Il libro tratta di una materia difficile e in continua evoluzione, in modo facile, con una metodologia e soluzioni del tutto generali, non vincolate in modo indissolubile alle vigenti disposizioni di legge. Un manuale ricco di esempi di calcolo, di particolari costruttivi e schemi grafici di progetti effettivamente realizzati; ma c’è anche spazio per la teoria, esposta in maniera semplice ed essenziale, con approfondimenti dedicati a temi molto specialistici. Questa ottava edizione è stata riveduta, aggiornata, ed ampliata per ciò che concerne gli indicatori di rischio sismico, gli interventi locali (aperture), il legno, l’acciaio nella muratura, l’analisi dinamica modale e lo studio della risposta simica di strutture a pianta raccolta (torri, campanili). E' stato anche inserito un nuovo capitolo riguardante le prove essenziali, non distruttive (martinetti, ecc.), ed ampliata la parte dei dettagli costruttivi realizzati. Particolare attenzione è rivolta al problema del recupero dell’esistente e dei beni tutelati. Il volume, in uso o consigliato per l’approfondimento generale o specifico, da diverse Università italiane, è dedicato a professionisti e studenti, e raccoglie l’esperienza maturata dall’autore in oltre trent’anni di attività nel campo dell’ingegneria antisismica. L’intervento di consolidamento delle fondazioni in edifici in muratura è, fra le fasi di restauro, quella più delicata: esso infatti richiede la conoscenza storica e geometrica dei materiali, dei dissesti fondali e la loro causa, del terreno fondale, del manufatto e delle condizioni al contorno. Il consolidamento delle fondazioni, se non accuratamente analizzato, può risultare rischioso con possibile compromissione delle strutture e del terreno; in alcuni casi, malgrado l’aumento della sicurezza, si rischia di adottare opere di rinforzo basate su considerazioni approssimative e superficiali, sovradimensionando i costi dell’intervento. Questo testo tratta i diversi modi di consolidamento fondale su edifici in muratura, secondo un percorso che porta il progettista ad intervenire facendo delle scelte adeguate. Il libro, oltre ai richiami tensionali sulla struttura e sulla capacità portante, tratta in maniera esplicita le varie forme di cedimenti fondali: verticale, orizzontale, per traslazione inclinata e per rotazione attorno a un asse; il testo si conclude con esempi applicativi su edifici esistenti e con i possibili interventi da effettuare.
