Book excerpt: The first Positive Youth Development title to focus on the role of sport, this book brings together high profile contributors from diverse disciplines to critically examine the ways in which sport can be and has been used to promote youth development. Young people are too frequently looked upon as problems waiting to be solved. From the perspective of Positive Youth Development (PYD), young people are understood to embody potential, awaiting development. Involvement with sport provides a developmental context that has been associated with PYD, but negative outcomes can also arise from sport participation and school PE. Sport itself does not lead to PYD; rather, it is the manner in which sport is structured and delivered to children that influences their development. Positive Youth Development Through Sport fills a void in the literature by bringing together experts from diverse disciplines to critically examine the ways in which sport can be and has been used to promote youth development.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Research in the area of Positive Youth Development through Sport has shown that, under the right circumstances, participation in sport can have a beneficial influence on the development of youth (Holt & Neely, 2011). Although much research has examined youth sport programs designed to foster positive development, comparatively little research has focused on understanding positive development in skill-focused youth sport settings. Using a methodological approach that draws from the ontological theories of Carnap (1950) and the epistemological theories of Habermas (1971), the purpose of the present study was to use an action research approach to gain insight into the nature of PYDS in a skill-focused youth sport context. Participants in the present study were stakeholders in a high level U16 boys soccer team in Western Massachusetts. Data were collected using a combination of Collaborative Ratings Scales, interviews, reflection worksheets, and researcher journaling throughout cycles of planning, action, and reflection as the youth sport stakeholders worked toward their goals. Analysis of the data corresponded to the technical, practical, and emancipatory domains of human interest (Habermas, 1971), with a focus on three questions: (a) Did stakeholders increase effectiveness and efficiency in their goal areas? (b) How did stakeholders describe their experiences working toward each goal area? (c) How did stakeholders describe restrictive conditions of their experience and did changes in meaning occur to allow them to move past these restrictions? Findings provided some evidence that stakeholders made progress towards their season goals, with comfort, relationships, leadership, and personality emerging as important themes of their experience in each of the four goal areas. Implications for PYDS and methodological implications of these findings are discussed.

Book excerpt: This book brings together examples and cases from across the world to discuss how sport has and can further contribute to the UN 2030 Sustainable Development agenda. It discusses the major steps that international bodies have taken so far and can further take in the progressive integration of sport for sustainable development. Contributors from 21 countries take up at least one of the 17 UNO Sport for Development and Peace goals, and present and analyse examples of national, regional or local policies using sport as a lever for sustainable development. From traditional games to major competitions, from gender equality to social development and developing governmental transparency, the chapters showcase diverse experiences and demonstrate that sport is today much more than just physical activity. This book is based on the network of the International Research Network in Sport Tourism (IRNIST) with the collaboration of Sport 4 Impact. It is the first step of a collaboration between universities and the world of associations working in partnership with organizations such as the UN or the European Union. The book is an important resource not just for students and researchers of sport science but for policy makers, bureaucrats and sport administrators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 40 million youth participate in organized sports, and playing some sort of sport as a youth has become an American tradition. Boys and girls have a wide array of choices and become engaged in sports for a variety of reasons. The focus of this volume is organized youth sports programs that occur during the out-of-school-time hours, in particular, programs that emphasize youth development outcomes. The articles review the benefits of participation in youth sports programs, including health in general, with attention focused on innovative and unique sports-based youth development programs that are cropping up across the country. Other themes are how to better integrate youth sports programs with more traditional afterschool programs and how to redefine competition in youth sports programs. Authors introduce the term "sports-based youth development programs" and provide examples of successful programs that use a particular sport to facilitate learning and life skill development. This volume also looks at several youth sports intermediary organizations focused on youth development and how these organizations are providing technical assistance, training, and financial support to youth sports programs around the country and the rest of the world. This is the 115th issue of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Youth Development.

It focuses on large and underrepresented cultural groups across six continents within a strengths-based conception of adolescence that considers all youth as having assets. The volume explores the ways in which developmental assets, when effectively harnessed, empower youth to transition into a productive and resourceful adulthood. The book focuses on PYD across vast geographical regions, including Europe, Asia, Africa, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, North America, and Latin America as well as on strengths and resources for optimal well-being. The handbook addresses the positive development of young people across various cultural contexts to advance research, policy, and practice and inform interventions that foster continued thriving and reduce the chances of compromised youth development. It presents theoretical perspectives and supporting empirical findings to promote a more comprehensive understanding of PYD from an integrated, multidisciplinary, and multinational perspective.

