronology for the Wadi el Obeiyid is one of the main achievements of the book and, as demonstrated in the final chapter, is in complete agreement with the main cultural units of other territories in the Western Desert. On this chronological basis, the contacts between the latter and the populations established on the Nile are brought into sharper focus. The importance of the archaeological documents discovered at Farafra and, at the same time their fragility due to the deterioration of the physical environment and the uncontrolled human activities, make us fear for their conservation. We hope that this book, with its complete documentation of the precious nature of the Farafra Oasis landscape and its archaeological heritage, may help to promote more effective policies for its safeguard.
