This book was released on 2006 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Quality assurance has been a major issue in Higher Education discourse during the past decade. Evaluations, accreditations and assessments have almost become standard procedures within the framework of translation studies. This quest for quality has not only to integrate market needs and new market requirements, but also novel strategies in training - whereby training learners and trainers has to be given equal attention. Translation quality has become a key issue in the interlinguistic and intercultural communication market as well as in the translator education environment. It has to be looked upon as a multifaceted issue to which all major players have to contribute: institutes of higher education, labor market and individual translators. Within the framework of the CIUTI FORUM 2008, the speakers emphasized the different aspects of quality from the point of view of the trainer, the professional and the market. This volume tries to highlight all those quality issues from an international, interdisciplinary and multifaceted perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our current knowledge society, as exemplified in our universities, is booming. The socialization of knowledge production, along with the development of interand transdisciplinary research groupings within traditionally discipline-based teaching institutions is equally increasing, even to the extent, that new terminology is coined to better specify this cross-sector collaboration. One of these new concepts which have emerged within the framework of interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity is heterogenic cooperation. This concept describes the bringing together of knowledge from different sources and can be observed mainly when specialists are dependent on skills and knowledge which do not exist within the framework of their own scientific domain. The ultimate result of heterogenic cooperation will enlarge any cooperation by integrating partners from different domains, fostering collaboration in a common project with a homogeneous result. In a nutshell: the pathway from heterogeneity to homogeneity. The proceedings of the CIUTI FORUM 2012 highlight different types of networks leading not only to better practices and academic quality but also to new and innovative partnerships. Such as a solid integration of partners from industry and professional associations as well as from the language services of the United Nations, the European Parliament and the European Commission. This volume also strives to outpace in fine the status of Translation Studies as a hybrid discipline in order to be able to serve other scientific domains as a source of knowhow, skills and competences. This book contains contributions in English, French and German.

Book excerpt: It is widely recognised that optimum translation quality is often difficult to achieve owing to problems in the source text. For large-scale cross-cultural surveys source questionnaires need to be translated into multiple target languages in order to produce comparable data across participating countries and cultures. ‘Advance translations’ have been applied in such surveys to improve the translatability of source questionnaires. The author used a think-aloud study to test the usefulness of advance translation into French and German. The study involved experienced professional questionnaire translators and applied qualitative and quantitative analysis. The study confirmed the usefulness of advance translation, at least for the languages and source texts used.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Position of the German Language in the World focuses on the global position of German and the factors which work towards sustaining its use and utility for international communication. From the perspective of the global language constellation, the detailed data analysis of this substantial research project depicts German as an example of a second-rank language. The book also provides a model for analysis and description of international languages other than English. It offers a framework for strengthening the position of languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Spanish and others and for countering exaggerated claims about the global monopoly position of English. This comprehensive handbook of the state of the German language in the world was originally published in 2015 by Walter de Gruyter in German and has been critically acclaimed. Suitable for scholars and researchers of the German language, the handbook shows in detail how intricately and thoroughly German and other second-rank languages are tied up with a great number of societies and how these statistics support or weaken the languages’ functions and maintenance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) has grown considerably in the last decades, and a wide number of issues related to this field have been addressed through a variety of lenses. These range from the changes occurring in spoken English, to the much-debated notion of the native-speaker; from the threat that English represents for minority languages, to the metadiscourse(s) contributing to the myth of English as a language equally accessible to speakers of all nationalities. Adopting different perspectives and positions, the articles in this special issue of The Interpreter and Translator Trainer all demonstrate that ELF poses many challenges to the teaching of translation and that, while there are no simple and ready-made solutions, such challenges need to be taken on board to fill the current gap between translation pedagogy and translation practice. The volume is intended as a starting point to encourage educators to rethink their approach to translation pedagogy by envisaging tools and practices that can contribute to preparing students to become professional translators of ELF and reflective practitioners who are aware of the centrality of translation in the digital age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wang presents the status quo of curriculum development in professional interpreting programmes in China and points to the urgency to devise a curriculum improvement model to ensure the relevance of such programmes against a changing reality. She covers the European experience in interpreter education that China can learn from and discusses opportunities arising from previous examples for China to iterate upon in the context of the broader and more diverse professional reality. The book puts the nature of professional interpreters and, in turn, interpreting programmes, under the concurring lens of curriculum studies and the sociology of professions. Wang identifies eight stakeholders which call for changes in interpreting programmes, and six categories of competence (or sub-competence) which see a progression from undergraduate to graduate and lifelong-learning stage. These serve as curriculum goals and encapsulate the recommended changes in institutional curricula. The conceptualised model is then described with a case study on Chinese-English retour training to show its applicability and relevance in interpreting programmes on the ground. Offering insight for academics, practitioners and trainee interpreting students and of relevance to a broader interpreting community looking to set up or reform interpreting curricula, Wang’s book will help ensure curriculum improvement that is theoretically sound and practically viable.

In line with the conference topic “Centres and Peripheries”, the papers do not only deal with mainstream topics in translation studies, but with some research “peripheries” as well, such as advance translation or intralingual translation. All papers have in common that they relate translation research to aspects of comprehensibility addressing them from several different perspectives, such as source text defects, quality ensurance during text production, or evaluation of comprehensibility in the target text.
