Download or read book Making It Big written by Andrea Ciani and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and social progress requires a diverse ecosystem of firms that play complementary roles. Making It Big: Why Developing Countries Need More Large Firms constitutes one of the most up-to-date assessments of how large firms are created in low- and middle-income countries and their role in development. It argues that large firms advance a range of development objectives in ways that other firms do not: large firms are more likely to innovate, export, and offer training and are more likely to adopt international standards of quality, among other contributions. Their particularities are closely associated with productivity advantages and translate into improved outcomes not only for their owners but also for their workers and for smaller enterprises in their value chains. The challenge for economic development, however, is that production does not reach economic scale in low- and middle-income countries. Why are large firms scarcer in developing countries? Drawing on a rare set of data from public and private sources, as well as proprietary data from the International Finance Corporation and case studies, this book shows that large firms are often born large—or with the attributes of largeness. In other words, what is distinct about them is often in place from day one of their operations. To fill the “missing top†? of the firm-size distribution with additional large firms, governments should support the creation of such firms by opening markets to greater competition. In low-income countries, this objective can be achieved through simple policy reorientation, such as breaking oligopolies, removing unnecessary restrictions to international trade and investment, and establishing strong rules to prevent the abuse of market power. Governments should also strive to ensure that private actors have the skills, technology, intelligence, infrastructure, and finance they need to create large ventures. Additionally, they should actively work to spread the benefits from production at scale across the largest possible number of market participants. This book seeks to bring frontier thinking and evidence on the role and origins of large firms to a wide range of readers, including academics, development practitioners and policy makers.
Book Synopsis SME Internationalization Strategies by : Noémie Dominguez
Download or read book SME Internationalization Strategies written by Noémie Dominguez and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationalization is a strategic issue for companies as it is today the central axis for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Market expansion and the growing importance of emerging markets offer new development opportunities for SMEs to use innovative strategies - such as head-deck strategies - to effectively penetrate these markets. This book focuses on understanding these new strategies. Why do SMEs use head-of-bridge strategies in order to internationalize? How do they deploy such strategies abroad? Based on the example of five manufacturing SMEs, which are at different stages of internationalization, this book highlights the main motivations, stages of deployment but also difficulties encountered in this direction. This book is a tool for assessing potential locations and provide managers with a new alternative in terms of internationalization, enabling rapid identification of key stakeholders, adapting their international development plan and anticipating potential pitfalls.
Book Synopsis The Process of Internationalization in Emerging SMEs and Emerging Economies by : Hamid Etemad
Download or read book The Process of Internationalization in Emerging SMEs and Emerging Economies written by Hamid Etemad and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the fourth volume in the McGill International Entrepreneurship Series, brings together 27 top scholars to explore the structural complexities, evolving relations and dynamic forces that are shaping a new system of multi-polar, multi-level international business relations. It examines entrepreneurial efforts and relations in different national and corporate cultures, each embedded in and also constrained by country-specific socio-economic structures and each vying for consumer attentions in competitive global markets. The new millennia has experienced much rapid change, much of it implicit, intangible and not covered by the headlines of the popular press. The bipolar business system of the 20th century that prioritized the relationship between firms and consumers of developed countries is giving way to an emerging multi-polar and multi-level international system that considers consumers and companies in developing economies as well. In this book, scholars from around the world analyze the nascent architecture and relations in this quickly evolving system. They explore the structural complexities, evolving relations, and dynamic forces that are shaping and re-shaping the new system and examine entrepreneurial efforts and relations that cement its structure. The chapters in this volume portray the operating conditions of firms across 14 emerging country environments and industries ranging from basic foods and information technology to complex business processes. Students and professors of international business, entrepreneurship, marketing and management studies will find this volume an indispensable addition to the literature.

Book Synopsis Managing in Developing Countries by : Betty Jane Punnett
Download or read book Managing in Developing Countries written by Betty Jane Punnett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers management theories and approaches specifically in the context of developing countries. In recent years, international business scholarship has increased its focus on the developing world, which represents 80 percent of the global population and has doubled its share of value-added trade in the past two decades. This text will help readers to manage successfully in this region by learning to assess, apply, and adapt established practices in developing countries. Punnett begins by identifying the characteristics of the developing world—Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, India, Latin America, and the Middle East—and the companies therein to help students understand how the reality of these countries influences business and management. By tracking a fictional product through the internationalization process, students will navigate the challenges of operating an international company from a developing country base, using a traditional model of management focused on planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling. They will also gain insight into ethical considerations likely to arise, such as differential treatment based on personal characteristics and age dispersion. Cases, discussion questions, personal stories, and end-of-chapter exercises will help readers to grapple with issues and test their learning. Complete with chapter objectives and "Lessons Learned" boxes to facilitate understanding, Managing in Developing Countries is an excellent supplement for international business or international management students with a special interest in the developing world.
Book Synopsis Operating in Emerging Markets by : Luciano Ciravegna
Download or read book Operating in Emerging Markets written by Luciano Ciravegna and published by Pearson Education. This book was released on 2013 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master a complete roadmap for emerging market business success and profitability! Emerging markets are generating unprecedented opportunities, but they are far more complex and risky than they may seem. Profiting in these markets entails retooling business models, products, and strategies to exploit these differences, instead of falling victim to them. Too many American, European and Japanese companies continue to operate with a "developed world" mentality that seeks to merely adapt existing products and strategies, while underestimating the unique challenges of managing a business in radically different contexts. Operating in Emerging Markets draws from real-life examples and today's most valuable research to offer a step-by-step blueprint for improving profitability in emerging markets. Pioneering researchers Dr. Luciano Ciravegna and Dr. Robert Fitzgerald walk you through understanding the true risks and challenges; identifying and investing the right resources; developing the right strategies, products, and processes; and learning from both the successes and failures that have come before you. An indispensable resource for all decision-makers in companies that are (or plan to) operating in emerging markets; and for all graduate business students who may do so in the future. "Publications devoted to rapidly transforming economies are on the rise, but the contribution is often marginal. This new book, Operating in Emerging Markets , authored by Luciano Ciravegna, Robert Fitzgerald, and Sumit Kundu, is an exception. It provides valuable insights into what makes these economies grow and prosper. Most importantly, it responds to the need for practical approaches to tapping emerging markets. Thus it should assist current and future managers in navigating these high-potential but high-risk countries." --S. Tamer Cavusgil, Callaway Professorial Chair and Executive Director, CIBER, J. Mack Robinson College of Business. Georgia State University
