Book Synopsis Educational Knowledge by : Thomas S. Popkewitz
Download or read book Educational Knowledge written by Thomas S. Popkewitz and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2000-01-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on comparative examination of educational reforms, this book explores the relation of state practices and educational knowledge to changes in culture and economics among nations. Countries with different state traditions and political regimes are studied to understand how national and global settings are interrelated in current restructuring of education and social welfare policies related to schooling. The regional cases focus on the policies of the European Union, restructuring efforts in Latin America, and family, child welfare, and early childhood policies in Eastern Europe. In addition, specific studies of national changes in Argentina, Great Britain, Germany, Russia, Tanzania, South Africa, and the U.S. are presented. Educational Knowledge makes a unique contribution by bringing neo-Marxist theories, world systems, and post-modern cultural and political theories into a conversation about the changes that are occurring in the educational arena. This book will interest not only specialists in the field of education studying educational reform, but also economists, political scientists, sociologists, and comparative historians who examine the functioning of education within the larger context of modernization. Contributors include Benita Blessing, Marianne Bloch, Alejandra Brgin, Gunilla Dahlberg, Peter Drewek, Ines Dussel, Tony Edwards, Sharon Gewirtz, Lisa Hennon, Steve Kerr, Johan Müller, Antonio Novoa, Thomas S. Popkewitz, Jurgen Schriewer, Gillermiona Tiramonti, Carlos Alberto Torres, Frances Vavrus, and Geoff Whitty.

Book Synopsis Biodiversität und Gesellschaft Biodiversity and Society : Gesellschaftliche Dimensionen von Schutz und Nutzung biologischer Vielfalt by : Friedrich, Jan
Download or read book Biodiversität und Gesellschaft Biodiversity and Society : Gesellschaftliche Dimensionen von Schutz und Nutzung biologischer Vielfalt written by Friedrich, Jan and published by Universitätsverlag Göttingen. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The conference “Biodiversity and Society” discussed topics of biodiversity research from the perspective of social sciences and humanities. The inclusion of these perspectives in the until now scientifically orientated biodiversity research is necessary for the definition of conservation goals and value standards, as well as for the development of instruments for the preservation and use of biodiversity. Since the instruments in particular are applied in complex social, economic and legal contexts, these societal conditions should be considered. This proceedings volume presents findings of multiple disciplines and thereby contributes to an integral and fruitful analysis of the human relation to and influence on biodiversity.
Download or read book Israelpolitik written by Lorena De Vita and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapprochement between Germany and Israel in the aftermath of the Holocaust is one of the most striking political developments of the twentieth century. German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently referred to it as a ‘miracle’. But how did this ‘miracle’ come about? In this book, Lorena De Vita traces the contradictions and dilemmas that shaped the making of German–Israeli relations at the outset of the global Cold War. Examining well known events like the Suez Crisis, the Eichmann Trial, and the Six-Day War, the book adopts a ‘pericentric’ perspective on the Cold War era, drawing attention to the actions and experiences of minor players within the confrontation and highlighting the consequences of their political calculations. Israelpolitik takes two of the most interesting dimensions of the Cold War – the German problem and the Middle East conflict – and weaves them together, providing a bipolar history of German-Israeli relations in the aftermath of the Holocaust. Drawing upon sources from both sides of the Iron Curtain and of the Arab–Israeli conflict, the book offers new insights not only into the early history of German–Israeli relations, but also into the dynamics of the Cold War competition between the two German states, as each attempted to strengthen its position in the Middle East and in the international arena while struggling with the legacy of the Nazi past.

Book Synopsis Studies in the Culture of Science in France and Britain Since the Enlightenment by : Maurice P. Crosland
Download or read book Studies in the Culture of Science in France and Britain Since the Enlightenment written by Maurice P. Crosland and published by Variorum Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide range of the author's previously published papers in the history of science is brought together in this book. The articles, which are mainly concerned with the 18th and 19th centuries, are arranged in three sections: science in the Enlightenment period; science in an institutional context; national and international science. Some of the papers present a broad perspective, others are of a more detailed nature, drawing on the archives of the Paris Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of London. An original interpretation of the career of Priestley is followed by a historiographical article on Lavoisier. Papers with a more social approach include subjects such as the professionalisation of science, peer review, and science and war. It is argued that science became a profession in France long before it did in Britain. France also created an important precedent in the academic world in demanding publications of research as credentials.
Book Synopsis Britain, Germany and the Cold War by : R. Gerald Hughes
Download or read book Britain, Germany and the Cold War written by R. Gerald Hughes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-06-11 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-researched book details the ambiguity in British policy towards Europe in the Cold War as it sought to pursue détente with the Soviet Union whilst upholding its commitments to its NATO allies. From the early 1950s, Britain pursued a dual policy of strengthening the West whilst seeking détente with the Soviet Union. British statesmen realized that only through compromise with Moscow over the German question could the elusive East-West be achieved. Against this, the West German hard line towards the East (endorsed by the United States) was seen by the British as perpetuating tension between the two blocs. This cast British policy onto an insoluble dilemma, as it was caught between its alliance obligations to the West German state and its search for compromise with the Soviet bloc. Charting Britain's attempts to reconcile this contradiction, this book argues that Britain successfully adapted to the new realities and made hitherto unknown contributions towards détente in the early 1960s, whilst drawing towards Western Europe and applying for membership of the EEC in 1961. Drawing on unpublished US and UK archives, Britain, Germany and the Cold War casts new light on the Cold War, the history of détente and the evolution of European integration. This book will appeal to students of Cold War history, British foreign policy, German politics, and international history.
