Book excerpt: This thought-provoking novel, involving a prominent family aboard the most famous passenger liner in history, has a unique story line of intense drama. Detailing atrocious horrors that demand rescue, the story is told exclusively in first person directly involving the main female character, Sofia Anne Rothman. She is a very wealthy socialite who appears to have everything a woman could possibly desire. True reality reflects a young soul gruesomely victimized since the tender age of five. Her family demands complete loyalty from their youngest member, insisting she obey unquestionably her elder demented brother. Her new journey begins by sailing back home on the maiden voyage of Titanic. Her soul already bares a lifetime of endless unimaginable abuse that she tries in such desperation to suppress deep in her consciousness. Never has a tale entangled such complexities in such a raw realistic manner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at travel writing by British women from the seventeenth century on, Karen R. Lawrence asks an intriguing question: What happens when, instead of waiting patiently for Odysseus, Penelope voyages and records her journey—when the woman who is expected to waitsets forth herself and traces an itinerary of her own? Lawrence ranges widely, discussing both fiction and nonfiction and traversing the genres of travel letters, realistic and sentimental novels, ethnography, fantasy, and postmodern narrative. In examining works as dissimilar as Margaret Cavendish's rendition of the Renaissance adventure narrative and Christine Brooke-Rose's postmodernist Between, she explores not only the significance of gender for travel writing, but also the value of travel itself for testing the limits of women's social freedoms and restraints. Lawrence shows how writings by Frances Burney, Mary Wollstonecraft, Sarah Lee, Mary Kingsley, Virginia Woolf, and Brigid Brophy reconceive the meanings of femininity in relation to such apparent oppositions as travel/home, other/self, and foreign/domestic. Despite the differences-historical, generic, political-among these writers, Lawrence maintains, they share common insights. Their accounts overturn the dichotomy between adventure and domesticity, demonstrating something illusory within both the stability of home and the freedom of travel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eleventh Annual Conference on Virginia Woolf was the first to be held outside the United States. This voyage across the Atlantic was the stimulus for an exploration of themes of voyaging in Woolf’s works, from her interests in travel and cross-cultural encounters to her imaginative voyages between texts and genres . . . and the subsequent voyages her texts have made into the work of others. Published nine years after the conference, this selection of papers by international scholars fills a gap in the chronicles of the Woolf conference. For this reason, several papers feature an Afterword outlining developments in research since 2001, and the book also includes a “Bibliography of Publications Arising from the Conference,” facilitating access to research presented at Bangor but published elsewhere. Another special feature of the volume is the tribute to one of the keynote speakers, Julia Briggs, who died in 2007, in which Beth Rigel Daugherty communicates the gratitude of the scholarly community for Julia’s many contributions to Woolf studies. This welcome publication is a fitting record of our collective voyage as Woolf scholars.

Book excerpt: 'Virtual Voyages' is a fascinating account of the European discovery of the elusive 'great south land' told through the literature of 'imaginary voyages'. Written at the height of the era of European maritime exploration, these bizarre and captivating tales, with their wildly imaginative visions of antipodean inversion and strangeness, reveal a hidden history of attitudes to colonization. By exposing the relationship between myth and reality in the antipodes, this book casts new light on the power of fiction to influence history. In the post-colonial studies field, books about travel writing and empire have tended to focus on the high period of nineteenth-century imperialism and on the colonial settings of Africa and India. This book offers a fresh perspective by focussing on the eighteenth century, and referring to the geographical region of Australia and the Pacific, which has had far less attention. The book also breaks new ground by being the first to approach the genre of the imaginary voyage from a post-colonial perspective. In addition to the new insights into European colonialism that it offers, the book illustrates many broader themes in eighteenth-century history and thought. These include connections between the rise of science and modern imperialism, the development of narrative history and fiction and the influence of romanticism, the evolution of the early novel in Britain and France, and the role of mythology in the development of national identity.
