Book Synopsis Shiphandling Simulation by : National Research Council
Download or read book Shiphandling Simulation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-02-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of major shipping disasters on all coasts, the safety of vessel operations in U.S. ports and waterways and the effectiveness of waterway designs are under increased scrutiny. But are traditional waterway design practices that rely heavily on rules of thumb and conservatism providing adequate margins of safety while keeping the overall costs of waterway projects within the funding capabilities of local project sponsors? Shiphandling Simulation addresses how computer-based simulation can be used to improve the cost- effectiveness of waterway design while satisfying safety objectives. The book examines the role of computer simulation in improving waterway design, evaluates the adequacy of data input, explores the validity of hydrodynamic and mathematical models, assesses required and achievable accuracy of simulation results, and identifies research needed to establish shiphandling simulation as a standard design aid. Case studies of waterway design efforts employing shiphandling simulation are analyzed and lessons learned are identified.

Book Synopsis Business Object Design and Implementation III by : D. Patel
Download or read book Business Object Design and Implementation III written by D. Patel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NCITS Accredited Standards Committee H7 Object Information Management, now part of NCITS T3 Open Distributed Processing, and the Object Management Group BUsiness Object Domain Task Force (BODTF) jointly sponsored the Fifth Annual OOPSLA Workshop on Business Object Component Design and Implementation. The focus of the workshop was on design and implementation of business object component frameworks and architectures. Key aspects discussed included: • What is a comprehensive definition of a business object component'? • Are the four layers (user, workspace, enterprise, resource) presented at the OOPSLA'98 workshop the right way to layer a..bysiness object component. system? • How is a business object component implemented across these layers? What are the associated artefacts? Are there different object models representing the same business object component in different layers? • What are the dependencies between business object components? How can they be plug and play given these dependencies? How can they be flexible and adaptive? How do they participate in workflow systems? • How will the em~rgence of a web-based distributed object-computing infrastructure based on XML, influence business object component architectures? In particular, is the W3C WebBroker proposal appropriate for distributed business object component computing? The aim of the workshop was to: • Enhance the pattern literature on the specification, design, and implementation of interoperable, plug and play, distributed business object components.

Book Synopsis Recommender Systems for Information Providers by : Andreas W. Neumann
Download or read book Recommender Systems for Information Providers written by Andreas W. Neumann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-03 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information providers are a very promising application area of recommender systems due to the general problem of assessing the quality of information products prior to the purchase. Recommender systems automatically generate product recommendations: customers profit from a faster finding of relevant products, stores profit from rising sales. All aspects of recommender systems are covered: the economic background, mechanism design, a survey of systems in the Internet, statistical methods and algorithms, service oriented architectures, user interfaces, as well as experiences and data from real-world applications. Specific solutions for areas with strong privacy concerns, scalability issues for large collections of products, as well as algorithms to lessen the cold-start problem for a faster return on investment of recommender projects are addressed. This book describes all steps it takes to design, implement, and successfully operate a recommender system for a specific information platform.
