Book excerpt: This book contributes to the fundamental understanding of the physical mechanisms that take place in pseudo turbulent particulate flows. In the present work we have considered the sedimentation of large numbers of spherical rigid particles in an initially quiescent flow field. We have performed direct numerical simulations employing an immersed boundary method for the representation of the fluid-solid interface. The results evidence that depending on the particle settling regime (i.e. Galileo number and particle-to-fluid density ratio) the particles may exhibit strong inhomogeneous spatial distribution. It is found that the particles are preferentially located in regions with downward fluid motion. The particles inside clusters experience larger settling velocities than the average. The flow in all flow cases is observed to exhibit characteristic features of pseudo-turbulence. The particle-induced flow field is further found to be highly anisotropic with dominant vertical components. The results indicate that, in the present flow configurations, the collective and mobility effects play significant role for the particle and fluid motion.

Book excerpt: Particle-laden turbulence is important to a diverse range of topics: from aerosol transport in the atmosphere to flocculation techniques treating our drinking water. Often the particles in flows of interest are large and non-spherical, making them difficult to study, and so simplified cases are considered to quantify turbulent behaviors. Experimental laboratory research has provided insight into the quantifiable behavior of these simplified particle-laden flows, notably in cases of homogeneous and isotropic (H.I) turbulence. For this research, we designed and constructed a novel laboratory turbulence tank for the study of particle-laden flows that could create a region of H.I turbulence at its center. To do so, we incorporated random, symmetric forcing on a completely new geometry (a modified icosahedron) intending to maintain the properties of H.I. turbulence while increasing the size of the region of the tank in which it is contained. This facility will provide a unique testbed for studies of particle-laden turbulence.

Book excerpt: The motivation for the present work is to investigate particle-laden turbulent flows using accurate numerical simulations. In the present work, the carrier phase is modeled using direct numerical simulations (DNS) and the particles are tracked in a Lagrangian sense. Investigations of both one-way and two-way coupled particulate flows in homogeneous isotropic turbulence have been carried out. The phenomenon of interest in one-way coupled simulations is preferential accumulation, which refers to the tendency of heavy particles in isotropic turbulence to collect in regions of high strain and low vorticity. Several measures and mechanisms of accumulation have been reported in the literature often showing conflicting scaling with particle and fluid parameters. In the present study, accumulation has been quantified using several indicators to give a unified picture. The present work addresses the scaling of preferential accumulation with Reynolds number and suggests that while the spacing between particle clusters does exhibit a dependence on Reynolds number, the structure of particle clusters as viewed by individual particles shows little dependence on Reynolds number. The effect of adding a gravitational settling force on the particles has also been explored. While the gravity force tends to homogenize the particle distribution at low Stokes numbers, at high Stokes numbers it tends to arrange the originally random distribution into streaks in the direction of gravity. The ability of the Lorentz force to limit preferential accumulation has been the focus of the next part of the study. Charges are placed on particles to produce an electric field when the particles are inhomogeneously distributed. The electric field and thereby the Lorentz force tend to homogenize the particle distribution. It is interesting to note that the particle distribution attains a stationary state determined by the total amount of charge contained in the domain. It is demonstrated that in the presence of gravity, less amount of charge is required to homogenise particle distribution. Good agreement is observed for simulations of settling charged particles with experimental work. The modification of carrier phase turbulence by particles is studied formono-sized particles. The first studies inhomogeneous turbulence with (even symmetric) non-Gaussian velocity probability density functions, created by partitioning an active grid in a wind tunnel. The turbulence is like that encountered in the environment (e.g., by wind turbines) or produced by fractal grids. The statistics of the turbulence are shown in particular to depend simply upon the spatial derivatives of the velocity r.m.s. field. The second study characterizes the intermittent nature of an inertial particle mixing layer, where a particle-laden flow entrains a particle-free flow. This is the case at the boundary of a cloud and affects its growth and hence climate modelling. The flow is accomplished with water droplets in a wind tunnel downstream of a splitter plate; the experiments are done for both homogeneous turbulence and where the active grid is partitioned to create an inhomogeneous interface like in the first study. We show the droplets to be entrained in intermittent, large-scale bursts, preserving the properties of the air and turbulence ambient to them, which in a cloud are critical to droplet growth. Gravitational settling effects are isolated by rotation of the apparatus. The third and final study takes a more fundamental look at inertial particles in isotropic conditions using both numerical simulations and water droplets in air turbulence from 32 loudspeaker jets aimed at a central point. Turbulent settling speeds, velocity variance and variance anisotropy are measured over an unprecedented parameter range, identifying all relevant parameterizations of particle inertia and buoyancy affecting their response to turbulence, with applications to all particle-carrying flows. The three mechanisms by which turbulence modifies settling speeds (as compared to in quiescent flow) are isolated for the first time, with vertical turbulent motions shown to be responsible for settling reductions and horizontal ones to be for enhancements. The three experiments rely on hot-wire anemometry, phase Doppler particle analysis (PDPA) and high-speed camera Lagrangian particle tracking techniques. The body of the text consists of three stand-alone papers. The dissertation work provides fundamental understanding for wide-ranging environmental and industrial engineering problems.