Book excerpt: Sport is a critical context for youth development (Riley & Anderson-Butcher, 2012; Weiss, 2008). Through engagement in sport-based positive youth development (PYD), vulnerable youth can experience relief from risk prevalent in their environment and develop assets to overcome adverse circumstances (Anderson-Butcher, Iachini, Riley, Wade-Mdivanian, Davis & Amorose, 2013; Petitpas, Cornelius, Van Raalte, & Jones, 2005). Organizational effectiveness of sport-based PYD programs is imperative due to the impact programs can have on youths' successful transition to adulthood. A sport-based PYD program is considered effective when exposure to an intentionally designed intervention, with theoretical justification, produces the desired program outcomes (Dusenbury, Brannigan, Falco, & Hansen, 2003; Law & Shek, 2011; Nation, Crusto, Wandersman, Kumpfer, Seybolt, Morrissey-Kane, & Davino, 2003). Research examining organizational effectiveness, within the context of sport-based PYD, can inform program planning, improve program practices, and enhance PYD. The purpose of the current study was to examine program dosage as a programmatic mechanism of PYD, to determine how program implementation and engagement influences youth development in the context of sport-based PYD.

Book excerpt: Research in the field of developmental psychology has highlighted the importance of structured activities in providing positive experiences and outcomes for youth. In particular, youth participation in organized sport has been linked to the development of physical, motor, and psychosocial skills. Although these outcomes have been discussed in the sport psychology literature, it is not clear how positive youth development may be facilitated through sport. An ecological approach was used to examine developmental processes, personal characteristics, contextual factors, and time elements that may be linked to youth sport participation and positive development. Study 1 used a quantitative methodology to examine the relationship between developmental asset possession and youth sport outcomes such as burnout and enjoyment. Of the eight asset categories examined, four emerged as significant predictors of burnout and/or enjoyment. Specifically, positive identity, support, and empowerment were linked to burnout and positive identity, empowerment, and social competencies were linked to enjoyment. Study 2 also utilized a quantitative methodology in order to investigate differences between a group of youth sport "specializers" and a group of youth sport "samplers". Outcomes including burnout, enjoyment, and developmental assets were compared as well as experiences in sport. The groups did not differ in developmental asset possession or in sources of enjoyment. However, "samplers" reported more experiences integrating sport, family, and community whereas "specializers" were more likely to have more experiences with diverse peer groups. The "specializers" also reported higher levels of burnout (i.e., exhaustion) relating to their sport participation. Study 3 examined the development of positive youth within a sport specialization context. Through the use of interviews with elite youth sport coaches and practice observations, four characteristics (i.e., appropriate training structure, opportunities for personal and social development, opportunities for physical and motor skill development, and the presence of supportive interactions) were developed outlining how elite sport settings can enable the development of positive youth. This line of research highlighted the key role of the sport experience in promoting positive youth development. If youth sport programs are delivered with an emphasis on skill development in conjunction with the growth of key assets and an appropriate contextual experience, young people have the potential to emerge as healthy, secure, and positive citizens who feel valued and invested within their homes and communities.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to describe and interpret the experiences and perspectives of participants in a community-based TPSR martial arts program designed to promote positive youth development among at-risk African American adolescents living in an urban environment. Case study methodology was use to do investigate and analyze the experiences and perspectives of participants, relative to the benefits of martial arts, relevance of martial arts on life, youth development, and skill acquisition. Participants were four male members of the YMCA Community Action Plan (Y-CAP) program. Data sources included observational field notes, case files, and interviews with Y-CAP staff, participants, and parents. The specific questions that guided the research was: What was the objective of the martial arts club; What knowledge did the participants gain from their martial arts experience; Did the martial arts club promote positive youth development among at-risk youth; and Did the martial arts club experience promote physical skill and technique development? Results brought into view four diverse cases that proved relevant and informative in capturing the experiences and perspectives of participants in the martial arts program.
